We have made goal!! Thank you everybody! There's still some time left, so I'm putting up some push goals to make the books nicer as we move ahead. Details at the bottom!
I've made an illustrated edition of The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, the original book written by L. Frank Baum in 1900. The book is in the public domain, so I'd like to get it printed in a fancy hardcover edition!
The Wonderful Wizard of Oz is a beautiful, dreamlike book, and it's very different from the adaptations that are more widely-known. In the illustrations, I've tried to emphasize the strange atmosphere of its setting, and the sense of being lost and overwhelmed by an otherworldly place. I made almost 100 illustrations for the book: 24 of them are full-page illustrations that begin each chapter. The rest are spot illustrations that emphasize the characters. For the past year, I've been publishing this process online at Baum by Dahm.
This book will contain the ENTIRE UNABRIDGED TEXT, including Baum's introduction from 1900. The illustrations are scattered throughout the almost 200 pages, and I've tried to make them support the text, not distract from it.
We're already talking to the printer (the same printer that made some of my previous books), and most of the design work is finished. The interior illustrations are all in color, and the 24 full-page illustrations are full-bleed. The book will be 6 by 9 inches, with a cover of blue cloth over board, and a paper onlay on the cover as shown in the mockup above. I've also received a dummy book from the printer, which shows what the binding and paper quality will look like!
I'm working on this thing with Make that Thing! They're a part of Topatoco, and they have a lot of experience and infrastructure to deal with getting tons of books printed, and getting them to people swiftly. This has been the hardest part of Kickstarters for me in the past, so I'm very excited to work with them.
I'm keeping this Kickstarter simple! There is one version of the book, and you can get it as a reward with or without a Kickstarter-exclusive bookplate. The bookplate will be affixed to the inside cover. It will have a small illustration and I'll sign each one!
Individual books with bookplates will get the version on the left. Sets of two books with bookplates will get one of each. The border and text will be foil-stamped.
There are also a couple of levels with retailers in mind: 10 copies of the book can be preordered at 60% cover price.
If we go over goal, I have some push goals in mind, but most of all I'd just like to make the book as nice as possible!
My name is Evan Dahm; I'm a cartoonist and illustrator living in Brooklyn. I've made tons of my own work in comics, but this is the first big illustration project I've worked on. I've done a few Kickstarters in the past to get my own work printed, and they've turned out some very nice books!
Risks and challenges
The art and design is done, and we're already talking to the printer. I've used Kickstarter to get several books self-published before, three of which have been made with the same printer as will print this book!
Fulfillment has always been harder than I expected for Kickstarter projects, and I'm happy to be working with people who are equipped to do that part well, even if this project does very well!!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
