*** CAMPAIGN HAS ENDED ***
Thank you to all of our backers and for all of the great support we have received throughout the campaign. We couldn’t have done it without you! We’ve blown away our goal and passed our stretch goal by a good margin!
If you are already a current backer and have made a pledge on Kickstarter you will receive a survey in a few week and will be allowed to modify your reward level at that time as well as add some additional products if you wish.
If you missed the campaign but would still like to order fireSLEEVE please follow the instructions on our website at www.exotac.com/fireSLEEVE.
We will continue to add updates as we progress through the manufacturing process so stay tuned!
Here at Exotac, we love fire. It’s the most critical component in a survival situation, yet the basic options out there haven’t evolved much. We’re here to change that. Your basic lighter is still the easiest-to-use fire source, but there are some serious limitations. If it gets wet, forget about using it until hours later when the flint has dried out. Want to secure it to your pack so you’re sure it won’t get lost? Too bad. Need to keep the gas button depressed for awhile to light your fire? Hope you like a seriously hot thumb. These might sound like only minor annoyances, but if you’re ever in a survival situation and fire becomes your #1 priority, it’s no longer a minor problem to find that your lighter is missing or unusable.
We've designed the fireSLEEVE to fit the Bic Classic Lighter like a glove and fix all of those problems. We relentlessly tweaked the design and sorted through dozens of materials until we found the perfect combination of high end polymers to give you the feel and performance you need. Throughout the design process we also field tested to ensure that the fireSLEEVE will perform under harsh conditions so you can be sure that it will work flawlessly when you really need it.
We've met our stretch goal of $45,000 which has unlocked a high-vis special edition fireSLEEVE that is glow in the dark and will include 3ft of glow in the dark and reflective paracord. Please see update 5 for details! Thanks for your support!

Exotac is an outdoor survival company that focuses on re-engineering the science of fire starting. We're a home-grown U.S.-based company that started in 2010 in our founder’s basement. We've grown our business by prioritizing innovation, uncompromised quality and meticulous attention to detail. We design gear to last without any excuses.
You need your lighter to work when you need it, which is why we have designed the fireSLEEVE to float as well as withstand submersion to a depth of 1 meter for up to 30 minutes. It is critical to protect the flint and other parts of the sparking mechanism because they are extremely susceptible to corrosion. The tight seal of the cap keeps these parts dry and protected from water and humidity. You won’t have to worry about rain, a spill in your pack, or dropping your lighter in water by accident. Your lighter will work immediately, not hours later after the flint finally dried enough to throw a spark again.
KEEP YOUR GAS TO YOURSELF
Nobody likes an empty lighter. We engineered fireSLEEVE's cap to keep the gas button from accidentally being pressed during transport in your pack or pocket.
Fingers are for climbing not burning. This is why we created the patent pending Gas Lock which holds the gas button down for you. This makes lighting your campfire or stove significantly easier and safer.
Don't be that guy who's always bumming a lighter. The fireSLEEVE gives you two attachment points so there's no excuse for losing it. Put one on your keychain for the city or wear one around your neck on a rafting trip.
Here in Georgia, the woods have an almost-spooky ability to suck up anything placed on the forest floor. Don't lose the cap while using the fireSLEEVE; slip it over the bottom for storage while in use.
GET SOME GRIP
Dirty, cold or sweaty hands are no match for this lighter case. The body of fireSLEEVE is made from a soft-touch grippy material which is extremely helpful when wearing gloves or in wet or cold conditions.
We take pleasure in starving the landfills of disposable items. While the Bic isn't helping our cause, the fireSLEEVE is reuseable. If you do manage to use up the butane within the lighter, simply pull it from the sleeve and replace it with a new one. Because we're using the best selling lighter in the world, it is available in nearly every country.
MADE IN THE USA
We manufacture over 95% of our products and components right here in the USA. The fireSLEEVE will be manufactured and assembled right here in Georgia. Because we don't have plastic injection molding machines in our facility, we will use a local mold shop to mold the cap and body. The inspection, assembly and packaging will be done in our facility.
We fight the trend of outsourcing and instead work to be as vertically integrated as possible. This ensures we achieve the highest quality product while also avoiding the environmental and economical cost of shipping the product from halfway around the world.
After going through many different design iterations and testing we decided on this design for usability, durability, and efficiency of manufacturing. Below you can see the process that brought us to our final design.
For the body of the fireSLEEVE, we selected a high quality TPE (thermoplastic elastomer) despite the higher cost due to the superior durability, innate grip function, and its ability to double as a gasket. The cap is made from an ultra-durable glass filled nylon which is often used in military grade equipment.
WHERE WE ARE NOW
After spending the last eight months designing and testing the fireSLEEVE through numerous soft and hard tool revisions, the molds are currently pending our final sample approval.
The products you see being used in the video and many of the images are some of the first and second round samples out of the mold. We are just about ready to gear up for production and that's where you come in.
We need to purchase a significant quantity of both fireSLEEVE components as well as packaging to cover the minimum order quantities with our local vendors.
With your help we can bring the fireSLEEVE to market at a great price and get our product into the hands of outdoor enthusiasts everywhere!
WHERE WE ARE GOING
This is our anticipated production schedule; any updates to this schedule will be communicated through backer updates:
October: Start our Kickstarter campaign! Finalize mold. Continue working on packaging design.
November: Mold arrives at our mold shop and goes through setup and testing. Finish packaging design and start packaging production.
December: Start production of fireSLEEVE and begin inspection, assembly and packaging. Orders could start shipping as early as the end of December.
January: Our goal is to have all orders shipped in January. Any updates to the schedule will be communicated to our backers through updates.
*** INTERNATIONAL (including Alaska & Hawaii) REWARDS CANNOT INCLUDE A LIGHTER DUE TO SHIPPING RESTRICTIONS. PLEASE MAKE SURE YOU HAVE ACCESS TO A BIC CLASSIC LIGHTER PRIOR TO PURCHASING. THE fireSLEEVE IS DESIGNED TO SPECIFICALLY FIT A BIC CLASSIC LIGHTER. ***
Risks and challenges
We are currently in the final stages of testing our third round of mold changes. Following approval of the sample parts we will have our molds sent to our mold shop for production. Because we have been working diligently to test and improve the production parts, we are confident in the performance of the product thus far.
Identified risk areas (items we have not finalized):
1. Waiting for third round samples from the mold maker for testing - If the samples do not pass our inspection and testing we will need to make additional changes to the mold which may introduce some small delay (1-2 weeks per change).
2. We are in the design phase of our packaging - we need to ensure we have listed the proper warnings on the packaging and that the packaging properly fits the product. Likely the packaging will be ready long before the mold.
3. Shipping - we have thoroughly researched the proper method to ship a flammable gas (Bic lighter) and have spoken to many shippers (UPS, USPS, FedEx) regarding their specific policies. We are waiting to obtain an exemption number to ship under.
Creating a great, long lasting product is hard especially when it’s designed to be used in the harsh conditions you meet in the outdoors. Luckily we are no stranger to making well-built, functional, outdoor products that stand the test of time. We design our products using the best materials available and spend plenty of time testing and validating our products in the field.
One of the ways we mitigate the risks of launching a new product is by using local suppliers. All of the parts and packaging are made right here in the USA with most of our suppliers being a short drive away so we can catch problems before they come up and keep an eye on every step of the manufacturing and packaging.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
