My name is Jonathan Estabrooks and I have been a singer and performer all my life. I grew up around all types of music. Whether it was Saturday afternoon opera broadcasts, or listening to Elton John, Roy Orbison, Sinatra or the Beach Boys on vinyl, my young ears were a sponge for music.
I soon joined two local choirs (Opera Lyra Ottawa), with Laurence Ewashko and began performing all over the Ottawa valley with local entertainer Dominic D'arcy and the Company of Musical Theatre, run by Peter Evans. To say I have had an eclectic upbringing in music would be an understatement.
RECENT INTERVIEW ABOUT THE ALBUM ON CBC:
This continued throughout high school, with involvement in orchestra, jazz band, choir and in the formation of a vocal quartet. We had some pretty memorable performances.
I went on to study classical voice at The University of Toronto and the The Juilliard School, but never forgot the diversity of styles that influenced my musical life.
Here is a feature that CTV Ottawa did in 2011.
As I began planning this project, I found myself drawn not to one particular musical genre, but to the great lyricists and songwriters of our time. The list soon included greats such as Stevie Wonder, John Denver, Carlos Gardel, Neil Diamond, Willy Nelson, Sondheim and more and the work of great performers like Frank Sinatra, Mario Lanza, and Dean Martin.
This album is at its core about the paths we take in life. I wanted lyrics that spoke not only to my personal journey and sense of discovery, but also to the collective path we all follow in life, love, faith and that yearning to find a place to call home.
The album will include 12-tracks of both originals and covers. The instrumentation will be a lush 45-piece string orchestra along with a rhythm section of drums, bass and guitar. Some of my collaborators include:
- Oran Eldor, Producer/Orchestrator (John Legend, Broadway, Julie Andrews)
- Macedonian Radio Orchestra
- Jonathan Antoine, tenor (SYCO Recording artist and finalist of Britain's Got Talent)
- Jennifer Thomas, pianist/composer (Award winning composer/classical crossover composer
Here's the viral video that launched Jonathan Antoine to centre stage.

WHERE IS YOUR MONEY GOING?
Recording: We are excited to be bringing together the talents of musicians and engineers from all over the world, including a NYC based rhythm section, a 45-piece string orchestra from Greece and vocals to be recorded in Toronto, Canada and London, England! The costs of paying every musicians fair rates and renting three different studio and paying engineers will cost approximately: $15,000 for all 12 tracks.
Producer/Arranger: This will include the full piano and orchestra arranging, producing fees, music transcription for all 45 musicians, sheet music purchases: $14,000
Mixing: Once all the tracks are recorded, we need to go back through and find the best takes, adjusting levels and tone. Use of the board plus payment of a sound engineer comes to about $6,000.
Mastering: The album is processed using equalization, compression, limiting and noise reduction while the album track sequence is finalized. This is a very important process and really gives an album its final polish. We are hoping to use the same mastering company used by Michael Buble and Josh Groban which will cost $1000 for a 12-track album.
Album photos, layout and design: I am working with a friend who is a great photographer and another who is a graphic designer. I am excited to put the finishing touches on the album cover but this of course costs money, even with a friend discount. For the photo shoot and album layout design it will cost approximately $1500.
Printing/Pressing: To get 1,000 copies of a 6 panel digipack costs about $1400.
Promotion: I sing because we love it, but getting the word out takes an extra push beyond friends, family and my proud mother:) A good publicist usually charges at least $2,000 (probably closer to $3,000 or $4,000 for the entire life of the album) which a radio promoter can cost around $3,000.
These have been fairly conservative estimates of cost. The total here comes to $42,900. You are the final puzzle piece. Getting to $25,000 is our goal and will allow us to complete this amazing project but our PUSH GOAL of $30,000 will allow us to add some additional musical instruments and collaborations. Kickstarter takes 5% of a completed goal. Then Amazon business accounts takes another chunk for processing the payments, so a total of about 8% off the top.
Thanks for stopping by! I hope you will consider joining the team by contributing and spreading the word!
Risks and challenges
I've had a few friends use crowdsourcing for musical projects, and I have tried to learn from their experience and advice. This campaign puts me in charge of direct manufacture and distribution so it will be important to have an effective schedule for delivery. Things can go wrong from shipping delays and increased costs, lost packages and so on.
I will do my best to meet the deadlines, but know that if there are some delays, I am doing my very best to get your rewards out to you in a timely fashion.
As for the in-person items, I look forward to fitting that in at a mutually agreeable time.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
