About

NOTE:  Anyone who donates at the  $ 100.00  level or above will also receive, at no additional cost, a FREE  copy of the first edition of the gothic horror novel "Beware Jerusalem".  Just my way of saying thanks, I appreciate your help.  READ ON!!

This strategy board game is taken directly from the series of H. P. Lovecraft's stories titled 'The Cthulhu Mythos '.  All action and characters will be taken from 'The Cthulhu Mythos', as will all locations.  (There may be some limited exceptions, which will be explained in the rules booklet that accompanies the game.)  The game will be set in the late nineteenth/early twentieth centuries to mimic the ambiance of Lovecraft's landscapes.

The object of the board game is to prevent the god Cthulhu from breaking into the earthly realm.  Part of how he does this is by collecting the souls of those he vanquishes (which are the other players) or by working in tandem with players to bring him into our realm.  But, depending on how you choose to play, this may not end of the game.  You can play to send him back to 'hell', so to speak, if you choose (see below). There will be a 3-D sundial, titled 'the Crypt of Lost Souls', that acts as a count down to the Cthulhu apocalypse and which will hold the souls that Cthulhu has suborned.  (There will be an avenue for some of these lost souls to be resurrected into the human plane;  on the other hand, some souls may be lost for the remainder of the game--that's why it's a good idea to play more than one character.)

The board game is based on current game theory. The game will have various starting points depending on which story is first chosen,  which is based on 'chance'.  In other words, different variations of the game will be taken from the various stories, yielding literally dozens of play variations.  Each different starting point will have certain drawbacks and penalties, as well as benefits imposed on it.  Each player will begin the game independently from all other players and will have their own collection of player cards.  The starting location as well as which character or characters you will play (multiple characters per player is optional and will be explained more fully in the game booklet) will be based on a throw of the specially designed rune-inscribed dice.  The game booklet will contain profiles of the player's character(s), a statement of what's expected of each player, and information and spells from the Necronomicon (and yes there is such a book).  Ultimately, one player will control the Necronomicon;  specific cards will be included that decode/translate the Necronomicon which will play a prominent position in allowing Cthulhu into the earthly plane.

The three-dimensional physical game board (including 3-D printing and high quality resin figures) itself, showing cross sections, birds-eye views of the locations for each story, and the interior of select buildings (of course, Arkham, and others) is rather unique and does not involve the common pattern of movement in sequence (ie. monopoly, etc.).   It's more on the order of  a tree with various branches with various maps of locales.  In size, the board is larger than a regulation board game and will be made of long-lasting, high quality cotton cloth for ease of storage. The boards themselves will contain original and professional artwork.  The regular game is designed for four to six players; there is no optimum number of players, except those agreed to by the players themselves. One player will take the role of Cthulhu [in addition to his/her other character(s)] and it is Cthulhu that the other players play against, but the identity of Cthulhu will remain a mystery. Players are allowed to battle Cthulhu individually or in combined forces. but the identity of Cthulhu will not be disclosed until the end of the game.  In addition, each game board will be different;  players may move between boards at any point as far as the rules allow.

Cthulhu will try to release other, lesser gods.  The more released the closer Cthulhu comes  to winning the game.  Any player, provided he inadvertently has the misfortune to have a release card, can aid in the release of a lesser god.  These, as will other action in the game, be controlled by the Necronomicon, as detailed in the game booklet.

As Cthulhu becomes more powerful he unleashes greater and greater evil on the world;  the evil will be of Cthulhu's making and he just needs to find a willing vessel(s) as determined by the player guide booklet.

As I was rereading Lovecraft I realized there was more material than necessary to create a truly exciting gaming experience.  My solution to this conundrum was to create a more advanced 'deluxe' edition to Cthulhu, which requires a more advanced knowledge of Lovecraft's stories and a better understanding of strategy, but can still be played based on an understanding of the game book enclosed with the game.   There are some  major differences.  1) Since there are more starting points even with more than one from any of Lovecraft's stories,  giving the deluxe edition, theoretically,  dozens more possibilities above those found in the regular edition.  2) the deluxe game board will be expanded to accommodate six to ten players, again with no number of players being optimum.  3) The regular edition will contain two interlocking game boards, which can be played singly or in combination, while the deluxe will contain four, and players can still move from board to board, depending on their position on the previous board and the rules.  4) With the deluxe edition two players may play Cthulhu and one of the lesser gods, one that can be chosen from a list of possible subordinates (again both will be remain secret).  5) To expand the possibilities  further, players can choose multiple characters to play (again, as set forth in the rules in game booklet):  a second or third (with the deluxe) characters without diluting the effect of the other characters.  6) The regular game will be user friendly with a basic knowledge of the Cthulhu Mythos;  the game can be enjoyed without any advanced understanding of Lovecraft's stories;  this basic understanding will be presented in the game and rule book accompanying the regular edition.  The deluxe will require a deeper knowledge of The Cthulhu Mythos stories and other Lovecraft stories, where appropriate, as well as a better understanding of strategy (which will probably be acquired by playing the game).  7) The deluxe edition allows players to play beyond Cthulhu's breaking through to the earthly plane without an end to the game;  the strategy then becomes limiting the damage Cthulhu can do and trying to send him back to his other plane.  This allows the game to continue over hours or even days,  and theoretical maybe even over an indeterminate amount of time. Finally, 8) when new additions are added to future games, those who subscribe to the deluxe game will automatically receive these additions to add to their game.  These will automatically be in new editions;  but anyone who subscribed initially will also receive them, so your game will never become antiquated.

NOTE:  The reason there is such a time lag for delivery of he regular and deluxe games is my intention to test market the games before they are delivered for general consumption.  I want to make sure this game is the best it can be, taking into consideration the test marketing I will do.  Hopefully the game(s) will be completed and tested in advance of the the  delivery date(s) specified.

I don't anticipate any problems completing this offering;  I haven't had any so far.  I've lined up suppliers for everything I've mentioned.  And it's only a question of assembling everything in a working order and parceling it out to gamers to test play.  I will choose five test players each from those that contribute at the regular and deluxe edition levels and will take into consideration their comments and suggestions.

I would like to generate enough money to bring the game to market.  So tell your friends and fellow gamers!!  And please be as supportive as your circumstances allow.

I will do my part in producing an intellectually stimulating, challenging, and inventive game.  Together, we can make this a success.

  Thank you very much.

Risks and challenges

I'm not expecting any unforeseen problems with completing this offering. I have already lined up suppliers and costs. Since there are multiple suppliers available for each component of the game, finding a substitute, should that become necessary, will create no problems in reaching the prospective shipping dates.

The reason there is such a lag-time between the end of this offering and when the games will be delivered is my desire to deliver a high quality item by allowing the game to be tested beforehand by players and then making any changes deemed necessary.

I would like to ship as many games as possible and then marketing the game online. The amount requested is the minimum to allow for some marketing; any additional moneys will be used for additional marketing. The more subscribers, the more money will be available for marketing.

Thank you.
Robert Ralph Smith
