In 2012, we ran a successful Kickstarter campaign to publish the first two collected volumes of Extra Ordinary Comics. Both books contained 100 comics each, and now that we've passed 300 comics, we have enough for Volume 3!
After the last Kickstarter project, Li was able to quit her day job and now works on Exocomics full time. It's not making us a lot of money, but Li is thrilled to be working hard at something she loves, and it's all thanks to our awesome readers. Thanks, everyone!
Publishing a book is definitely not cheap, so we've decided to use Kickstarter again to help fund Volume 3. Since last time, Kickstarter has become available in New Zealand! We've made a new, New Zealand Kickstarter profile and this project is in NZ dollars.
We were incredibly overwhelmed by the amount of support we received last time, and the extra money meant that we could choose better quality stock to make the books even nicer than we had planned. A lot of the extra funds also went towards shipping, as we had massively underestimated how much that would cost.
As you saw in the comic above, we want to make two books:
Extra Ordinary Volume 3:
- 20.5cm square
- approx. 144 pages
- perfect bound
Volume 3 will stylistically match Volumes 1 and 2. It will be the collection of comics 201 – 299, and contain extra doodles, sketches, commentary and exclusive, brand-new artwork.
- 16.5cm x 23.3cm
- full colour
- approx. 24 pages
This will be the book version of our milestone #300 comic. We decided to make comic #300 into it's own book for a couple of reasons: firstly, the pages were drawn on A4 paper and don't fit well in a square book, but also the comic is pretty much a self-contained, long-form story, so we thought it would be neat to publish it separately like an issue of a real comic!
All physical book rewards will be signed by Li (she signed over 1,200 books last time!) Both books will be beautifully offset printed right here in Auckland, New Zealand. We're lucky enough to once again work with award-winning designer Kyra Clarke of Threaded magazine. Kyra helped us make Volume 1 and 2 and they turned out pretty damn good!
Please note that since Kickstarter is now available in New Zealand, this project is in New Zealand Dollars (NZD), unlike our last Kickstarter project, which was in USD. NZ$1 is about US$0.85.
Here is a simple chart showing a breakdown of what you get in each reward tier:
Every pledge of the minimum of $9 or more will get your name printed on the special Kickstarter Backer's page of Volume 3. It looks like this!
Artbook: Every pledge of the minimum amount or more will also get a beautifully laid out, digital collection of the best exocomics artwork that Li has produced since 2012. The artbook will also contain exclusive, never before seen artwork.
Every pledge of $25 or more also gets the digital versions of Extra Ordinary Volume 1, 2 & 3, as well as comic #300 in PDF.
Apart from comic #300, we don't sell any of the other PDFs outside of Kickstarter so it's your only chance to get them!
Li will be making a limited edition, Kickstarter-only, A2 size poster for pledges over NZ$155. Each poster will be signed, and shipped separately in a tube (we won't be sending any folded this time). Like last time, what the poster will actually look like is a secret until you receive it, but here's what the limited edition poster from our last project looked like:
At the $300 tier, Li will draw a totally original picture on the title page of your copy of Vol 3, featuring you with the Exocomics characters. Here are some examples from last time:
One year of Postcards
Be Li's penpal for a year! Every month for twelve months I will send you a postcard-sized exocomics print with writing and doodles on the back, letting you know what I'm up to. You don't have to write me back, but come on, don't make me a one sided penpal.
Limited to 5 backers only, and includes everything in the $300 tier!
Original cover artwork
The $1,500 rewards are for the original pencil artwork that Li made to create the cover art for Vol 3 and comic #300. Each one is framed with a colour print of the final covers, signed, and comes with everything in the $300 bundle as well. These turned out really cool last time, we were really happy with the result. They looked like this:
Last time, we tried to create a system to minimise everyone's shipping costs, but it turned out quite complicated and ended up costing us way more than we expected. This time, we'd like to aim for a really simple solution. Some shipping is still included with each reward, but there's a simpler system:
- New Zealand: You don't have to pay any shipping!
- Australia: Your case is special: click here for information
- Everyone else: Just pay the amount Kickstarter says for your reward tier.
Thats it! Hopefully it will cover all our costs and be manageable for everyone.
Risks and challenges
This isn't the first time we've self published exocomics books so we're confident that we can do it. We've done it before! And now we have the experience from that time to boot.
There were several challenges that we overcame last time: I designed the books from scratch, and had never done it before. This time, I've already completed most of the design work beforehand, and I know what to expect during the rest of the process. There were some issues with printing, which meant that the books had to be sent back to be fixed, and caused a delay in delivery. We kept our backers updated throughout the whole process and everything turned out fine. We'll be starting the process ahead of schedule this year, so we should be able to send rewards out earlier. Shipping cost way more than we thought, and a lot of our over-target money from last time got sucked up dealing with shipping. This time we have a simpler shipping system and should have all our bases covered.
We'll still be posting updates once a week as we did last time, so that you can keep up to date with how the project is doing. If you have any questions or comments, you can email us at email@example.com or leave a comment on this page.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
