About

It started out as an 8-page storybook and turned into a 75,000 word Middle Grade novel. A just-for-fun collaboration between father and daughter has catapulted the dad into the world of writing while catching the attention of a publishing house.

Ordinary Everyday Isabelle is the story of a gifted eleven year old girl who attends a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) academy in her hometown of Rose Valley, Virginia.

Isabelle Cooley struggles with the development of her robotic personal assistant (MechAnna) and coexisting with her smart-mouthed brother Mason who she's temporarily forced to share a room with at home.

All the while, Rose Valley is ill-at-ease as a team of four-legged robotic thugs have been burglarizing banks and the police seem helpless to do anything about it.

A chance encounter with the new girl at school, obnoxious (but brilliant) Crystal Skorch, sets into a motion a chain of events that puts Isabelle and her friends Jasmine Hubbard and Maddy McCarthy into contact with a mysterious artifact that grants them strange powers.

The girls struggle with their newfound abilities and decide to keep them secret. Isabelle is able to convince her friends that they should harness their powers to become amateur superheroes.

However, being superheroes isn't all it's cracked up to be. After experiencing a few close calls and just a taste of success, they learn that a pair of menacing figures that were once looking for the mysterious artifact are now hunting them instead.

With problems piling up and their friendships pushed to the very edge, it would seem they have nowhere to turn. Out of desperation, they seek out an eccentric scientist-turned-television personality in hopes that they may finally get answers.

When the true nature of the object that gave them the powers is revealed and it's learned who will suffer because of their decisions, Isabelle and her friends try to set things right, but Crystal has ambitions of her own.

Why should you back this project?

  • The story features three young, strong, and brilliant female leads.
  • Since this project started as my daughter's handwritten storybook, I want to demonstrate to her that she can achieve anything if she sets her mind and heart to it.
  • We are halfway there. Words Matter Publishing is already putting forth half of production and marketing costs.

Risks and challenges

I submitted the first three chapters to Words Matter Publishing and after about three weeks, I was surprised to receive a request for the full manuscript.
A few days later, I received notification that Words Matter Publishing would like to pick up my novel. They said the writing was solid, the characters believable, and that this Middle Grade novel would be a good fit for them. However, as a brand-new writer with no author platform and no other works under my belt, I’d be unable to sustain sales to support a full print run.
I was offered a limited contract where I would have to raise half of production and marketing costs to prepare my novel for a Print-On-Demand basis.
If I am successful in raising these funds Ordinary Everyday Isabelle will be available for sale on Amazon, Barnes and Noble and thousands of other booksellers. It will also be on the shelves of local retail stores and sold as an e-book, all while I build up my author platform and work toward the goal of a traditional publishing contract for the upcoming sequel. (Working title: Extraordinary Isabelle)
With the full backing of Words Matter Publishing, I’ll be taking the first step toward that lofty goal of being a published writer.
I’m asking for your help. For a few bucks, I can put this fun novel in your hands or your kid’s hands, and you can help this fledgling author take the first baby steps toward his dream.
