It is Nigh! The DFCO App Debuts on Steam & Mac Store This Halloween!

Posted by Fred Hicks / Evil Hat Productions (Creator)

Good news, folks! The DFCO app is set to debut on Steam and on the Apple Mac App Store soon (in the next few weeks). Details a bit further down the page, including release dates.

What About iOS and Android?

iOS and Android versions are still under development and should be coming out within a couple of months. (Turns out that the mobile versions have a few additional complexities that still need some implementation, testing, debugging, etc.)

The keys will work to unlock the expansions for the mobile versions once they’re released, even if you redeem the keys now, before the release.

Hidden Achievement is still evaluating pricing for the mobile versions of the app, but the release price should be in the appropriate range for those platforms.

In the meantime, for those of you with a laptop or desktop system who are itching to get some electronic play happening soonest, you'll be having a happy Halloween indeed.

A Recap: What Was Funded

Our last stretch goal for the campaign was to unlock free expansions in the app version of the game.

Due to the way some of the digital marketplaces for apps work, we couldn't put together a deal where you could get the app itself for free. You'll still need to pay for that.

But the expansions that this KS funded — Fan Favorites, Helping Hands, Wardens Attack — and the Mouse deck and variants too, you'll be able to get for free by setting up your KS backer keys with your Hidden Achievement account.

Sometime in the next few days we'll be sending those keys out to you from BackerKit. You can get your account set up in advance of getting that key, tho, so keep reading.

Setting Up Your Account for the App (Do This Now)

Here's are instructions for redeeming your key to unlock the expansions.

First, create an account on the Hidden Achievement website. You can do this part right now before your key even arrives:

  • Open your web browser and visit https://accounts-dfco.hiddenachievement.com/
  • Click the "Register" button
  • Fill in your information - pick an account name that you will use to log in (this is not a screen name, and will not ever be visible to others), enter your full name, email address, and pick a password.
  • Check the confirmation boxes.
  • Click the "Register" button at the bottom of the form.

After you register, you will receive an automated email with a code to complete your registration. Once that has arrived, click the link in the email or enter the code and then log in to your account.

At this point, we recommend you enable a form of two-factor authentication to increase your account security. You can either use an authenticator app like Google Authenticator, or enable email-based two-factor authentication.

Redeeming Your Free Expansions Key (Once It Arrives)

Once your key arrives from BackerKit (I'll be working on setting that up next!), head back to the Hidden Achievement website.

Click on the "Keys" section of your profile, enter the key in the box, and click "Redeem". You should see the key information and entitlements show up. Congratulations! You're done until you have your copy of the game.

What To Do After the App Releases

Using your account in the game to unlock expansions:

After you've launched the game, you can go to the "Network" section of the "Options" screen and log in with the account you created above. That will unlock all the expansion content.

Other Important Details

Is It Good? Level With Me, Fred!

Whoa mamma. :) I've been playing the game off & on as a playtester during development. It's a very faithful adaptation of the game for sure, and makes what's already a fast to setup/play/breakdown game into something even faster. I haven't gotten a chance to play multiplayer yet, but I know others have, and for me it's been fantastic for solitaire play and getting to spend some time with decks I don't see as often at the table. If you like it on the table, you'll definitely like it on the screen!

I'm Ready. Lay Some Sweet Visuals On Me!

Sounds like you missed the game's trailer. Which is an excellent note to end this post on. Here you go!

Raven - those keys are for cross-platform access to the expansions, so they’re redeemed on our website rather than Steam.

Full instructions are in this update, but the quick version is:

      1. Create an account at https://accounts-dfco.hiddenachievement.com/
      2. Add the keys to your account there.
      3. From the Options menu in the game, go to the Network tab and log in to the account you created above.

The app itself was never going to be offered free on any platform. If folks review the text from the stretch goal announcement in May 2016, it was made clear then: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/evilhat/the-dresden-files-cooperative-card-game/posts/1574576

What the stretch goal unlocked was free expansions in the app.

