Hi, we’re Mike & Euvie, the creators of Red Lipstick Project. Now that you’ve heard a bit about us, we’d like to talk more about the project (if you’d like to learn more about us and the stuff we’ve done in the past, read on and you will find the relevant links at the bottom).
Red Lipstick Project is an exploration of all the different meanings of red lipstick in society - from classic to trashy, from political to fashionable, from creepy to dreamy - the list goes on! Euvie photographed over 60 women (and even a few men) for the project last year. Most of the women who were photographed weren’t models and had little experience being in front of the camera. We want to empower women, help them feel confident and realize that they don’t have to be models to look and feel beautiful. And the men who wore red lipstick for the project found it very liberating too. It was a really memorable experience for all the participants!
We want to continue with the project this year by doing a photoshoot tour down the West Coast of US and Canada. When we come back from the tour, we are going to post all the best photos from the tour online, design a coffee table book, print many of the photographs, and launch it all together at the Red Lipstick Project art show party in Vancouver BC in the fall of 2012.
We’re making many cool rewards available to our backers, including photoshoots, photo books, postcards, different types of prints, and more. After the show, we will be mailing out these rewards to our backers.
There are many ways to get involved in the project - so even if the photoshoot spots sell out, you can still be a part of the project in other ways.
Currently we are planning to visit 5 cities:
The tour will happen in August or September 2012. We will be doing group Guerrilla Photoshoots and individual photoshoots in those cities, as well as meet-and-greets. We have never been to California, so it will be really exciting for us to see the sights and meet all of your guys as well. We really wanted to do this tour last year, but just didn’t have the budget for it, so we are really happy to be doing it this year!
We are offering a variety of photoshoot options as rewards to our backers. There are two main kinds, individual and guerrilla shoots.
Individual photoshoots are a great way to get some personalized photographs. If you have ideas, you can discuss them with Euvie prior to the shoot and pick a theme that appeals to you. At the photoshoot, Euvie will send time with you helping you figure out your best poses & angles. The photoshoots take between 1 and 2 hours, and in this time we can try multiple themes and outfits, and you can really get comfortable and explore the different sides of you.
Guerilla Photoshoots were actually inspired by a roaming hotdog stand. We thought it would be cool to tweet out a location and anyone who was in the area could show up and get their photo taken for the project. There were a lot of on-the-spot collaborations and many people showed up in random costumes, with funky hair & make-up, and props. The only unifying feature was the red lipstick, and that’s exactly what we hoped for! The shoot itself is rapid fire and exciting, so drink your coffees! The main difference for the Kickstarter version of the Guerrilla Photoshoot is that we’ll make sure you guys know in advance when and where the shoots will be.
Last year, we put our heads together, and with the help of some amazing volunteers and contributors, held our own art show with 42 pieces at a local gallery. We wanted to do something new and unique, so we made aluminum, hardboard and canvas prints of the photographs, instead of using traditional paper. We got a DJ, a make-up artist, an event photographer, a bar, and made the whole thing into an awesome party!
We did it all on a shoestring budget, and though it was very exhausting, everyone involved had so much fun that we wanted to do it again - but bigger and better! If we go over our goal, we will hire some really cool performers for the art show party (see info in the budget section). We are also releasing a limited number of special early bird art show tickets exclusively to our backers!
We are offering many print options on sleek aluminum sheets, as well as the more classic archival photo paper and canvas options. The art show will feature a mix of canvas and aluminum prints - we used them last time, and everyone loved them! All prints will be mailed to our backers after the art show - every reward that includes a print also includes worldwide shipping. The prints come in all sorts of sizes, from medium to massive, and for most of them you can choose the photo from our photography website or Facebook page.
We have many beautiful images from the project, and we will get many more from this tour. Last year, we really wanted to release a coffee table book with the photos from the project, but since we aren’t backed by a publishing house, doing that was too expensive and time consuming. This Kickstarter project will allow us to accomplish this goal, and bring our beautiful books to the world! The books will be hardbound with a photograph on the cover, with pages printed on high quality archival photo paper. The books will have many of Euvie’s best photographs of past & new Red Lipstick Project individual photoshoot participants; feature interviews and full-page photo profiles of the major Red Lipstick Project supporters; and include a matrix of the images from our group Guerrilla Photoshoots (see the rewards section on the right for details on the packages that include the different photoshoots & book feature options).
We are asking for $36,000 to fund what is essentially three projects in one - the tour, the art show, and the book. Or five in one, if we get to do the documentary and the music score too.If we reach our funding goal, here is how the funds will be spent:10% goes to Kickstarter & Amazon fees. Taxes also need to be included (we're legit!).The rest will go to:
- Car rental, gas, food, and accommodation for the trip for the two of us
- Portable photo & editing equipment
- Deliverables: prints, books, including shipping costs
- Art show costs: space rental, DJ, staff, licenses, etc
This is the bare minimum we need to make this tour, art show & book happen. If we go over our target, we will add a bunch of awesome stuff and make every element of the project bigger and more awesome!
Second target: $41,000
If we reach this level, we will film & produce a documentary of our tour, which all of our backers will get to see before the official release date. The video will feature exclusive behind the scenes footage from many beautiful photoshoots; candid moments and adventures from the tour; and of course, lots of silliness and love!
Third Target: $46,000
If we reach this level, we will add two major cities to our itinerary. That way, we can meet and photograph more of you guys! If we go a bit over that, we will also hire some amazing performersfor the Red Lipstick Project art show party to make it extra fabulous - and all of our backers who pre-book their ticket through this Kickstarter project will still get in at the original price!Fourth
Fourth Target: $56,000
If we reach this level, we will write & record the musical score for the documentary! We both have a lifelong background in music (Mike graduated from the Audio Recording program at the Art Institute of Vancouver and works as a music engineer & producer; and Euvie went to music school for 7 years while living in Russia). This would be absolutely amazing, a lifelong dream for both of us.
A few last words:
It is so amazing how many awesome projects are coming to life every day through Kickstarter, it’s incredibly inspirational and moving! We are stoked to be launching this, and we hope you will be equally stoked to participate!
We want to get as many people involved as possible - help us spread the word by sharing the link to this kickstarter project with your friends on Facebook, Twitter, and other social networks! No matter how little or how much you can pledge, sharing & talking about this project is a really important part of making sure we reach our goal and make this project happen for all of you guys to enjoy! Thank you, and we are so stoked about this!!!Here are the links to our previous work:
