(long slow clap)
I can't wait.
Literally, I can't wait. I'm already building my character. :)
This is amazing news - frankly, I had given up hope that this was ever going to see the light of day. Thanks so much for proving me wrong!
In related news, I think I've found the perfect test for the character creation section of the rules . . .
Thanks for so much transparency Fred!
At this point I think we're at least slightly into the black, if not substantially. VERY ROUGHLY estimating, given $130,000, I'd guess:
$13k goes to payment processing and kickstarter combined
$25-40k goes to shipping (this is a big guess, hence the wide range)
$25k or more goes to printing, depending on ultimate formats, and including the printing of surplus product beyond what will be shipped to backers
$10+k probably goes to art in one form or another
$20k, maybe more, goes to writing and editing
$5-10k goes into layout depending on scenarios
That puts us somewhere in the very low $100k range, give or take, which would still leave us $20-30k in the black. Some of that stuff scales, some of it doesn't. A lot of that "in the black" right now would go into funding other projects beyond the Kickstarter -- as intended, that's why we're doing stretch goals now that are more about "we promise to make Thing X, and you'll at least get the digital", where the physical thing that ultimately results will get sold separately from the kickstarter. Helps build up the black, fund those things, and leave a little profit for growth. You know: business!
At any rate, we got this. I appreciate the good-intentioned concern. :)
Yeah. You guys aren't gonna go broke or anything from this, right? I mean, if enough of that cash up there is devoted to printed books, I could see that potentially running into cost overruns.
You're all good, right?
Man -- after this, I'm *never* going to feel like I'm getting my money's worth in a Kickstarter again. Are you keeping a running pagecount of this project? Standardizing on the 6" x 9" format, if you printed everything, it's gotta be nearing (or over) 1000 pages by this point.
You'll have to settle for something about a nuclear-powered robot instead, Jayson. My bad.
Wade: Evil Hat is unstintingly generous when it comes to bits and bytes. Take a look at the KS for Dinocalypse Trilogy... that was SEVEN full length novels in ebook format, for ten bucks, on top of things like wallpapers and the like.
Mind you, this has gone WAAAAY beyond that already. But Fred is a man of his word, and "all expansions" means ALL, including this.
Dear Fred: Please move Shadow to the TOP of your queue. I want this by summer!
Can't argue with the reaction. It's gonna be awesome.
I was a Feng Shui playtester. Spent many an hour playing Shadowfist and hoped someone would revitalize the game. Now here it comes, Fate-ified. ;-) I'm already backing at a high level, so, can't wait.
You've got it right, Wade. $10 gets you a TON of PDFs, including Shadow if funded, and probably represents at least a 75% discount on what they'd all be to buy individually after the KSer (tho we'll probably have a bundle to make getting all of the settings for cheaper, but not THAT cheaper).
I see some comments regarding upping a pledge, I guess I just wanted to clarify... as long as you have pledged $10, then your elligible for this upgrade of Shadow of the century PDF. right?
Which means that I'll be pushing to expose more people to this one to get them to pledge, but wouldn't necessarily need to 'up grade' my pledge beyond the $10 level. (correct me if I am wrong.)
that said, this kickstarter has SO MUCH FREAKING VALUE in it for a mere 10$, I feel almost morally obligated to kick in more cash heh. Thanks for showing the world how a Kickstarter upgrade program should be run! Thanks!
When some purple-haired, RPG-publishing maniac grabs your nostalgia, taps the back of your favorite head up against the barroom wall, and he looks you crooked in the eye and he asks you if ya upped your pledge, you just stare that big sucker right back in the eye, and you remember what ol' Jack Burton always says at a time like that: "Have ya upper yer pledge, Jack?"
"Yessir, the check is in the mail."
Sounds great. And I agree with Hendel Masad.
You're really shaking the pillars of heaven, aren't you, Fred?
So with this could I now make games along the lines of films like Timestalkers, Eliminaters and J.O.E. And the Colonel?
I <3 The Fate-ies.
Let me 2nd, 3rd, 4th etc the motion to update SOTC itself.
Oh right, I forgot to mention earlier, I suppose the choice of year 1984 is not entirely coincidental? You know, THE 1984?
Shadow sounds very cool. Those shows from the 1970's and 1980's were so much fun to watch.
I also want to second John M. Campbell's motion for updating SOTC to FateCore.