That game is in need of some serious tutorial, and some amenities like an undo button.
Also maybe not have that single button be labeled in Cyrillic?

Those keys-emails went out to the BackerKit email address of record for all of our backers within a few days of when this update went out.

Two paths to get access to them: 1) Log into https://the-dresden-files-cooperative-card-game.backerkit.com/ and check for your available digital downloads, the codes are there; 2) Contact us here on Kickstarter via private message (not public comment) if you're having trouble accessing BackerKit.

Nothing saying you have to buy it now rather than wait for the (certainly due to be lower) mobile pricepoint, Chris. Otherwise, let the market do its work.

    12. Chris Drain on

@Fred I'm speaking as someone that works at a games company as a developer and a project manager and I have done for a number of years. I totally agree we have to make a living. But it's a highly competitive market with some really amazing titles at that price point.

    13. Hidden Achievement on

Robert - definitely send us email at support@hiddenachievement.com about the language issue. It should be entirely in English, unless the confusion is over the “table talk” tab when viewing a character’s details - in which case that’s not in any language (and you’re not the only one who found it confusing).

We do have a system for saving games, but it hasn’t been thoroughly tested yet since we had viewed that as primarily a feature for mobile (where it automatically saves when the game goes into the background). Once we’re sure it’s working well, we’ll include it in an update for the desktop version too.

Registered as instructed at https://accounts-dfco.hiddenachievement.com/, and trying to log back in but can't. I hit forgot my password, it emails me a code and prompts me to reset my password. All good until I hit submit for the new password, then it asks for an additional code from my authenticator app (which I did not setup) or email but no additional code was provided so I am stuck unable to login. How can I get help with this?

      Thanks in advance!
      Michael

Bought the game on Steam, even though I have the game set to English the buttons for when you look at players cards is in a different language, when you do report a bug, it takes a bug log and doesn't allow you to actually say what the bug is, and there is no way to save a game in progress, can only resign a game. I often don't have time to play a complete game, otherwise I would just use the board game. Already asking for a steam refund already after only 12 minutes played and that is including the time it took me to set up my account.

    17. Austin Eschweiler on

      $20? For a digital card game...unacceptable guys...

    18. Fred Hicks / Evil Hat Productions 14-time creator
      Superbacker
      on

Can't agree that it's grossly overpriced for the platform. Yes, Sentinels of the Multiverse is priced at $10, but that's been out a good long while, and has given Handelabra Games a chance to get nicely funded off its sales.

Not to mention I have a hard time looking at claims that $20 overpriced for a game that in physical form is $40, especially when the code you're getting means you're getting $70 worth of game in digital form for $20 that you can play on a nice, big, non-mobile-device screen.

Folks who make games need to be able to make a living.

    19. Chris Drain on

I don't know who was providing advise or decided on the Steam pricing but $20 US is grossly over priced for what looks to be a direct copy of the tabletop version. Based on my experience I predict you'll get a handful of positive reviews from hardcore fans then a lot of negative reviews based on price vs simplicity, longevity and gameplay. If you are lucky it will hold to a "mixed" opinion rating.

I might get it on mobile for $5, though that would be a stretch given the plethora of other options available. There is no way I'll buy it on PC for 4x that amount.

    20. Scott Everts
      Superbacker

That's similar to how Pathfinder Adventures works and a nice feature for those that want to play on various platforms. Hopefully there will be a plan when the servers are eventually shut down to tag expansions locally. Thanks for clarifying and looking forward to playing it next week.

    21. Hidden Achievement on

Fred is correct that the separate account was the best option for unlocking content in a way that works across multiple platforms. Steam is one of the only platforms that provides a means of giving out keys to unlock expansion content without some form of external service.

    22. Fred Hicks / Evil Hat Productions 14-time creator
      Superbacker
      on

@esotericist Hidden Achievement can correct me if I'm wrong here, but setting up that account makes sure that a) an unlock of the expansions on one platform is an unlock of the expansions across all other platforms, for folks who decide to (for example: me) play on their Mac or PC and their iOS devices, etc. I *think* it may also play into cross-platform multiplayer in ways that aren't yet clear to me.

