My name is Evan! I've been creating and self-publishing fantasy-adventure comics online and in print since 2006. For the past eight years, I've been working primarily on Vattu, an enormous graphic novel series about a girl captured by an empire.
I'm running this Kickstarter to finally print the THIRD collection of this story, containing almost 400 pages of the comic. All of the contents of this book are finished; all that's left to do is get the books printed. This Kickstarter is the place to preorder the third book of Vattu, or get the entire series so far. Thank you for helping make this possible!
Vattu is an expansive fantasy adventure comic, and is the third graphic novel set in a world of strange creatures called Overside. Vattu is a girl from a nomadic society who is caught in the middle of a clash of cultures with the conquering Empire of Sahta. In the first two books, Vattu is taken from the idyllic grassland of the Fluters, and must find her way through a new world of zealous conquerors, and the many peoples incorporated into their Empire: mute, monstrous slave-soldiers from across the sea; chemist-priestesses who manufacture an addictive drug; and amphibian people called Grish who struggle for a foothold in the capital city of Sahta.
In the third book, Vattu is taken in by the Emperor of Sahta and begins to see an entirely different perspective on the Empire and the nature of its power. At the same time, a cunning pirate named Bakrah lands among the Grish, and begins to see how their marginalization and righteous anger can be tools for his own power. Reactive and revolutionary tendencies throughout the city's populations begin to emerge.
The fourth book will be the last book of Vattu.
Each of the books has focused on a particular population within the Empire and its capital city, and a particular angle on Vattu's central concerns of political power and the development of identity within and against it. This is a huge, strange, meditative comic: it is the largest and most complicated thing I can imagine working on as an individual, and I am grateful to my audience for making it possible for me to focus on it.
Book 3 of Vattu will be printed in paperback and hardcover versions, to match the first two books (though it has about 25% more pages than either). The paperback edition will have a matte cover and french flaps, with a wordless full-bleed image on the front cover. The hardcover will have a cover of gray cloth over board, with Vattu's icon printed and debossed on the front, and a ribbon bookmark in red. Hardcovers will have a white partial jacket to match the first books. You can see photos of the previous books here and here to get an idea.
Like the first two, Book 3 will have a "title sequence" of extra art, and an appendix section with several world-internal maps and documents.
The books represent the ideal presentation of the comic, in my opinion: extra content is world-internal and supports the story, and I've tried to present the story in an immersive and beautiful way.
Very few extra things for this Kickstarter! I am prioritizing just getting the book printed. Every book of Vattu ordered through this Kickstarter will include a signed bookplate. Some tiers include the option of a print: this image is meant to be the portrait of Vattu that is painted in the comic itself, and also appears in the appendix of Book 3. No more of these will be printed than are preordered through this Kickstarter.
Copies of my earlier graphic novel Order of Tales are also available through this Kickstarter (in print, online). Order of Tales is an atmospheric adventure story following the last member of a society of story-collectors, as he becomes involved in a secret conflict involving a mysterious being made of glass, and thousands of years of violent history.
The only stretch goal for the project will be a reprint of the paperback version of Vattu Book 2! At $35,000, which is 7K over the initial goal. We're running low on Vattu 2 and I'd like the whole story to be available in print consistently. Whether we meet this goal or not, the previous Vattu books are available through this Kickstarter.
Working with the printers and fulfilling the rewards will be handled by Make that Thing! They're well-equipped for this and they've helped run a number of big book projects on Kickstarter, including my second book of Vattu, and illustrated Wizard of Oz and Moby-Dick.
The 28,000 USD goal for this project includes an estimated $13,000 to get both versions of Vattu Book 3 and the extras produced, and an additional amount to cover shipping and handling, and Make That Thing!'s fee.
Thank you for reading, and thank you for your support!

Risks and challenges
This is the seventh book I've self-published, and the fourth I've made with Make That Thing. The format is identical to the previous Vattu books. A lot of extra time has been factored in to the estimates here to account for possible holdups in printing, and getting the books shipped to the United States, which always takes a long and unpredictable amount of time.
I'm working with Make That Thing again this time; they'll be talking to the book printer and getting all of the rewards sent to backers and that's something they're good at and have done a lot of!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
