Fate Dice & Fate Points BackerKit Launches This Week: Here's What You Need To Do & Know

Posted by Fred Hicks / Evil Hat Productions (Creator)

Early this week we'll be launching the Fate Accessories backerkit! The shinies, they come soon!

Everyone who's expecting a shipment must make use of it in order to make that shipment happen, and we'll be shipping really soon (in just a couple more weeks, if the timing works out), so don't skip this update. Read it all, then keep an eye out for your email invite (Monday or Tuesday latest).

To the folks who've used BackerKit with other campaigns before: the BackerKit will launch early this week, starting with a smoke test (5% of backers get invites to help kick the tires) and followed not long after by a full rollout. Even if you're not selecting add-ons, you'll need to pay for shipping, so get on over there soon as you get the invite.

To everyone else: The rest of this post is here to help you. Lots of words, yes, but I'm trying to head off questions at the pass here, so make sure to read all of them! I'll try to keep each part as brief as possible.

To both groups: Make sure to respond to your invite this week if at all possible, as we're on a tight timeframe between launch and our intended ship zone of early-to-mid October.

What is BackerKit? Do I need to use it?

BackerKit is a pledge manager. It's a separate website that you'll use to fill out survey questions, provide address data for shipment, and pay for the shipment (as explained at campaign launch).

If you selected "No Reward", but now want to get some dice or points, BackerKit will also enable you to upgrade your pledge to a shipping one. Remember, we're only shipping to USA-based addresses.

We've also set up this BackerKit so that you explicitly select your rewards. While everyone will automatically get four Ghost Dice added to their shipment as promised, we don't know which dice sets you want because, hey, no telepathy, so this will also be your opportunity to configure how you intend to spend your pledged dollars.

BackerKit will also give folks a chance to add other items from our catalog to their order. The shipping price is $5 regardless of what you add, and won't increase. (We'll pick up the difference.)

Because everyone needs to provide their shipping address information, and to pay for shipping, and to configure their reward, pretty much everyone needs to complete the BackerKit process once they receive their invite email.

How do I get access to BackerKit?

You'll be getting an invite email at the email address you use on your Kickstarter account. (If that's not your primary email address/inbox, make sure to take the time to check this one.)

If that invite email doesn't show up for whatever reason (some email services can be a little too aggressive with their "spam" catching), you should be able to get another email attempt sent in at once we've gone live.

I missed the campaign, can I still preorder?

Yes, just go here:

How do I configure my pledged rewards? How do I add on other items?

After you log in to BackerKit, you'll be asked a few questions (the survey part). Once you've gotten past that part, you'll be presented with something that looks like a store. Here, you can use your pledge credit to select the items you want. And, you can add other things from our catalog as well. It'll go in your cart, which explains itself on the right-hand side of the page as you add items.

How do I provide my shipping information?

Once you click past the add-ons section, you'll be presented with an opportunity to enter your shipping information (if your reward tier needs shipping information). Make sure to click all the way through and confirm the results.

If you haven't clicked a button that reads Place My Order then the process is not done and you won't be recorded as a completed response. Only completed responses will get their shipments. So make sure to follow the process through to its confirmed conclusion!

I'm going to move during October...

Bad time for us to be shipping you anything, then. Once your new address stabilizes, respond to the BackerKit then. Alternatively, look at having your shipment go to your work address, or a family member or friend who won't be moving during that timeframe.

I don't see an item I wanted to include, can it be added?

Please reach out to us by email at and we'll see if we can accommodate you, assuming we expect to have it in stock at time of shipment.

My kickstarter pledge failed, can I correct it using BackerKit?

You should be able to — but if Kickstarter removed you in a way that BackerKit wasn't able to spot, we'll need to manually add you back into the backer list. Contact us at and we'll work with you to get it sorted out.

I have another question not covered here!

We have failed! Oh noes! But you should tell us. We like answering questions. is the way to go, tho you can also contact us via direct message here on the Kickstarter website.

You can ask your question here in the comments, too, tho if it is your-order-specific, comments aren't the best venue for something that might require us to do a lot of back and forth, ask for private details like your shipping address, etc. Hence the recommendation to use direct message or email!

That's it for now — thanks as always for your support, and keep an eye on your kickstarter email address's inbox for those invites.

Ah, thank you for clearing that up, Fred!

er, $5 shipping charge billed-in-backerkit — sure Fred, leave out the important descriptor!

      Nothing went awry:

      $15 for a dice pack
+$5 billed-in-backerkit (as noted in the tier description and campaign page)

So that's $20 in expenses. Right now you've got $15 in credit, minus $5 for that shipping. When you add $15 dice pack to that, you'll be at the "I better pay my $5 shipping charge" step.

    4. Stephanie Bryant

Hey, I backed at the $15 the pack level, but only see $10 credit? I think something went awry with the ghost dice freebie?

You're under no obligation to use BK if you don't want anything shipped to you at a USA address.

PDFs will be set up on the 'kit sometime in the next few weeks, time permitting.

If I don't want anything, should I just ignore BackerKit? I chose the 'Accessories a la Carte' tier, but at this point I don't really want a thing (I'm not in the US and I don't think it's worth the hassle to have dice forwarded to me somehow). However, I have 4 free dice and I've been asked to provide a shipping address, so I just stopped at that point.

I see various printed books. Will they be accompanied by their PDFs?
