Extra Teeth is a BRAND NEW bi-annual Scottish literature magazine featuring phenomenal fiction and non-fiction by writers from Scotland and beyond. With a passion for print and an international outlook, Extra Teeth will contain a mixture of bold short stories and illuminating essays. Each issue will feature a different guest illustrator to respond to the work and flex their creative wings.
Extra Teeth will be a space for authors to be strange and experimental, and for essayists to explore the unusual subjects they’re passionate about.
We’re committed to fair pay, active diversity and transparency, and to that end, we need to raise £10,000 to produce the first two issues of the magazine and establish a business model that will ensure longevity. If we surpass this goal we'll have the opportunity to achieve even more!
Our aim is to surprise and delight; to visually present brilliant writing in a way that enhances the reading experience; to create the magazine we’ve always wanted to read, with pieces that stay with you long after you’ve finished your coffee and closed the last page.
Who We Are: The Extra Teeth Team
Extra Teeth is the brain-baby of two ambitious, creative women with decades of collective experience in the book business and who are well-established in the Scottish literary scene.
Jules Danskin runs Golden Hare Books, an independent bookshop in Edinburgh, recently crowned Independent Bookshop of the Year for the whole of the UK and Ireland. Because she hates free time and wouldn’t know how to relax if you paid her to do it, she programmes Book Fringe, runs the Bibliophile podcast and has never met a jumpsuit she didn’t like.
Heather Parry is a writer and editor based in Glasgow. Her work has been widely published and performed, and she’s won both the Bridge Award for an Emerging Writer and Cove Park’s Emerging Writer residency. Heather has worked in the publishing industry for 15 years, producing print magazines, books and events across the fiction and non-fiction spectrum. If you stand still for too long, Heather will cook you brunch.
Words With Bite: Issue One Writers
We have been overwhelmed by the positive response from our dream team of writers for the first issue. As a bookseller and writer duo, we've approached writers we love and who we've met, interviewed, made friends and hosted events with. Scottish writing is at the forefront and we are so excited to announce new fiction from established voices Janice Galloway (The Trick is to Keep Breathing; Jellyfish), Kirsty Logan (The Gloaming; The Rental Heart & Other Stories) and Martin MacInnes (Infinite Ground; winner of Manchester Fiction Prize).
We are also proud to publish emerging writers in Scotland Jay G Ying (writing in The White Review; Ambit), Jess Brough (gal-dem, The Bi-ble) and Dave Coates (Saboteur Award for Best Reviewer 2015) whose essay on Super Mario games and poetry is one of the pieces that inspired us to set up Extra Teeth in the first place.
Based between Edinburgh and Glasgow, we want Extra Teeth to provide space for a whole host of writers from and working in Scotland, fostering a community focused on great writing and fair pay. The magazine has an international outlook, with Issue One featuring Lisa McInerney (The Glorious Heresies; winner of the Baileys Women's Prize for Fiction), Nicole Flattery (Show Them a Good Time; winner of White Review Short Story Prize). We're also proud to feature brilliant writers who've made the Scotland and the UK their home, including Leila Aboulela (Bird Summons; Elsewhere, Home), Sheena Kalayil (The Wild Wind; The Inheritance) and Camilla Grudova (The Doll's Alphabet). We are delighted to feature an essay on translation by the Latin American scholar and founder of Edinburgh-based publisher Charco Press, Carolina Orloff.
The launch issue of Extra Teeth has been entirely commissioned by Heather and Jules, but future issues will be open to submissions; look out for the Issue Two callout coming before the end of 2019. We'll also be looking for (paid!) readers, and will be extending special invitation to those from under-represented groups for these roles.
Something About Maria: Issue One Guest Illustrator
We want each issue of Extra Teeth to be different—really different. While it's important we have a clear brand aesthetic (which, thanks to the talents of Esther Clayton, we do), each issue of the magazine is going to be totally unique as there will be a guest illustrator we love making the look and tone of the issue their own.
