Although the campaign is over, you can still pledge money through Paypal and receive rewards while the game is in development.
I'd recommend watching the Super Mario Bros. Crossover 2.0 Trailer to get a general idea of what the gameplay will be like, but keep in mind it will be greatly expanded.

Update #2: Stretch Goals
Yay!!! With everyone's help, we reached our goal of $10,000. Thank you to everyone that helped make this happen.
And now the real fun begins... here are some additional things we can add to the game with some extra money.
$20,000 - Time Attack, Leader Boards, Achievements
We'll add a time attack mode that will allow you to replay levels as fast as you can. This will also include leader boards that will show your top time for each character. We'll also add an achievement system to the game and when possible, we'll integrate it with whatever platform you're playing on.
$30,000 - Translation into multiple languages
We will translate all of the text in the game into French, Italian, German, and Spanish. We may also consider doing other languages.
$40,000 - Eve VII playable plus additional levels
Eve VII, piloted by Frederick, will be playable and fully integrated into the main story. This means there will also be a complete world (5 levels) added to the main game that will be based on the world Frederick comes from. This world will include unique enemies and a boss. If Eve VII is added, there will be 9 worlds total. If not, there will be 8. This also means there will be additional music tracks and cut scenes in the game.
$50,000 - Documentary
A documentary will be made about the development of the game. Click here for more info.
We may consider adding more stretch goals, but money beyond $50,000 will focus on speeding up development of the game and improving the quality of the documentary.
Update #1: New Rewards and Other Stuff
Here's our first video update for the campaign. The following points are made in the video:
- SRS is not simply a rehash of SMBC. It will have a lot of new stuff.
- Some people made fan art! Awesome.
- I'm doing an AMA on Reddit on June 26th at 12:00 PM pacific time.
- I changed some of the rewards on the Kickstarter to give people more value.
- We're looking for ideas for stretch goals.
- We're very thankful for everyone's support!
- I forgot to mention in the video, but we're adding Linux support.
Memories of Retro
Remember the good old days when playing through an entire game only took a few hours? Remember when graphics were simple and inspired, and gameplay was fun and unique?
I remember those times, and that's why I'm creating a game that celebrates them. I already created a game called Super Mario Bros. Crossover that combines a bunch of games into one. But now, I'd like to take it a step further by creating my own original game.
Super Retro Squad
Super Retro Squad is a 2D platformer that features characters inspired by classic video game characters. These characters will feature unique gameplay, but their core will be based on the originals. This way, you get something old and something new, and it's all combined together for a fresh, fun experience.
The game will feature 40+ levels that will be spanned across 8 worlds. Each world will be based on one of the characters, so there will be plenty of variety found in the environments and enemies. There will also be an equipment and upgrade system that will allow you to customize your character's abilities, strengths, and weaknesses. We also plan on tying everything together with a cool story that will be explained through dialog and cut scenes.
This truly will be a fun project to both play and work on, and we believe our team is strong enough to pull it off. Please show your support and become a part of the project by helping us out!
If you're unfamiliar with my previous game, Super Mario Bros. Crossover, you can see a trailer here. You can also play the game. That game should demonstrate to you that I have what it takes to make an awesome game.
Exploding Rabbit doesn't make much money right now, so everyone on the team is working for free. I'll use the funding to help pay the team when they need it. If we get a lot of extra, I could pay everyone a fair amount for the work they do and possibly even hire them all as full time employees.
Another thing that would really help us is software. We're building the game with Unity, and if we were able to afford Unity Pro, it'd give us access to more features that would make our lives easier. It would also be helpful to get devices, like Apple and Android devices, that we can use to test the game as we build for those platforms.
There are a variety of rewards for pledging to this project. For just $15 you can get a DRM-free version of the game on Mac, PC, and Linux, access to a private forum on the Exploding Rabbit Forums, and the documentary episodes (if we surpass $50,000). This forum will have inside info on the game from the developers. For $30 you also get the soundtrack and an HD download of the documentary with extras (if we surpass $50,000). Another great reward is access to the beta of the game, which you can have for $45.
Above the beta are some fun rewards that allow you to be in the game or to even play the game as yourself. For $2000, you can get Jay to do one of his famous "Let's Plays". Here are some links to his previous videos. Note that they contain vulgar language:

Jay Pavlina - Game Designer / Lead Programmer
Jay went to school for filmmaking, but ended up finding more success in game development after the release of his first game, Super Mario Bros. Crossover.
Zach Robinson - Graphics
Zach has been a member of the team for over a year. All of the custom graphics in SMBC 2.0 were done by him.
Blaine Hanna - Graphics / General Helper
Blaine asked to join the team even before Jay knew he wanted a team. He demonstrated his skills by posting many great skins on the forums.
Fabien Campaner - Graphics / Level Design
Fabien initially joined the project as a musician, but Jay quickly discovered his awesome graphics and level design skills after playing his game, 0'Brothers.
Colin McFarlane - Programmer
Colin was very active in reporting bugs for Super Mario Bros. Crossover, and he was first in line when Jay said he was looking for programmers.
Jessy Catterwaul - Programmer
Jessy helped Jay solve a problem, and because he was so helpful and knowledgeable, Jay asked him to join.
Exploding Rabbit is a game development studio started in April 2010 by Jay Pavlina when he released Super Mario Bros. Crossover. It has recently been growing and now consists of 8 people. Exploding Rabbit likes to create games with fun, unique gameplay and interesting characters. They also prefer to make games that are simple in their design but are still fun and challenging.
No. The gameplay will be expanded quite a bit. This game will have vertical scrolling and all sorts of fun platforming goodies. It will also have an equipment system that will allow you to customize your character's abilities and strengths/weaknesses. You'll have to play levels multiple times with different characters in order to find hidden items.
Mac, Pc, Linux, Android, and iOS. We also plan to support the OUYA console.
You'll get a DRM-free version for Mac, PC, and Linux. If the game is accepted on Steam, you'll also be able to get it on there with a code.
I would tell you if I knew. If we make enough money to pay people it would go faster. Right now things are slow with the team because of their jobs. I put a tentative date of March 2013... but that is just a random guess. I probably wouldn't expect it earlier than that though unless there is some miracle where everyone is able to work full time without distractions.
Don't forget we have to finish porting SMBC to Unity first also. It makes sense to do that anyway because SRS builds upon the features and gameplay of SMBC.
We plan on keeping the core gameplay similar, but we would like to add unique things to each character. If you look at how I modified the characters in SMBC, that will give you an idea, like when I added wall and ceiling jumping to SOPHIA III. The core will be similar, but we'll add our own unique flavor so that the characters feel familiar, yet new.
We have decided to omit SOPHIA because she is the most complicated character in SMBC and it would take a long time to get her working in SRS. We feel our time is better spent on balancing the characters and finishing the game. It is possible we could add her and other characters as DLC after the game is released.
We decided to add a stretch goal for our Eve VII, our character based on SOPHIA III. If we the goal, we will add Eve VII to the main game.
Yes we will definitely have a lossless version available. I don't know exactly what formats we will offer, but we'll be sure to have both lossless and compressed versions.