    23. Hidden Achievement on

@Dustin_00 - send us some email if you're still having problems. We have seen a couple of issues with emails being dropped on the way out of the Amazon email service, and we can send you the verification code you need through another channel.

I understand your hesitation esotericist. I'm not a big fan of creating accounts unless absolutely necessary since its just one more risk of hacked data getting out. I did create the account so I could get the additional content but I would have preferred Steam keys instead. This guarantees the content will always be tied to my Steam account instead of relying on access to a 3rd party site for activation.
But its nice to have the free extra content and I'm glad to have a digital version to play solo so if that's how it will work, I guess that's what we have to do.

    25. esotericist on

Fred, I think you misunderstand. I am not complaining about the base app not being free; I understand the vagaries of the digital app market (especially where it might connect to mobile markets) makes certain things difficult. I get that.

I like the idea of the app, I was willing to pay for the base version as was always understood would be the case, but I'm not willing to make an unnecessary account in order to receive the benefits, and if I'm not going to have all of what I expected to receive, I decided that paying for the base version was no longer worth it to me.

Given the information previously available prior to this post, I would have expected steam keys to be available for a steam product; that's how that specific market works, and that's what I consider the proper way to manage content for the platform. If there was any reason for me to believe at this point in time I would be receiving steam keys, I wouldn't have had any complaint.

This is the core of my issue: in order to receive a benefit on steam I need to make a non-steam account. This is to me is a very distasteful pattern I have been noticing becoming more common recently, and I wanted to make sure it was known that this can impact some consumers' willingness to engage with it.

@Dawn Earp - It looks like that's a missing string in the website localization table. That entry should read "Kickstarter Backer" so we can support any additional bonuses we might want to give out like special forum access for backers.

    28. Fred Hicks / Evil Hat Productions 14-time creator
      Superbacker

As we noted well over a year ago when we announced the stretch goal, due to the variances in various online marketplaces — and in the interests of Hidden Achievement recovering their expenses (and, gods forbid! Make any money from the effort to go towards living wages) beyond the starter budget we funded here — the base app itself can't be made free.

This is very, very old news as far as this Kickstarter is concerned.

As detailed then, the stretch goal was only to unlock free access to all the expansions in the app, on every platform where you might see fit to acquire it.

That's what this post is about: setting up the codes for that.

I'm not sure what value you felt you were actually adding here, esotericist. Nobody's forcing you to buy the app version game or play online. You already got the physical game, so you're already able to play it in the primary intended form.

    29. Missing avatar

      Dawn Earp on

So, I'm unclear. In my Hidden Achievements site, the code says that I was awarded the base game. But from what I see here, I still have to buy the base game on Steam? Is that accurate?

    30. esotericist on

Congratulations to the Hidden Achievement for getting together what looks like a polished project, and congratulations to Evil Hat for continuing to be awesome for their part in making it happen (oh, and the actual physical product I've got on my table as we speak).

With that out of the way: I will not be enjoying the app. I refuse to continue to make account after account after account with everybody and their brother's dog just to receive benefits on a platform for which I already have an account.

I regret the need to be negative, and I'm glad other people are able to benefit from this, but I simply can't keep dealing with this sort of thing. If it's a steam release, give us what steam keys you can or cannot give. I am not chasing down additional accounts even for what adds up to half-off pricing for all of the content available. And given that, I can't justify paying for the base game itself, either.

Another question, will Steam show the DLC on my purchase list for the game? Or is this only work if you log in to your own site? I'd prefer to unlock them on Steam so if the game website is down or permanently disabled the DLC will still be active. A better way to do this is to send us a Steam code for each DLC so we can activate them ourselves and bypass the requirement to create an account elsewhere.

However, we’ll almost certainly have a release discount on the mobile version like we have with the Steam/Mac versions, and we can make sure backers are notified in advance to take advantage of that."
