About

Important note for people pledging from outside the UK: you can contribute too! We’ve included the approximate $ equivalent in each tier, and Kickstarter will do the monetary conversion for you when you pledge.

We plan to put together, illustrate, print and ship (in ebook format too, of course) six books set in the dragon-centric world of Calibran. The books are a collection of classic fantasy stories detailing characters, events, myths and battles, all contributing to the Dragon Throne War setting. For more info on the content of each book, read THIS UPDATE.

UPDATE 11: We will be back!

With TV series like Game Of Thrones going mainstream, and Tolkien-inspired movies routinely steamrolling the box office, fantasy fans have never had it so good. We grew up spending our weekends rolling dice and eating unhealthy snacks in dim living rooms whilst having a damn good time impersonating improbable adventurers on a quest to retrieve a powerful magical artifact -- just because a shady figure in a tavern asked us to. We attended gaming and comics fairs long before such venues were en vogue, and the word “cosplay” didn’t yet exist. We spent countless hours reading every bit of fantasy we could, because the stories spoke to us in a way that others couldn’t.

We’re quite pleased with fantasy’s recent popularity surge, but we can’t help noticing that the tone of current fantasy offerings is very different from what we remember so fondly. For example, the ingenuity and sense of wonder we experienced while playing Dragonlance, looking at Larry Elmore’s illustrations or reading The Hobbit has now been infused with all kinds of influences, ranging from real-world political intrigue to reflections on current social issues. To be clear, we believe that some of this “next-gen fantasy” is outstanding, but we still find ourselves longing for a fantasy setting that doesn’t forcibly integrate modern standards, and instead carries the torch of what we define as “classic fantasy”.

Thus was born the idea for Dragon Throne War, a setting for those who fondly remember such worlds -- and for newcomers interested in a genuine fantasy narrative.

Dragon Throne War is a "foundation setting" that, as the story progresses, can be expanded in several directions. Taking D&D, Dragonlance and LOTR as examples, the first logical step for us was to establish Calibran, the world in which Dragon Throne War is set, through stories of its lands and inhabitants.

For this Kickstarter campaign, we plan to deliver six books – what we call “the saga” – detailing the world, races and myths of Calibran. Additional material might be added to the core offering, according to unlocked stretch goals (see below for details).

For a breakdown of each book's content, check UPDATE 7: An outline of the stories included in the Dragon Throne War saga.

This might change (for the better) according to unlocked stretch goals. The average page count per book will be 200+. Book 1 – The Blue Dragon’s War – which is already finalized and ready for printing, is 128 pages.

For a taste of Calibran, feel free to download the first chapter from Book 1 of the saga -- The Blue Dragon’s War, written by Sean Newton.

The map of Calibran

Calibran is a vast world, teeming with diverse races and creatures. For thousand of years its lands have been the dominion of the Dragonkind -- keepers of wisdom, strength and magic. After many centuries of undisputed rule, the appearance of the first mortal races created a schism at the very core of dragon society. First the Elves, then the Dwarves, then the others: Humans, Minotaurs, Orcs, and other sub-races. Their mere existence felt like a threat to some dragons. “The mortals are dangerous”, said some. “They grow like weeds and spread like fungi. Everything they touch is changed or destroyed”. Others felt differently: “They are an industrious lot and, despite their considerable limitations, they’ve grown and prospered. As stewards of Calibran, should we not take them under our care and nurture them -- within set boundaries, of course?”. An agreement was impossible to reach, leading to a centuries-long war known as the Age of Bloodshed. The war ended with the Battle of Farsalon, the biggest battle in Calibran’s history. Despite their physical and intellectual superiority, the dragons that despised the mortal races were overwhelmed by the sheer number, technological and magical advancements of the mortal armies which fought them. Greatly reduced in number, most of the defeated flew to a corner of Calibran called The Horns, to heal their wounds and plot revenge.

The subsequent decades were known as the Age of Unity, a 250-year period during which the Dragon Throne was established. Being King of the Dragon Throne meant being able to rule the realm. The title, after being awarded first to Lord Aramnor, the hero of the Battle of Farsalon, was passed on to other worthy candidates, regardless of race, provided that the candidate bore a special birthmark and completed a dragon-slaying quest.

“Without the Dragons we would not be united. They have given us this throne.”

The setting of Dragon Throne War is modeled after classic fantasy archetypes. In the world of Calibran, red dragons spit fire, black dragons spew acid, and it’s nigh impossible to hurt a dragon without a magic artifact. Elvish lineages include Wood, Noble and Dark Elves.

Amazons are a nation of all-female warriors, Minotaurs, who are as fierce as Spartans, live in a city without walls and build their labyrinth underground, and Barbarians adhere to the standards set by Robert Howard’s Conan The Barbarian.

While we are indebted to and influenced by the classics, we’ve managed to create a unique world bursting with epic stories, battles and characters, without always crossbreeding our own classic fantasy ideas with tropes from existing genres.

Additional details on Calibran’s races and geography will be released soon, along with campaign updates. Stay tuned!

All Dragon Throne War t-shirts are add-ons. You can add them to ANY TIER for £19 each (shipping is included), simply modifying your pledge of the corresponding amount. See all models and read the details on UPDATE 10: Dragon Throne War t-shirts now available as add-ons!

