A book with one knitting or sewing project and one corresponding baking recipe for each month of the year.

The Project

With years of my favorite recipes and craft tutorials saved up, the time is now to create a book that includes baking, knitting and sewing! Twelve recipes, each partnered with a knitting or sewing pattern to go with the season. One project and corresponding tasty treat each month of the year. You don’t need to be a culinary genius (or even know what culinary means!) to enjoy my recipes, and if you’ve ever used a needle and thread or pair of knitting needles, you’ll love the classic, yet creative, patterns I’ve designed for the series. This addresses a major gap in the market. There are only TWO books including these three elements on Amazon.com.

Stretch Goals

All funds raised beyond my goal will allow me to:
- Publish a second book of gender-neutral childrens' patterns inspired by the sea
- Do more to market the books, including a mini tour
- Supply free copies of the books to local libraries and schools

I already have a team of volunteers for the modeling, hair/make-up, styling, test knitting, transportation, and recipe testing. I will do the photography, layout and food styling myself.

My Skills

I have a background in publications design, communications, design, art, and food styling. In 2012, I handled the layout for Goodall's A Modern Irish Cookbook, a 50-recipe 108-page recipe book. I also styled/photographed 12 of the recipes. Two were my own creations. My blog, EvinOK.net, was chosen as one of the top six craft blogs of 2013 in Ireland.

At just seven years of age, I knew my favorite toy was my grandfather’s Underwood manual typewriter. I would clank away on it at all hours of the day and night writing short stories, recipe books, and special “snow day” magazines for my neighbors. As I grew older, I phased in newspapers, blogs and real magazines to share my words with a larger audience, but throughout it all the goal of writing, designing and publishing a book was always in my heart and never far from my thoughts.

Rewards

Every single person who backs my project will be thanked in a message, on my Facebook page and in a Tweet.  Other rewards, including tangible ones, are listed to the right. But the greatest reward is knowing you are supporting my dream and helping to publish this wonderful collection.

Risks and challenges Learn about accountability on Kickstarter

Distribution and marketing are the two main challenges.

Distribution should be managed successfully with the right printer. I will contact independent book and craft stores to make them aware of my book.

Marketing will be primarily online, with some direct mail as well. My blog will host a monthly contest to see who made it best, inviting readers of the book to submit their projects from the book for the chance to win an exclusive pattern. A small tour of mostly independent bookstores is planned for late 2014. The tour will consist of cities and towns I can get to for little cost, and places where I have friends with comfortable couches or spare beds.

FAQ

  • Yes, I did. Most of the foods in the photos I even baked or cooked myself. When I style and photograph food, I do so swiftly so it remains edible since I am against food waste. Usually, moments after the photo is snapped, I eat whatever is on the plate. If it is a batch of something, I share with friends, family, and anyone encounter (like my postman).

  • The price has not been set, but I am aiming for it to be about $20-26 for the book. It will have techniques, tips, beautiful photos, 12 baking recipes and 12 knitting/sewing projects. That averages out to be about $1 per recipe/pattern or about $2 per pattern.

  • Originally, a camera was budgeted for. I purchased it while the Kickstarter campaign was in the works, determined to have it for the project no matter the outcome. However, it was defective. The experience reminded me that new isn't always better so I will be using my existing Nikon 24MP DSLR. Instead of a dedicated camera, I may research a nice lens. The photos shown in this project were taken with my Nikon so I tend to believe it isn't just the camera that takes great photos, but the photographer, light, and what's in front of the lens.

  • I didn't. No script. I actually filmed it on my own first but Liam pulled the chair over to help me bake (he didn't notice the camera across the kitchen). So, I went with it. He really brought the right authenticity to the video and kept me from being more nervous in front of the camera.
