Final Shipping Preparation Begins

Fate Corps! The end is nigh!

The books are all at the shipping warehouse, and our shipping service is beginning their work. This means that over the course of the next three weeks, all the remaining Fate Core shipments should go out, including those with Fate System Toolkit, Fate Worlds: Worlds on Fire, Fate Worlds: Worlds in Shadow, Strange Tales of the Century, and Sally Slick and the Steel Syndicate.

If that's all you care about, great! Keep an eye out over the course of the next month-or-so for your stuff. What follows is some extra transparency and digging into the details, for those of you who like that sort of thing. :)

First up has been working through the data and making sure all the addresses make sense. (We found a couple where folks had put their street address as their name—easily corrected.) This is already done!

The next has been expense assessment and sign-off, which we've just concluded. With international shipping rates going insane like they are, the shipper is making sure to check with us on various package weight costs to get our sign-off.

We've got 1,801 domestic shipments that'll be going out in this round. These will be sent via Media Mail. At a guess, these might run us over $10,000 in total, even with media mail's low rates!

Then there are 821 international shipments. The killer division here is between things we can send out First Class Parcel International (FCI), and things which must be Priority Mail International. If a package goes over 4 pounds we're looking at Priority. Most packages with 3 or fewer books should be eligible for FCI, depending on the books (Strange Tales is a beast, and hardcovers weigh more than equivalent softcovers).

First Class can get us as low as about $18 for Canada, and somewhere in the $20s for everywhere else, topping out with Australia's $26-and-change. FCI is the only method that lands close to the $15 we charged international backers for one shipment. Thankfully we have plenty of margin on the books themselves that we can use to soak the overages!

Priority Mail is a bit of a jump. At 4 pounds, Canada is nearly $30, and Australia is over $40. At 6 pounds — the projected weight of about 200 of the international shipments — Canada is over $40 and Australia is over $60. So for those 200 folks we're expecting to pay more to ship than we're expecting to pay to ship to our 1800 domestic folks.

Then there's still the 600-or-so internationals on top of that with a mix of under and over 4 pound shipments.

It's going to be a big bill! We won't be surprised to see it go over $40,000 in all, if not well over that mark. But we've known that it's due to be a big bill for the past year. We can hack it!

After replacing a number of damaged copies in the first round shipping, we won't be cutting corners on this ship-out. Honestly, even if we could, it just plain doesn't make sense: with the first round of shipping we were able to use a lot of "one size fits all" packaging because there just wasn't as much variety in the contents. In this second shipping round, tho, we're looking at up to seven different titles in various combinations in the packages going out.

That variety is going to slow down the pack-out effort (the shippers can't just pack up a few thousand standard-issue Fate Core boxes and call it a day), and it utterly detonates any notion of a one-size-fits-all packaging. So we're letting the shippers use the various box sizes they have, which should mean a lot of extra room for damage-preventing packaging material. Apologies to those of you who hate packing peanuts: the shipper loves to use them!

So that's where things stand. If things progress like they did last time, half of you will have your packages already by the time we get around to emailing out tracking numbers, but we will send those out once we get them... it's just usually in the "post-shipping data phase" that we get them, well after many shipments have gone out. :)

We're super excited to be wrapping up the "second wave" of this Kickstarter, and the final physical-stuff-shipping portion of the campaign, well before the end of the year! Now begins the longer and slower "third wave" as we continue to develop and plan Young Centurions, Do: Fate of the Flying Temple, Shadow of the Century, and starting in 2014, Dresden Files Accelerated. We're also working on other Fate games that were not a part of this Kickstarter: the Atomic Robo RPG (coming early next year) and the War of Ashes RPG.

2013 was the most exciting year for Fate ever due to your help, and 2014 is looking just as good. Thanks everyone for making it possible!

Reporting in. Received my shipment on Friday. I must say they are a sharp-looking set of books. :-)

    2. Creator Gary Rabinovich on October 27, 2013

Has anyone in or near AZ received their books yet?

    3. Creator Fred Hicks / Evil Hat Productions on October 25, 2013

The ship-out effort may run all the way through to November 8th, but we're hoping to wrap it up several days prior to that.

    4. Creator Matthew Mather on October 25, 2013

I got my books a couple days ago. Very nice!

