Hi, my name is Fabian Molina. I wrote a book on character animation. This book gives you a glimpse into my long, highly caffeinated nights, hovering over my animation desk with my headphones on, sometimes almost nude. Animation is a highly internal process and takes a huge amount of patience. As I work, I’m asking myself questions and making hundreds of split second decisions—some I’m aware of and some that are subconscious. What I will try to do is bring them out of me for you to learn from, dissect or even critique. So please, join me on this journey of revelation and insight as I show a side of myself that even some of my closest friends never get to see.
I have been working in the games industry and teaching college animation courses for about 3 years now. Over the course of these years and some more I have been searching the bookshelves for a book that explained the creative process with animation at the heart. I was never able to find such a book. What I found over the years were several "how to" books that get very technical about character animation. Aside from short articles or filmed lectures nothing really existed that fit what I was looking for. Frustration aside, I knew I had to write a book that fit what I was looking for and explained why I am who I am, why I animate, and why I make the decisions I do when animating.
Animating in the Nude is for everyone, not just animators. It is not a textbook but I hope that you will be able to learn a lot from it. It is a place where I explored my creative process, and what I look for in my work. Sometimes it can be easy to create something from nothing, but creating something with lasting value is one of the hardest things to do. As artists, designers, and creative minds, I know it is difficult to do, but by staying inspired by everything around us we can continue to create works of true value to the masses. With this book I explain my attempts of doing so with the art form of animation.
Fabian's knowledge and first hand experience's are as if you get a chance to see what the wizard behind the curtain was doing all along. This book provides the right kind of behind the scenes look and thinking that make it necessary to succeed at any level - be it beginner, student, hobbyist or weathered professional. It's a refreshing and personal look at what it takes to accomplish the illusion of life and the principles that are carved in stone from those that came before us."

Fabian Molina is a superb draftsman who has shown us his story driven character designs in his first release “Sketch or Die”. Now he gives his golden insight on character animation in “Animating in the Nude!” Rather than a “how to” book, we encompass a journey of personal experiences on the process of animation and provocative theories that will both intrigue and inspire people entering the world of animation. Fabian’s passion for animation and design is showcased in this book. A must have for the animator’s library.

The book is written! The book has been designed. The Book has been submitted for printing. It is currently in the hands of some great people that I trust will do a great job with the printing. As for the book itself, I want it to be easy to look at. I want you to look at it and be proud to hold it in your hands. I know it's hard for people to spend money on books these days, so I worked hard getting the design and layout right for you. I even added a few special treats for you to enjoy aside from the obvious content of the book. Can someone say...flip book! What fun is an animation book if you can't see the drawings come to life?
When it comes off of the press it will be a 9x9" hardcover book. Yup, a square. It will contain 124 pages of writing, drawings, and inspiration!
The ebook is a pdf file that contains all 124 pages of the book. It will be compatible with a pc, mac, ipad, and several other ereaders.
What is the money for? The money is mostly for production costs. I am still not sure what they are but I know it is well over what I am trying to raise here. I also hired an editor that has been an amazing help and a much needed investment. Other than that, the additional money will go to creating a better web edition of the book and future promotional material.
Thank you for taking a look!
