Characters live at the core of Fate! Fate Core is the latest edition of Evil Hat Productions' popular Fate roleplaying game system.
10,103 backers pledged $433,365 to help bring this project to life.

Ragnarok Arrives!

We're over halfway to our Young Centurions goal! That means it's time for us to reveal the next goal at $285,000: the Fate system adaptation of The Day After Ragnarok, exploding at you like gigaton-class mindbomb from Kenneth Hite and Leonard Balsera!

This is post-apocalyptic pulp like no other! Mighty-thewed barbarians and grim mercenaries roam the desolate plains of Ohio. Giant snakes, and those who worship them, prowl the ruins of St. Louis. Pirates battle Japanese invaders in the South China Sea. Bold British agents, equipped with experimental ophi-tech, thwart the insidious infiltration of Stalin's humanzees. Sky-raiders strike from hidden bases in the Sahara, deros skulk in South American caverns, and the Texas Rangers fight electrical death worms to save Los Alamos.

Kenneth Hite presents a world of savage swords and rocket men, of were-serpents and war-apes, from Australia's battered Empire to the proud city-state of Chicago. And across it all lies the trillion-ton corpse of the Midgard Serpent, killed by atomic fire but still poisoning the Earth with every passing night. Welcome to the world at the end of the world!

With this Fate Core translation, you'll be able to use The Day After Ragnarok as an alternate timeline-gone-wrong backstory for your Shadow of the Century game! The Fate Core Edition of The Day After Ragnarok will include the tale of how the Century Club went down fighting the Midgard Serpent. Learn how Jet Black flew the atomic bomb into the Serpent's mouth to end the fight, and read the sad and tragic tale of Sally Slick, the sole survivor of the battle who now wanders the wastelands of America, keeping the spirit of the century alive for just one more day.

Thanks to our partnership with Atomic Overmind Press we'll bring you this stretch goal once we reach $285,000. Backers at the EXPANSIONS level and higher will be able to receive the Fate Core Edition of the Day After Ragnarok in PDF form for an upgrade cost of absolutely nothing. So let's bring on the apocalypse, folks!

Oh me of little faith! Doing the happy dance now.

Have already told my FLGS to tell the distributor we want this, and the other Fate books, so making them aware well in advance there will be demand.

    2. Creator Jan Stals on January 17, 2013

And thank you Atomic Overmind Press ;-)

    3. Creator Noe Ridgway on January 16, 2013

Thank you Mr. Hicks, and thank you Tomi Sarkkinen :)

    4. Creator Hal Mangold / Atomic Overmind Press on January 16, 2013

Tomi posted the FAQ, and that says it all. :)

We need to see how long it ends up being and so on for pricing, of course. But there WILL be hardcopy available.

    5. Creator Tomi Sarkkinen on January 16, 2013

On the Atomic Overmind page there is FAQ that mentions:

"We realize that fans may have some questions about this new development for The Day After Ragnarok, so I’ll try to head a few of those off at the pass.

Does this mean that The Day After Ragnarok material is going to be only made for Fate now?

Absolutely not. The Fate Edition of DAR will be a stand alone product. We’ll still be supporting the Savage Worlds and HERO System versions fully.

Will the Fate Edition be available in printed form as well as PDF?

Absolutely. A print version will be available for purchase.

Who will be writing the Fate System adaptation material?

We’re proud to say that’ll be Mr. Fate System himself, Leonard Balsera.

When will the Fate Edition of The Day After Ragnarok be available?

Hard to say exactly, but mid-Summer 2013 is as good a guess as we can make at this point.

Will the Fate Edition get in the way of new DAR material being produced?

Absolutely not. With a fan base that’ll hopefully be getting even broader, this actually should be a help, not a hindrance to producing new DAR material. In fact, look for an update soon about things on the horizon for DAR."

    6. Creator Fred Hicks / Evil Hat Productions on January 16, 2013

Absolutely no physical books through the KS (as has been true of every "big" stretch goal once we transitioned to those ones). I'll ask Atomic Overmind to comment on whether there'll be a physical manifestation of the book; it would be sold through them, not us.

    7. Creator Noe Ridgway on January 16, 2013

I see a mention of a free pdf (yay!), but I prefer hardcopy. Are there plans to release this in physical book form? If so, will it be available through KS, and how much will it cost?

    8. Creator Stacie Winters on January 15, 2013

All I can say is you guys are the master's of using kickstarter and knowing how to keep it pumping with excitement. :)

    9. Creator John "johnkzin" Rudd on January 15, 2013

I have the SW version of "Day After Ragnarok". It'll be interesting to see it worked up for FATE.

I mentioned on the FB post that matches this announcement that I'd also love to see some other indie settings make it to FATE:

      1) Sorcery and Superscience -- a science-fantasy post-apocalyptic world. The standard edition of this setting is systemless.

