About this project
My name is Evan Dahm and I draw comics! I've completed the fantasy adventure stories Rice Boy and Order of Tales, and run Kickstarters to self-publish both of them. I've also made a few books with Benign Kingdom.
I've been working on an ambitious fantasy graphic novel called Vattu since 2010. This Kickstarter is to raise money to get the first book of the story printed. Its contents are already finished, and you can preorder it and get some other stuff through the Kickstarter!
Vattu is a fantasy comic that takes place in Overside, the setting full of strange creatures that I've developed throughout my work. It's about a girl from a nomadic society who is caught in the middle of a clash of cultures with an enormous, imperialistic civilization called Sahta. It's a story about culture and identity. It's ongoing and is being updated three times a week at rice-boy.com. You can read it there right now for free!
The first book of Vattu, called The Name & The Mark, covers its first 270 pages, and follows Vattu from the plains where she is born to the capital of Sahta.
Both versions of the book will have the same interiors: 270 pages of story, and extra material including world-internal maps and landscape art. I've tried to make the design as image-heavy and immersive as I can. The books are the same size and similar in design to the Rice Boy and Order of Tales books.
Both versions will be available also as Artist Editions, meaning they will be signed and have a small illustration on the title page.
The standard edition of Vattu: the Name & the Mark will be paperback and 6 by 9 inches. The cover will have a nice matte coating, and french flaps. The front cover features a full-bleed wordless image of Vattu in the plains.
The deluxe version of Vattu: the Name & the Mark will be hardcover and 6 by 9 inches. The cover will be in gray cloth over board, with screen printing in white and yellow ink. The front cover bears Vattu's mark, and the spine bears her name written in the world-internal script. Less of the deluxe version will be produced than the standard version, but they will not be limited and numbered as my previous hardcovers have been.
Because we reached 50,000, the hardcovers will have a partial book jacket. Here's a mockup of what that will probably look like:
In addition to the book, backers can get a set of six 6 x 9 inch prints featuring characters from Vattu. Here is what they look like:
There will also be TWO Kickstarter-exclusive 6 x 9 inch prints in addition to this set. These two prints will accompany every physical reward from this Kickstarter. Here's what one of them will look like (the type at the bottom won't be on the print, though!):
Several pledge levels also include copies of my previous Overside books, Rice Boy and Order of Tales, in both paperback and hardcover editions. The hardcover Rice Boy books are almost sold out, so only the last few are available through the Kickstarter! Here is what those books look like:
I have added two pledge levels which include the two pieces of original art shown below. These are the original drawings from which the six-print series made for this Kickstarter are being made. They are drawn in ink over pencil on 14 by 17 inch bristol board. There are some small mistakes and brush test marks around the edges!

Risks and challenges
The contents of the book are finished and a printer is already locked in to get started as soon as possible if the Kickstarter is a success! Setbacks with the printer working on big fancy books have happened for me in the past, but this should be my smoothest project yet.
The books will be printed overseas and should arrive in late September or October. They will be sent to backers as quickly as possible.
Commissions will take a bit longer depending on how many there are!
No, it will be WAY too big! I intend for it to be a series of books that match this one, each around 250 to 400 pages. The books will be, while not narratively self-contained, thematically internally-consistent.
The amounts for international shipping are based on the cost of sending the Rice Boy book internationally, which is about what the weight of the Vattu book will be. I wish it wasn't so expensive to send three-pound books to other countries but it is, I'm sorry!!
Nope, sorry! 200 were made, they were explicitly limited edition, and the last of them are being sold through this Kickstarter.
