Do you want to know what would have happened if Bruce Lee lived? What if 40 years later he became a fully realized Grandmaster…Introducing Grandmaster Adam Nguyen in "Eyes of the Roshi."
Lets take a trip to 1980’s Virginia Beach. A Theatrical and Entertainment Attorney by the name of Albert E. Marten and his family were in the process of building Virginia’s first full-service motion picture studio. Sons Richard, Jonathan, Seth, and Ethan Marten dreamed of turning Suffolk, Virginia into Hollywood East. During the process of construction, a Master Adam Nguyen approached Albert with a proposition: “You should make a film about me.” His idea was to make a fictional action flick starring a real life master of Martial Arts. Descended from centuries of Kings in Vietnam and trained in the ancient arts of Karate-do and Yoga, Master Adam had the backstory and martial arts experience for amazing action and story. As a result of his offering, he ended up with several new Yoga students, but the project was put off for the time being.
25 years later, Ethan achieved his professional filmmaker status with 17 features and television shows under his belt. Master Adam became Grandmaster in the arts of Karate-do and Yoga. But, an action film starring Adam still had not been made. As the years passed, Adam would come back to the Martens and make the same statement: “You should make a film about me.” Then they would enjoy a bowl of pho noodles together. Finally, on an overcast January day in 2014, Ethan Marten, Grandmaster Adam Nguyen, Richard Marten, Mari Mann sat in Adam’s home and, in the form of the late Albert E. Marten, shook hands on the production of Eyes of the Roshi.
Since shaking hands on the production, a fantastic script has been written, money has been raised, crew has been assembled, and casting calls are being sent out. Eyes of the Roshi is in full pre-production mode, but we need some help. This film is an independent feature, and while we have enough money to get it fully produced, we still want to raise 20,000 dollars to increase production quality and work atmosphere for the filmmakers on set. With your help, we can raise money for better equipment, food for the crew, and accommodations for the cast.
EYES OF THE ROSHI is a film about choices. Saigon, 1973. A boy discovers a dead body on the side of the road. The decision he makes will haunt him until the end of his days….
Now a fully realized Grandmaster, and far from his home, Adam Nguyen is a stranger in a strange land. He must overcome his reluctance, summon his inner warrior, and battle to protect his adopted home, and the ones he loves. Light Age Films presents Eyes of the Roshi, a full length feature film.
Ethan Marten (Producer): Ethan is President and CEO of Light Age Films, has produced and/or executive produced 17 episodes of television, and 14 motion pictures, including White Buffalo: An American Prophecy; and sci-fi thriller Atlantis Down with Michael Rooker. Master Adam is a gifted, world class Grandmaster, who has developed a unique and innovative system based on Royal Yoga and his 50+ years of experience practicing and teaching yoga, Zen meditation, and Karate-Do around the world.
Jon Mark Nail (Director): "For me, as an artist, the magic of Cinema is being able to capture a moment of universal truth. To make each and every person in the audience feel exposed. Have you ever found yourself talking to the movie screen? I know I have. Those are the moments when you realize something about yourself, something you didn’t know, something about humanity, realize that you are growing and yearn to know more. What I am most interested in exploring is relationships and the people who are in them. Who does what, and to whom? Why? And of course, what happens then? We are interested in hearing stories about people because we are people. We are flawed. We have all made mistakes. And yet we all, inside each and every one of us, believe in the hope and endurance of the human spirit to conquer whatever steps into our path. It is this hope that links us."
Austin Burnette (Director of Photography): This is Austin's 3rd feature as Director of Photography. He has worked on more than 20 music videos with everyone from Melissa Gorga to Pusha T and No Malice. He is excited to be working again with his long time collaborator and fellow Regent University graduate, Jon Mark Nail. He is looking forward to taking his skills to next level with Eyes of the Roshi, and knows that it will continue to be a very rewarding journey.

Her first novel, Parisian by Heart, was a quarter-finalist in Amazon’s 2011 Breakthrough Novel Award. Her lifelong interest in ancient history, native cultures, art and literature led her to a Master’s Degree centered on Maya art and architecture, to an archaeological dig on an Anasazi site in the Southwest. In 2012 she began co-authoring a book with her Yoga teacher, Master Adam, about his life and teachings. In 2014 it became the basis for Eyes of the Roshi.
Joe Baum (First Assistant Director): Joe’s passion is making things. He’s a thinker and a dreamer. Jonathan DeMelkon (Camera Team): Jonathan is a budding DP/Director and sophomore at Regent University, is currently a freelance camera assistant. He's been shooting BTS for Eyes of The Roshi during pre-production, and looks forward to being on camera team for this Light Age Films feature.

The inspiration and origination of the movie comes from Grandmaster Nguyen's own royal family lineage - a form of yoga and karate-do they have been teaching for 1,000 years in Vietnam…and now, America. Grandmaster Adam will reveal secret techniques of practice once reserved only for Kings, royals, top generals and warriors!
We appreciate the classic Asian Martial Arts films and are drawing from their cinematography and actions sequences in order to mix it with modern film making techniques. The story is a simple one about the complex fight between good and evil. With the mixture of Raja Yoga and Karate-do, a quality story, and cinematography remenesent of classic action films, we are creating a film with an authentic feel. From the fights to the dialogue, Eyes of the Roshi is the real deal.
Eyes of the Roshi is currently a micro budget film. The goal set is a bare minimum that will get us by, but your funding us beyond our goal will boost production value! Your additional funding will allow us to improve production design, feed the crew, help us bring additional resources to raise the motion picture to a higher level! That means:
-Better set dressing and wardrobe to make the world of Master Adam come to life;
-Higher grade equipment that enables us to get those "Hollywood Shots;"
-Housing for the extremely talented team we've assembled from all over the country;
-Enough food to feed our cast and crew of about 50 well for all their hard work (they like food, and we can feed them just so many pizzas!);
In order to bring the BEST possible product, we would ideally like to raise $20,000 +
Our starting goal is set at $5,000. Once we hit this, the film is a go.
If we hit $12,000, we will hire a dedicated Behind The Scenes team to produce the BTS material as well as a documentary on the making of the film.
If we hit our goal of $20,000 dollars, we'll be able to take a crew to Vietnam to shoot sequences on location. Our product will be much more authentic.
There are a plethora of amazing benefits for joining the Roshi Team and backing this incredible campaign! The tier ranking system shows bigger and better benefits as you move up in belt color or Martial Arts actor. Everything from exclusive posters, props, autographed memorabilia. Some of our bigger benefits are limited due to their exclusivity such as being on set, being in the film, and even learning from the Grandmaster himself. Now go forth, and pick which belt you will proudly don when backing our film.
Risks and challenges
Eyes of the Roshi's biggest challenge is not in completion. It is in the level of completion. It is in the level of production value. We wish to bring a more refined, and beautiful movie to the screen.
Eyes of the Roshi will be made and completed. Light Age Films Producer Ethan Marten has raised money for movie studios, television shows, and features since the 90's. His last film, White Buffalo: An American Prophecy is now in post production, and Atlantis Down, starring Michael Rooker (Walking Dead; JFK; Bolden; Guardians of the Galaxy) is in distribution.
One of our greatest challenges is keeping a promise the Producer made to himself years ago. It is in giving opportunities to student filmmakers, and recent graduates to be on set, side-by-side with working industry professionals so they can learn, and earn their way into the industry in a safe and supportive environment. This takes money, too. Everyone needs to be fed, and several need to be housed - not just during the production, but part of preproduction, and during days off. So your contributions help us keep each and every filmmaker and future filmmaker well-fed, and safely housed while we work hard to bring you an original story with both action and heart.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
