We're reprinting our sold out Issue 1—as a hardcover limited edition of 1,000 copies, only available on Kickstarter.
Nearly 3 years ago, we ran a successful Kickstarter campaign to print our first issue. Since then, we've added 3 more issues to the collection. But Issue 1 has been SOLD OUT for 2 years. We've received countless requests to bring it back. So, we're bringing it back in a special way!
This is a hardcover limited edition reprint of Issue 1 (limited to 1,000 copies). The interior will remain the same, but we're updating the cover to match our other issues. This limited edition run will be hand numbered by us and is only available on Kickstarter.
You have 20 days to reserve your copy. This campaign ends on Nov. 22nd. We're making it shorter campaign because we'd like to go to press as soon as possible so that you can have your copy in hand by the holidays or shortly after. The retail value of the book is $60. Backers get $10 off. Don't wait to reserve your copy.
Issue 1 Details
TGD’s inaugural ad-free double issue features a collection of inspiring interviews loosely based around the theme of leaps. This issue includes 17 long-form features with those who have followed their instincts and taken risks to pursue their dreams. Their stories encourage, inspire, and challenge us to make the jump, even if—and especially when—we’re afraid.
Issue One features: Tavi Gevinson / Roman Mars / Aaron Draplin / Alastair Humphreys / Sara Blake / James Victore / Scott & Vik Harrison / Elle Luna / Ike Edeani / Timothy Goodman / Anna Wolf / Lotta Nieminen / Zack Arias / Joshua Davis / Debbie Millman / Matt Porterfield / Ryan Bingham
About the Hardcover Edition
We're really excited about this hardcover reprint and the chance to doll up the issue with some nice finishing touches. As the campaign progresses and we finalize the details, this will be updated. We'll be attending press check and will post updates about the process (including video) for those interested in the printing process.

About the Creators
Hi, we’re Ryan & Tina Essmaker, the husband-and-wife duo behind The Great Discontent, a print & online magazine that publishes inspiring, in-depth interviews with today’s artists, makers, and risk-takers.
We launched TGD as a passion project in August 2011 while living in our home state of Michigan. After publishing online for 3 years and moving to New York for work, we simultaneously quit our day jobs to focus on TGD and launched a Kickstarter campaign to print Issue 1.
Since then, we’ve added 3 more print issues, a monthly live event series at Wythe Hotel in Williamsburg, and a podcast. This past August, we celebrated 5 years of TGD and more than 230 interviews published via the web, print, and the podcast.
We’re excited to go back to our roots and revisit Issue 1 in this special edition format. Thank you for your support. We can’t wait to make another magazine with and for you.
Content in our discontent,
Ryan & Tina

Special shoutout to Frank Chimero for his always insightful and generous feedback on all things TGD-related. Next Pizza Friday on us, :buddy:.
Risks and challenges
There are a variety of logistics involved with printing and fulfillment. Thankfully we've spent the past 2+ years printing magazines and running an online shop, so we're well-versed in the process of printing, shipping, and fulfillment.
The content has already been created for this project, we've gotten quotes and selected our printer, and have already planned for shipping. With the print experience and knowledge gained over the past few years of creating and distributing a print publication, we're confident about delivering on what we've outline in the campaign details.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