When we discussed illustrators for Issue One, we knew Maria Stoian would be perfect—and we're so delighted she said yes! Maria has brought her expertise to the overall project, and has given us great advice regarding fair illustrator pay and how to push the boundaries. Maria will be contributing:
- an original front and back cover
- illustrations throughout responding to written pieces
- a pull-out print (super collectable!)
Dedication to great design
Our designer, the brilliant and visionary Esther Clayton, will make the magazine look as good as a Mini Milk on a hot summer’s day. We're dedicated to brilliant design and quality printing, but we also believe that the magazine's visuals should complement and enhance the writing. Why not have a magazine that's as beautiful to look at as it is to read? We strongly believe that if you're going to print on paper, you have to make it worthwhile.
To that end, Esther is our design magician, bringing an incredible amount of experience in visual presentation. Her work is bold, creative and unafraid, and she’s worked with so many brands she can no longer keep count. She boasts a large client list across Scotland and beyond and we’re honoured to have her on board.
The most basic way to support Extra Teeth is by pre-ordering Issue One (at a special Kickstarter discount), which will get you 10 short stories and 2 essays wrapped up in a gorgeously illustrated package — but for you keen beans who need more bite in your life we've also got some sweet and stylish rewards!
We're excited to be able to feature work from both Maria Stoian and Esther Clayton in our backer reward packages. Whether you want some pin badge bling to spice up your look or some limited-edition artwork for your reading room, a beautiful tote to carry your reading matter or a T-shirt to tell the world you're not to be messed with, we've got a supporter level to suit you.
And for those of you with big pockets and hearts, a truly unique experience: a whole day's worth of reading, writing, eating and bookselling joy with Extra Teeth founders Heather and Jules (with the bundle of all other rewards to take away too)!
- Printing: Print is definitely not dead—and we're going to prove it! We'll be using Edinburgh-based printers Allander and the highest quality the paper stock which will always be good, because we're nerds about that kind of thing.
- Fair pay for contributors: We are committed to paying our writers and illustrators fairly. Each author will receive a £100 fee for their work and our guest illustrator will receive £500. We will never charge for submissions, ever. We Will also be paying our super-dedicated and talented designer Esther fairly for her time and wonder. For all the additions that come with magazine production, we'll be using local business and creative and paying at a fair rate.
- Supporting events: Who doesn't love a magazine launch? In order to support our contributors we'll be programming a number of events around the launch of each issue, to provide space for writers to perform their work, develop their public profile and build a community around the magazine and the Scottish literary scene as a whole.
- Longevity: By helping us reach our goal, you're helping us to ensure the future of Extra Teeth. This goal will cover total production costs for Issue One, establishing a business model that will (hopefully) take us well into the future.
We'll be having a party! A launch party to be precise! Thrown by the excellent folks at Lighthouse Books, there'll be readings and chat and music and maybe definitely snacks from one of Edinburgh's hottest cafes. Keep your eyes peeled for updates on that front, because it's going to be a riot!
If you're a retailer and would be interested in becoming a stockist, you can support Extra Teeth by pre-ordering copies wholesale through our Kickstarter. Please email firstname.lastname@example.org if you're interested.
Risks and challenges
This is a new venture for us, and as such comes with a range of challenges—some we can foresee and some we can't. As a magazine we are unknown quantity, and though we have a large amount of relevant experience, we are sailing fresh waters on this one. However, we have established contributors, illustrator, designer, printer and distributor in place.
Though we have allowed ourselves a generous timeline (with an estimated delivery date of November), there is a risk of a delay in production somewhere along the line. Though some authors have already submitted, the deadline for the remaining Issue One authors is at the end of August, so there is a small risk of an author dropping out of the project due to unexpected circumstances. We believe have designed a timeline that allows for delays without de-railing the projected delivery date overall.
We live in a world where digital content is becoming the norm, and where print magazines working to an outdated business model are dropped out of circulation. This is where your assistance comes in; by pre-ordering via the Kickstarter you are helping us to establish a definite market and factor this in when ordering a print run so that we can budget accordingly and minimise losses.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
