"Vibrant, thoughtful, and beautifully interactive" - Julian Lage
"Ethan is one of those greatly informed young musicians of today who knows the roots of the music he is creating, but is not afraid to search and carve out his own voice within this new tradition." - Mike Marshall
Hello. My name's Ethan Setiawan. I'm making a record in the vein of the music of Béla Fleck, Chris Thile, and Matt Flinner, named Flux. I've spent time playing some widely varied music, from traditional bluegrass to Bach partitas to free jazz, and this record is made up of original tunes drawing from all these wells. The band on the record features some of the very best hot-shot-young-guns currently shaking up the bluegrass world: Julian Pinelli and Avery Merritt on fiddles, Sam Leslie on guitar, and Jacob Warren playing bass.
Here's Back & Forth, one of the tunes on the record:
A quick bit about me before we go further: I work as a freelance mandolinist, and am honored to have won the National Mandolin Championship and the RockyGrass Mandolin Championship. I've been lucky enough to play on some amazing stages, including the Savannah Music Festival and Prairie Home Companion (now known as Live From Here.) At Berklee College of Music in Boston, I've been stretching some compositional wings and this felt like as good a time as any to make a record.
I decided to make this record in January of 2017, and started writing then. It ended up a bit of a research project, and to that end I analyzed an entire spreadsheet of Béla Fleck tunes during the writing process. With one exception the entire record was written between January and May last year. Joe K. Walsh, an amazing mandolinist and my teacher at Berklee during that time, was an invaluable resource; without his input these tunes and this record might not exist.
Funds from this Kickstarter project will go towards:
- Compensating musicians
- Recording (studio time and engineering)
- Kickstarter's fees
I'm really stoked about the team of folks I'm working with to get this album out there in the world. The band and Joe are were fantastic to work with. Dan Bui of Twisted Pine, a fantastic Boston-based quasi-bluegrass band, is mixing and engineered the record at the Record Company in Boston. Louise Bichan, a wonderful Scottish fiddler, is designing the album artwork and took the videos and pictures in this description. May 18th, 2018 is the day planned to release this record.
“The future of acoustic music is in good hands! All these guys are future leaders and torch bearers on their respective instruments. The fact that they're making music together is raising the bar for all of us!” - Bryan Sutton
If you should choose to help me out with Flux, I appreciate your help more than you could imagine. People that hold a passion for the arts and artists are what enables so many creatives to work on what makes them spark. From the bottom of my heart, thank you.
Here's another tune, called Carrot Seed:
"Ethan Setiawan is a student of mine of whom I am most proud...given the results his combination of talent and discipline have yielded thus far, it will be very exciting to hear what comes next." - Don Stiernberg
"There’s no doubt in my mind that Ethan Setiawan will be one of the major forces on the mandolin in the next 50 years." - Jacob Jolliff
Risks and challenges
While the album is fully recorded, the mixing and mastering process is still going on. Design is also still a work in progress right now, but barring any unforeseen setbacks, getting everything done by May is entirely within reach.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
