I'd like to get the second book of my fantasy adventure comic series Vattu printed! The contents are already finished (and online as a webcomic here), so this Kickstarter is to raise money to get it printed, AND to reprint the first book of Vattu, both in paperback and deluxe hardcover editions!
This Kickstarter is the place to preorder the second Vattu book, and help make this possible! And you can get the first one, and some other graphic novels I've made too!
Vattu is an expansive fantasy adventure comic, and is the third graphic novel set in a world called Overside. Vattu is a girl from a nomadic society who is caught in the middle of a clash of cultures with a ruthless imperialistic civilization called Sahta. In the first two books, Vattu is taken from the idyllic grassland of the Fluters, and must find her way through a new world of zealous conquerors, and the many peoples incorporated into their Empire: mute, monstrous slave-soldiers from across the sea; chemist-priestesses who manufacture an addictive drug; and amphibian people who struggle for a foothold in the capital city of Sahta.
I've been publishing Vattu online since 2010; it's the biggest project I've ever worked on. It's the winner of a 2014 Ignatz Award. The first book is already in print, and it'll be four books long when it's done.
Both books of Vattu have extra art and appendix sections with world-internal maps and documents. The second book of Vattu will match the first book! Paperback editions both have matte covers and french flaps; hardcovers have printing on gray book-cloth, and ribbon bookmarks. There will also be signed bookplates available through this Kickstarter, designed to fit the Vattu books!
The books represent the ideal presentation of the comic, in my opinion: extra content is world-internal and supports the story, and I've tried to present the story in an immersive and beautiful way.
This Kickstarter is a way to preorder the second book of Vattu, BUT ALSO it's a way to get the other books I've made at a bit of a discount! This includes the first book of Vattu, and:
Rice Boy, my first comic set in Overside, a surreal adventure story following an unassuming creature called Rice Boy and an ageless machine-man called The One Electronic as they journey through a strange world to fulfill an ancient prophecy that they hardly understand.
Order of Tales, an atmospheric adventure story following the last member of a society of story-collectors, as he becomes involved in a secret conflict involving a mysterious being made of glass, and thousands of years of violent history.
More details on these books here. No extra trinkets for this Kickstarter! Just enormous comic books.
Printer-interfacing and reward fulfillment will be handled by Make that Thing! They're well-equipped for this and they've done good work in the past dealing with bigger and fancier projects than this one. Last year they did Kickstarter fulfillment for my illustrated edition of the Wizard of Oz.
The goal for this Kickstarter was decided on based on a quote for getting the books printed (Volume 2 in paperback and hardcover, and a reprint of volume 1), and an estimate of shipping cost for fulfilling rewards, and 10% for Kickstarter.
Thank you for reading, and thank you for your support!

Stretch Goals: So far I only have one stretch goal in mind: when we reach $25,000, the hardcover editions of book 2 will have a partial jacket to match book 1!
Risks and challenges
This is the fifth book I've self-published, and the format is basically identical to the first book of Vattu. A lot of extra time has been factored in to the estimates here to account for possible holdups in printing, and getting the books shipped to the United States, which always takes a long and unpredictable amount of time.
I'm working with MAKE THAT THING again this time; they'll be talking to the book printer and getting all of the rewards sent to backers and that's something they're really good at!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
