We started EXPANSION in 2018 with the goal of e x p a n d i n g Lexington's music scene by inviting some of the best psychedelic rock and experimental musicians to Lexington who otherwise might not come to town, while giving a platform for local artists to share their music with an eager crowd.
EXPANSION 2019 will feature some amazing, internationally-touring artists such as DEAKIN (Animal Collective), Austin cosmic rockers The Bright Light Social Hour, hazy beach pop from LA's Sugar Candy Mountain and Nashville's Lasso Spells, as well as local/regional standouts Sweet Country Meat Boys, WHAMMMOTH, Seahags and more TBA + visuals from analog liquid light artists Silver Cord Cinema (Nashville), projection-mapper Psensibil, and projection art from Dead A/V.

We're attempting to raise $3,333. Please know that every dollar that is contributed will go into making EXPANSION 2019 even bigger and better than it is already shaping up to be. Why the odd number? Kickstarter charges a small percentage for their service so in order to get the full amount we need, we've included the platform's "tax" to our final amount. These funds will go towards event production, even more art installations, decorations, venue rentals and hospitality for our traveling musicians. There are no salaries here - it all goes straight to enhancing the EXPANSION experience for the attendees.
Who are we? I'm Jared Lee - I started Dead Audio (music/live event promotion company) a few years ago to share the great music I was experiencing in Lexington and around the state, and I've enlisted a collective of passionate live music fans and friends that want to bring new, diverse, fun and visually-enhanced music to Lexington, and I couldn't do this without their support to help make this thing happen.
This isn't our first rodeo, so you can be sure we at least think we know what we're doing. Last year, for the first year of EXPANSION we brought in some incredible psychedelic bands such as Spaceface and Brothers Griiin (both side projects of Flaming Lips), Ttotals (Nashville) and local rockers Idiot Glee, Sweet Country Meat Boys, Jovontaes and more, plus visual artists from around the country that turned the venues into a hyper-colorful, trippy wonderland.
On a personal note, music festivals and concerts have always provided the experiences that inspire us the most, where we feel the most ourselves, and the most connected to the friends and family sharing the experience with us. The vision of EXPANSION is to introduce new artists to our community and to inspire others to seek out these artists, or to create art themselves. Ultimately, we envision this festival will expand our local music scene and encourage artists who might not otherwise come to our city to perform in what we know is one of the most exciting times to be a music fan in Lexington, Kentucky.
Risks and challenges
The only risk is the possibility of a band cancelling due to a major issue on the artist-side. EXPANSION takes place at insured, up-to-code venues and all performers, venues and partners are either paid upfront and/or have contractual obligations to perform.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