John -- We'll see. :)
How about an update of Spirit to the new fatecore rules? Is that something we could see in the future?
My goodness, I've been excited for hours remembering those weird old TV series I used to watch when I was a kid, like Manimal or Misfits of Science and I'm quite looking forward to bring those memories to play.
Besides, to echo what's been already said below, being new to Evil Hat (at the exception of 'Do') and Fate, I too wouldn't mind seeing/purchasing an updated version of Spirit of the Century if you ever considered publishing one.
Wow, a followup to SotC?!?!? My eyes are moist and you guys rock!
And here I was all excited for the name drop :-P.
Me no bright! Thanks Martin, er sorry, I mean Fred ;)
Er, sorry, that was for Dave. :->
It's $155k, Jason -- shown on the graphic on the front page of the project!
Actually now that I think of it, my first Shadow character will be a mad science PhD with an unlicensed nuclear accelerator on his back....
I was going to move my pledge up to the 80 buck level before this... now instead of delaying, I've moved up to that level. Thanks Fred!!
Am I missing, or not understanding something?
Do we know what the goal for this is in a fiscal sense, coz I want to play this yesterday!!!
Don't forget another important 80's thing: Warring Alien Robots in Disguise...
Now I wish that Jack Burton's truck was voiced by Peter Cullen. Hehehehe....
Holy Hell! Have my money...all of it. :)
Looking forward to this! I used SotC to run a Buckaroo Banzai one-shot four or five years ago.
So.. A Crossworlds/Sliders game where we go into the Lost World of Dinopocalypse Triumphant and help the Plumber Brothers angaist the Psychosaur Kings and rescue the princess isn't out of the question?
WOW, just wow. I've been dreaming about a setting JUST LIKE THIS. Two of my FAVORITE movies of ALL time are Big Trouble in Little China and The Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai Across the Eighth Dimension!!! Perfectly, exactly the same concepts... Hell, I picked up SotC so I can I could play New Wave Pulp 80's rpg, but I don't have the talent, creativity or writing skills to write my own... If I had time I was going to attempt to write the setting myself, and call it just that: New Wave: 80's Pulp Adventure. Now I don't have to! You guys are awesome! I'll be bumping up my pledge after XMAS...
This is the most incredibly cool idea ever, and I NEVER imagined anything even remotely like this was coming. Goodonya, EHP!
This is probably self-evident, but it sounds like it's going to be primarily drawn from American culture? I obviously had a number of different late 70s-early 80s pulp action heroes, like Yoko Tsuno and Dr. Justice from European comics.
You had me at "A-Team."
This sounds like it will be EPIC, would love to use it to make some super-soldier games.
Best. Expansion. Ever.
I would totally run shadow of the century; awesome!
One of the closed-off timelines is, in fact, Dinocalypse Triumphant, in all likelihood. :)
Level of excitement: At The Max.
Like Prime Time Adventures and Cartoon Action Hour spliced with League of Extraordinary Gentlemen 1985, and I couldn't be more psyched if my computer just told me I'd been recruited by the Star League to defend the Frontier against Xur and the Kodan Armada.
I want to use this supplement to play Heat Vision and Jack, Goonies, Flight of the Navigator, American Ninja and They Live. This is maybe the awesomest. "Radical", if you will.
The 80's film and TV inspiration:
The backroads trucker and his effusive ape sidekick.
The crack commando unit fleeing an unjust court martial.
The ex-cop with the talking motorcycle.
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0088618/ (? - But it didnt talk)
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0083437/ (? - but it wasnt a bike)
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0127398/ (? - but he wanst a cop)
Not to mention the free spirit who ran into all that ruckus in Little China some months back.
The teenybopper covert-operations troubleshooter team.
My first character is likely to be heavily influenced by Short Circuit. Also I see no mention of dinosaurs slipping in from other time-streams... and I WANT dinosaurs! Also space robots, please.
Don't forget MacGyver and you have my money.
Also, in case people haven't seen it yet... This is also what immediately sprung to my mind:
Oh yes. yesssss. This'll be amazing. Shut up and take my money.
(I'm totally going to have minigames where people have to delve into computers to shore up digital security in Tron or Reboot minigames.)
Well, you definitely know your fans. This sounds insanely cool.
Bravo, good Sir. Bravo.
80s pulp action tomfoolery? AT MY GAMING TABLE?!?
Fred, you madman, you've just made my day a thousand percent more awesome.
