Play Out Loud

Seasons greetings, Fate Corps!

With the holiday week coming up, we're likely to be incommunicado through next week. And as you might expect, we figure the Kickstarter campaign's momentum may slow a bit through the holiday zone.

But there's something you can do as a backer to keep us rolling along: share your voice.

Many of you have already done this. You've blogged, tweeted, facebooked, G+'d, posted, video'd, and so forth about your experiences reading and playing Fate Core. That is where the momentum that we've seen is coming from. And at nearly 4,600 strong, y'all have a lot of voices, many of which are yet to be heard. So let's hear them!

We're not big fans of Non-Disclosure Agreements at Evil Hat. They encourage the people most qualified to talk -- often positively -- about the game being "protected" by the NDA. With them in place, folks who haven't been exposed to the game often speculate, sometimes negatively, and nobody with the actual direct experience is allowed to step up and speak out. To us, that just seems like it's squandering the best asset any game has -- its true fans and alpha adopters.

So at Evil Hat, we prefer, instead, a Disclosure Pledge. Folks who read and sign it are saying that, yes, they not only will read and play the game and report on it to us -- they'll talk to the world at large, let them know what's already great, and celebrate that the warts that exist are being found and removed. While we still ask that folks don't share the text itself, we prefer to treat those who have access to it with trust, rather than asking them to make a big legally binding promise to not just keep the text to themselves, but any conversation about it whatsoever.

Once the Pledge is established, instead of there just being a few voices from "on high" from the company speaking with authority, suddenly, we get an army of peers, collaborators, and friends all doing that. And that's the best of all possible worlds, for us.

Are you willing to join that army, and take up the Disclosure Pledge as this campaign continues? We hope you are. And with that in mind, here's the pledge.

Disclosure Pledge

I recognize my value as a voice to the public about this game.

Therefore, I will talk about my reading and playtest experiences, in public, whether it’s on my blog, my podcast, the forums I frequent, or with the people I meet and game with.

I recognize my value as a grass-roots word-of-mouth sales-force for this product.

Therefore, when I speak publicly about my playtesting experiences, I will do so mindfully, recognizing that what the public does with what I share may not always be what I intend.

I understand this does not mean I should speak with artificial enthusiasm or acclaim, but I should share my enthusiasm and enjoyments when they happen. When encountering speed bumps and failures along the way, I will speak fairly, and try to preface my comments with the explicit mention that this is an early playtest and some problems are to be expected. I am responsible for what I say, but I am not an “internet cop”, here—others may say what they say. Whenever possible, I will share my “off-list” discussions (actual play reports, thoughts as I read the materials, etc) with Evil Hat Productions so they might keep tabs on them.

I recognize the value of keeping the game texts I read private.

Therefore, I will not share those texts, in whole or in excerpted part, with anyone not authorized by Evil Hat Productions. I understand that any such authorization must come directly from a member of Evil Hat Productions and must be explicit and written*.

I also understand that if I think that sharing an excerpt of the text would enhance my public voice or the grass-roots sales-force effort, I will contact Evil Hat Productions and discuss what I’d like to do!

*Explicit and Written Approval to Share

As some of you may have already seen us say, we are entirely fine with you sharing the draft with your play-group for play and testing purposes. Naturally! You need to do that kind of sharing in order to do that kind of playing. So do it! You have our blessing. And if you happen to encourage a few of them to back at the $1 level while you're at it... great! :)

Regardless of whether you read, play, and talk about Fate Core over the next week, we hope you all travel safe and stay cozy, wherever you are. Thank you so much for getting us so far already, and we think you'll be excited to see what we have in store for you when we return.

Onward!

We encourage people to disclose. It's the opposite of an NDA.

    2. Carol Darnell on January 21, 2013

My apologies; I phrased that wrong. Though I would have loved to actually interview you, we've been on hiatus, and I've been sick in week-long stretches on and off, so I just wanted to see if I could simply share my opinions on what I've read so far, and my observations on the G+ group, I would like to do so, provided that doesn't break any disclosure agreements.

I am super hard to schedule for podcasting in January if the invite wasn't extended until January. One week's not enough lead time for me, especially with our rapid approach to the end of the campaign...

    4. Carol Darnell on January 21, 2013

Signed. Although I would like to talk to you about discussing what I've read and seen not just in the text, but in the larger phenomenon of the Kickstarter and the participation in the G+ group as well, on our next podcast (set to record 1/29).

And, Signed! Great idea, which doesn't surprise me, considering the source.

    7. Karine Charlebois on December 27, 2012

Signed: my game starts in January, where some PCs will be stone by day, warriors by night.

      Signed,

You got some smart cookies over there at Evil Hat.

      Much Love,

      Ryan

P.S. I am very excited to begin a sea adventure with my group come late January using this setting!

      What a fantastic idea.
      Signed.

      "So Say We All!".

    13. Scott Acker on December 22, 2012

Signed quite a while ago. Sorry I've been so busy lately. Hopefully the new year will bring me a bit more time. ;)

      Signed.
Play testing with my group starts early January (Christmas got in the way)

    15. Alexander R. Corbett on December 22, 2012

Signed. I'm trying to post on my blog every Friday with ideas, builds, and minor hacks for Fate Core, and I've encouraged all my (currently non-existent) readers to go pledge.

Hopefully I'll get around to running that Final Fantasy FATE char-gen soon. It'll be a worthy challenge, and my players are champing at the bit to unleash their creativity.

    16. Scott Bonner on December 21, 2012

Signed. I don't know how much playtest experience I will get, since my gaming group meets infrequently and has a set game already, but I will share what I can.

    17. John C. Faludi on December 21, 2012

Color me signed. I've been excited to share my positive experiences with the FATE system with my friends and will continue to do so!

    18. kustenjaeger on December 21, 2012

This pledge is a really good idea. I'm going to see if I can run a game over Christmas and post the results.

      Regards

      Edward

Signatures are optional (and "Signed!" is enough). Follow-through and mindset are the real intended products of the Pledge. :)

    21. Yohann Delalande on December 21, 2012

If I say: "Signed!" will you consider I've signed the Disclosure Pledge or do you actually need us to send you a form? If it's the former, then

      Signed!

If it's the latter, could you link us to the document please?

Considering writing on Shadow won't start until we're some ways into 2013... you may have to wait a bit. :)

    23. Reverend Dak on December 21, 2012

Consider it signed by The (dis)Honorable Reverend Dak.

Oh, how can I get a hand on the Shadow Of The Century play-test materials. I want it, need it, bleed for it...and will talk out loud about it when appropriate. I currently publish Crawl! a fanzine for DCC RPG, and was considering a zine/setting called The New Wave - 80's Pulp Action Adventure Setting for Fate (and likely still will!)

      So stoked!

    24. Shotofentropy on December 21, 2012

Martin, same here but with pre-adult genetically altered historical Japanese assassin amphibians.

Fred, as a signatory of the disclosure pledge, I must ask you permission, in the name of my playgroup and of the Spanish Fate Core Google+ community, to start translating the character sheet. I know that Evil Had is in the background, working to create licensed translations of the book, but at least for my playgroup, I am going to need to create translated character sheets, and sharing them with the world at last would be the something I would like.
