About this Project

This summer, I'm rowing 3000 miles along the River Thames and around Great Britain, following routes taken by the Vikings 1000 years ago. The expedition will take 14 weeks, rowing up to 15 hours a day, and visiting places with a Viking connection. Being in an ocean rowing boat will give me a fascinating perspective of Britain from the sea and an insight into what it means to be a British islander as I meet people with different regional dialects and heritage around the coast. As well as setting Guinness World Records on this epic adventure (as yet no one has ever rowed solo around Great Britain), I'll use wearable technology and a virtual learning platform to share every whale sighting, geological fault line, and collected scientific data on things like my poo, nutritional intake, and psychological performance, with platform users, Kickstarter backers, and scientists, worldwide. Some of the psychological tests have been provided by NASA and are used on the International Space Station to monitor the health of astronauts after space walks, so it will be really interesting to see the impacts of life on a boat.

We're already collecting scientific data for NASA, University of Roehampton, Wyle Laboratories, and Adventurers and Scientists for Conservation. You can find out more about the research side of the expedition here.

Just one of the psychological tests I will undertake during the expedition.

Last year Skype named me as a 'woman changing the world through technology' to mark International Women's Day, and I plan to row an ocean every year to raise funds to provide disadvantaged children with education and the chance to rise above poverty and barriers to learning.

The Next Step

I've already got an incredible support team, a virtual learning platform, wearable technology, and a boat hull designed by maritime architect Phil Morrison. There are over 17,000 children following the project, from 53 countries, and I connect regularly with schools worldwide through Skype in the Classroom. There is no limit to the number of people that can potentially be reached via the virtual learning platform during each expedition and its a really cost effective way of communicating with students.

In my role as a STEM Ambassador I've already displayed the boat at the Olympic Park in London, engaging 100,000 inner city students with science, technology, engineering and maths in a real life context. The only thing left to do, is to raise the final £35,000 to complete the boat and install the electrical, communication, and navigation equipment. Its going to be an awesome boat, that can be used every year to continue raising funds for children in developed countries like the UK and USA, as well as those in developing countries, with the chance to really inspire and share this world first expedition with project backers through the online platform, in a way that no one has ever done before. I've already got a publicist and it is very likely there will be a documentary film and a book after the expedition is completed in September 2015.

What's On the Virtual Learning Platform?

The platform is designed as an informal, fun, educational tool for 5-19 year olds, but will appeal to ANYONE of ANY age. By backing this project, you will have access to the virtual learning platform for the Great British Viking Quest expedition and ALL FUTURE EXPEDITIONS, with exclusive, behind the scenes content and updates that won't be available anywhere else. You'll be able to interact with myself and the land crew throughout the expedition, thanks to a forum for posting questions and comments, and we'll even be running 'Google hangouts' and 'virtual field trips' from key locations.

The platform, is a little bit like Facebook (here's our Facebook page), in that you have a newsfeed, and receive notifications when something you are following gets posted. This might be a photograph of an iconic building like the Houses of Parliament or Blackpool Tower, a video of a pod of dolphins swimming around the boat, a virtual field trip to Lindisfarne where the Vikings arrived in their boats 1000 years ago, a drawing of a puffin, or a soundbite of a cormorant talking to its mate. If you are scientifically or mathematically minded, you'll especially enjoy the raw data about weather, wave action, my muscle movements, brain waves, heart rate, or reading a blog post about the myself or the team's day so far. Plus you can make suggestions for places you would like us to visit on the journey, or even give us a guided tour when we get to your region.

I was honoured to speak at the Southbank Centre, London on 'The Internet of Things'. 25 years since Sir Tim Berners-Lee invented the World Wide Web, and a discussion of the future of technology and the internet. (Photo courtesy of the event).

If you are a wearable tech designer, I'll take your kit on the expedition, photograph myself (and land support team) using it and give you feedback on how it performed. One of the pieces of kit I'll personally be testing is Google Glass, to see whether it might be possible to invite platform users to 'hang out' during live sightings of basking sharks, or historical building visits.

Through the virtual learning platform, you'll track the team in real time, and receive updates of performance dates and venues for my family friendly, science comedy show about the expedition, 'What Not to Eat at Sea'.  This will be performed at venues along the River Thames and around the coast of Britain throughout the expedition, as well as the Southbank Centre in London and the Everyman Theatre in Liverpool in May 2015, Royal Geographical Society, London in September, and overseas including the Royal Geographical Society in Hong Kong during November and December 2015. If you can't make it to one of the shows, you can always select one of the Kickstarter rewards (£250) and I will come and perform the show for you ANYWHERE IN THE WORLD.

Oceans Project's Story - How Did it All Start?

Oceans Project began in 2010, as a one off lesson with my class in the former Soviet Republic of Georgia.  I was using the BBC Oceans television series to engage my teenage students in English as a foreign language, but was blown away with how excited they were to see the TV presenters go scuba diving and meet the creatures living beneath the waves. Over a couple of years, our lessons became an after school club and summer camp, with children aged 5-25 from across the region. We started to use Skype to connect with children in different countries, and with scientists and explorers.

Below is a video of one of our clean up days, collecting plastic and rubbish from biodiversity hotspots in Georgia. The video was made by the students, and was one of a number of field trip and voluntary days within our community. We made it on to the Russian and Georgian news as Georgia doesn't really have a culture of volunteer action.

In late 2012, there was a period of human rights protests which made it too dangerous for students to cross town for sessions, so we trialled an online version of 'Oceans Project', and were really surprised when students from around the world started to join us online. It was only when I returned to the UK in 2013, that I discovered the invention of touch screens phones and iPads, wearable technology, and virtual learning platforms. The idea of using technology to bring the outside world in to any environment, began to grow and through a publicist we are now able to raise extra funds through paid media interviews and giving talks and science comedy shows. These enable us to continue running the project and to provide education to children who don't have the chance to attend school.

The longer term goal is to invite special guests, mentors, and teachers to engage with students on the platform, and for students to teach each other about the things they are most interested in. The platform could potentially save lives, by running sessions on hand washing, nutrition, child care, and basic first aid, or sessions on grant writing, sign language, or English as a foreign language to help NGO's abroad apply for funding.

Money raised during each expedition will help us to buy tablet computers, solar chargers, and internet access for children's projects where there is little or no chance for children to attend school. Some of these children work on a rubbish dump to earn money to feed their siblings, others lost parents to HIV and AIDS, some have been human trafficked, and some were orphaned due to gender or disability. In each case, we know that having access to education and English as a foreign language will improve their chances of earning a better living and new opportunities. A key strength of the virtual learning platform, is that it involves peer to peer teaching and learning, with children in developed countries valuing the access to education they have, whilst teaching disadvantaged students who don't have access to school, but who are incredibly inspirational and help the more affluent students learn about the wider world, and other cultures and traditions.

Risks and challenges

Oceans Project began in a classroom with no electricity, no books, no heating, no lights, and with a class that I was told were 'unteachable' and 'a waste of time'. From nothing, we grew something amazing together, and against all the odds, others started to join us, offering their time, energy, and skills. A number of those students have gone on to win scholarships to study abroad. Giving up a stable career as a neuropsychologist to work full time on a new, unfunded charity was a huge and incredibly daunting challenge, but more than worth it to use education to change the life of even just one child, stuck in poverty or written off by society through no fault of their own. We have a solid history of not quitting, and will always try every possible solution until we find the one that works.