      2) Rocketship Empires 1936 -- you could almost call this "Spirit of the Century ... in Spaaaaace". Pre-WWII Pulp Action Heroics with elements of settings like Barsoom and Space:1889. Unfortunately, the author is MIA. He didn't even finish the full product line before going missing. Systemless.

      3) Afterpeak -- After the peak production of oil, society evolves into a Post-Modern Fantasy setting. Also systemless.

      4) Hellas -- Greek Hoplites ... in Space.

      5) Bard Games "Atlantis" series/setting. It's not systemless, but it had a vaguely 1e AD&D/Paladium type game associated with it. But a lot of it (like the Atlas of the Atlantean world) could be used without those rules.

    10. Creator David Leaman on January 15, 2013

@Robert: I am a little blown away by the rich array of settings and scenarios being produced with this project. It was evident from the beginning that FC would make it easier to write such expansions for Fate, but the amount of stuff available *immediately* is kinda staggering.

    11. Creator Lisa Padol on January 15, 2013

Doing the Dance of Joy. (Warning: Reading DAR while reading something in a similar genre, like Mira Grant's Feed, means your brain will mix the setting elements so you have zombies spitting Midgard serpent poison.)

    12. Creator Robert Hanz on January 15, 2013

@Gary: Oh, to be sure, I absolutely meant that as a positive thing. GURPS was my go-to system for a while, simply because of its flexibility (so long as you bought into certain core assumptions). The vast variety of settings for Fate Core even so far is a huge testament to the elegance of the system.

    13. Creator Jacob Wood on January 15, 2013

Sweet, I absolutely LOVE the Day After Ragnarok setting. $285k here we come!

    14. Creator Fred Hicks / Evil Hat Productions on January 15, 2013

The first priority will be to serve the DAR setting. Will that be importable to other apocalypses? Probably -- Fate lends itself to hacking. Plus you'll also have the post-apocalyptic BURN SHIFT from Sarah Newton to play with. Much fruit to be picked.

    15. Creator Gary Forbis on January 15, 2013

@Robert: That is absolutely my hope.

    16. Creator David Leaman on January 15, 2013

@José: spread the word. Works just like increasing your pledge, but much more pocketbook-friendly!

@Fred: this sounds like a ton of fun. Is there word yet on whether this material will be flexible enough to adapt to other flavours of apocalypse? (zombie plague! grey goo! Disney buyout!) Or will the various elements be more tightly tied to this specific setting?

    17. Creator Robert Hanz on January 15, 2013

Wow. Fate Core is quickly becoming the 90s-era GURPS of narrative games.

    18. Creator Fred Hicks / Evil Hat Productions on January 15, 2013

We have every reason to expect it's a "requires Fate Core to play" thing. But there's nothing else I think you'll need *besides* Fate Core.

    19. Creator Antoni Ten on January 15, 2013

Obligatory question, this will be standalone or will it require an additional purchase like the Freeport one? I have come to realize that I will love it no matter what, but I need to plan my budget

    20. Creator John Taber on January 15, 2013

Rockin'! Love me the Ragnarok. Great news! :) Hope this level gets funded!!! :D

    21. Creator KFC on January 15, 2013

OMG OMG OMFG! I love you GUYS!

    22. Creator Fred Hicks / Evil Hat Productions on January 15, 2013

Took a while to put together, but, yeah, spreadsheeeeeeet!

    23. Creator Ralph Mazza on January 15, 2013

The spread sheet is the genius. More of the exlody stretch goal Kickstarters should do that.

    24. Creator Stacey Chancellor on January 15, 2013

I don' t know how much more of this I can take. :) With each new goal, there is something else more amazing than the last. It is kind of exhausting, but in the best kind of way.

    25. Creator Fred Hicks / Evil Hat Productions on January 15, 2013

You don't have to, man. :)

    26. Creator José Luis Porfírio on January 15, 2013

Guys, I love you, but I really, really, really can't give any more... :(

    27. Creator Fred Hicks / Evil Hat Productions on January 15, 2013

Our trending for that to happen is pretty good, Neil. :)

    28. Creator Neil Ford on January 15, 2013

Why oh why couldn't this have been an earlier stretch goal! I'm just going to have to keep everything crossed it gets funded.

    29. Creator Jacob Williamson on January 15, 2013

Oh heck. I was all set to sit back on my current pledge and let this one run its course. Kenneth Hite is at least a demigod. I'll chip in a little extra for some of that!

    30. Creator Jeff Scifert on January 15, 2013

YES! I have the Savage Worlds version and love it. Cannot wait to see it done in FATE :)

    31. Creator Jan Stals on January 15, 2013

Were-serpents, war-apes?! What more do you need?

    32. Creator Gary Arkham on January 15, 2013

      This is GREAT!!!!

    33. Creator Michael Bolam on January 15, 2013

      So much "awesome" presented here.