    5. Creator Fred Hicks / Evil Hat Productions on October 17, 2013

Yep. Think of it as a quartet of titles (Fate Core, Fate Accelerated, Fate Worlds, Fate System Toolkit) that happens to contain five books. :)

    6. Creator Joseph Le May on October 17, 2013

Hey Fred, I may have asked you this, but does the Quartet include both of the Worlds books? I *think* you may have said it needed to be split into two books due to stretch goals and so everyone getting Worlds was going to get both volumes, but I wanted to double-check before it shipped.

    7. Creator Jackson Starky on October 17, 2013

Thanks for the update, Fred! Looking forward to seeing what's coming up next from Evil Hat!

    8. Creator Blue Tyson on October 17, 2013

Yes, did some PWYW payments to help with the shipping there. You are right about Strange Tales Beastliness. Too big for Lulu Spiral Binding! :)

Joe, I am now wondering why I don't have a plushie owl! I do have a gorilla, though... ;-) He's been bugging me about when all these gorilla hijinks arive!

If anyone has overage they don't want us putting towards defraying the monumental shipping costs of the project (which all told are going to tally probably over $100,000), drop us a private message and we'll convert that overage into a gift certificate you can use at

      Some background:

At the time we were collecting payments from folks we expected that all of our books would potentially be done at different times. As it happens we were able to compress a few timeframes to make it possible to ship them all at once. This was a potentiality from the beginning; the additional split-shipment payments were intended as a kind of insurance plan for the impatient.

The reality is practically no one has paid us an amount for shipping that is actually equal to the cost of shipping to them, but that's neither here nor there.

We also can't automatically refund anyone for overpayments that don't get used: plenty of folks chose to overpay in order to help us reach the final stretch goals, or simply because they were happy to be getting over a hundred bucks of PDFs for $10 (or $0 in the case of anybody getting a physical item in addition to all the digital rewards). That's not a "detectable" intention! :)

    11. Creator Evan Gross on October 17, 2013

Why did you collect an extra $5 from me just do ship everything in one package. I paid specifically to have my order split. I have yet do have anything from. This specific kickstarter delivered to me yet.

    12. Creator Gary Rabinovich on October 17, 2013

      I can't wait.

    13. Creator Cole on October 17, 2013

Where is the best place for me to go for updates on War of Ashes as it develops?

    14. Creator Paul Cooper on October 17, 2013

I paid an additional $5 to get everything in 3 shipments. Now, everything is coming out in only 2 shipments. While that's a good thing, what about the extra $5 I sent?

    15. Creator Joe on October 17, 2013

Excellent! (Gets pillow, blanket, and plushie owl; goes to camp out by the mailbox.)

    16. Creator Jayna Pavlin on October 17, 2013

looking forward to it; good job on all this!

    17. Creator Kurt McMahon on October 17, 2013

RevBob, that's a very good idea, and one that I confess had never even occurred to me. Next time I get some packing peanuts, I will definitely give that a try!

    18. Creator Fred Hicks / Evil Hat Productions on October 17, 2013

A month ago! has 'em up for preorder, and that preorder is going to "unlock" and ship right on the tail end of the KS shipments.

    19. Creator Frank Chaustowich on October 17, 2013

Hey, I apologize if this has been answered (I did a probably not-so-complete scan of previous posts), but for those of us who didn't add on some of the print books (in my case the two Worlds books) when will they be available for general order? Now seeing the PDFs I admit they look much cooler than I expected. :-D

    20. Creator RevBob on October 17, 2013

      Public service announcement:

If you hate packing peanuts as much as I do, do the responsible thing: stop by your local UPS Store (or other shipping facility) and pass them along. That keeps them out of landfills and in circulation, which is good for everybody. Plus, if that shipper gets to know you as a regular peanut provider, they may return the favor on the odd occasion when YOU need to ship something.

    21. Creator Gaston Keller on October 17, 2013

Congrats to you and the team! You've done an awesome job! ;-)

    22. Creator Kineticmedic on October 17, 2013

      Bring on the Robo!!!!

    23. Creator Sleet on October 17, 2013

Thanks for the transparency, it's great to see this kind of background stuff and it really puts that international shipping into perspective.

    24. Creator Steve Russell on October 17, 2013

Thanks for being so transparent on shipping Fred.

    25. Creator Kaarchin on October 17, 2013

I probably am one of those 200 heavy international backer.
It's your fault! Everything looked so good that i had to get everything.
      Good luck.