Methodically building a world from scratch is no easy feat. The stories we’ve already completed for the Dragon Throne War saga, and those which remain to be written (and possibly rewritten -- a good rule for all writers), must be revised, illustrated, laid out, printed and shipped. Moreover, we need to account for a variety of ancillary costs in order to execute everything properly. For example, we need to design maps, emblems, guidelines and additional support materials in order to create a richer, more cohesive feel for Calibran. Some reward tiers require a significant investment from our side, but your contributions will go a long way towards helping us fulfill our orders efficiently and on time.

We have a few ideas in mind for expanding the Dragon Throne War saga into something even bigger -- i.e. developing extra content for all backers.  However, we don’t want to be cocky and put the cart before the horse. If the campaign proceeds as we hope it will, our stretch goals will be progressively unveiled in future campaign updates and on this page.

The extraordinary writers and dungeon masters who have brought Dragon Throne War to life:

Anthony Russo

A heavy diet of internet culture centered around science, technology, science-fiction, fantasy, politics and world news keeps Anthony’s mind flooded with ideas and scenarios to fuel his writing. A long-time fan of Arthur C. Clarke, Orson Scott Card, Kim Stanley Robinson, Greg Bear and Tad Williams, Anthony recently published The Dragon of Unrest, which is available on Amazon and other online retailers. For Dragon Throne War, Anthony’s official role is “worldbuilder”.

Sean Newton

Writing is an addiction for which there is no 12-step program, and Sean Newton has been addicted to writing since childhood. Fortunately, he’s managed to turn his mental health issues into a paying job as a full-time copywriter. Before finding his happy place, he worked the typical assortment of weird jobs that all nascent writers seem to find their way into, from factory worker to tall ship sailor. He currently lives in the midwestern U.S. with his wife and a menagerie of animals.

Joe Appleton

Born in the UK, Joe Appleton now lives in Vietnam and works as a full-time writer. As a motorsports journalist by trade, covering the exciting world of MotoGP, Joe spends his downtime dabbling in the magical realm of fantasy fiction. His main inspirations include Neil Gaiman, Mervyn Peake, Jules Verne, and of course, J.R.R Tolkien. Joe is also a regular gamer, and has been waiting a long time for a chance to bring his own fantasy world to life. He’s ready to seize the opportunity with both hands.

Bret James Stewart

Bret James Stewart lives in the beautiful mountains of Western North Carolina, where he enjoys hiking and a host of other outdoor activities. His love affair with fantasy began at a very early age and intensified when he was introduced to fantasy role-playing games in his early teens.  As you can see by his Dragon Throne work, he’s still very active in the genre after almost 30 years’ experience.  His novel, The Dragon's Lullaby, will debut in late 2014, and he would, of course, appreciate it if you could check it out.

Alberto B.

Alberto, a fantasy enthusiast since childhood, is the driving force behind Dragon Throne War. He’s read every Dragonlance novella and Tolkien book multiple times, and is a huge Larry Elmore fan. Together with his friends, he still enjoys long sessions of Dungeons & Dragons. So yes, you could say that Alberto loves classic fantasy.

Oana Dascalu

Oana has been drawing since childhood - first on the walls of her parents apartment, and then later on more traditional mediums once she discovered paper, pencils and chalk. After graduating with a Fine Arts degree and working as a graphic designer for a few years, she decided that digital painting was a worthwhile challenge. Since then, she has consistently developed her illustration skills - particularly in the fantasy art realm, which she loves unabashedly. Oana lives in Romania and paints pictures all day. She’s also a huge animal lover with a weakness for cats.

First off, we greatly appreciate your monetary contribution -- especially if you donate early in the campaign.  But regardless of whether you donate early or late, it will take a team effort for this project to succeed. Of course, we’d like to hit the ground running, since campaigns that start strong are likely to attract more backers. However, if you’re unable to throw a few dollars our way, you can still help us reach our goal. Here’s how:

  • If you’re as excited as we are to see The Dragon Throne War books become a reality, tell your friends about this campaign. Use Twitter, Facebook, RPGs, literature and board games forums, or send your friends an email. Use it as an excuse to reconnect with people you haven’t spoken with in a while. The world is teeming with classic fantasy fans and we need your help to reach them all!

  • Convince at least one person to make a pledge. Every cent counts, and every supporter raises this project’s profile!

  • Follow Dragon Throne War on Twitter and Facebook, and subscribe to our Newsletter. Share our updates with your friends!

If you’re planning to pledge for a tier that includes physical rewards, please note that you’ll be asked to contribute to shipping costs upon delivery. If your country isn’t available on the pledge screen, please leave a comment in the “Comments” tab or send us a direct message. We’ll respond asap.

Risks and challenges

Manufacturing and shipping are the main challenges that our close-knit team faces with the Dragon Throne War saga. We have some projections regarding how many book copies will need to be printed, but we won’t know for certain until the campaign is live. Printing a small amount of books is not an insurmountable obstacle (after all, people have been printing books for a while now), but shipping them across the globe might prove more complex, depending on where our backers live. We are fully committed to doing things properly and tracking all shipments, but please note that the performance of the various postal services around the world is out of our direct control.
