"Orphaned Art Films" is a fundraiser for the money needed to finally complete and make available for viewing 9 of my short 16mm art films which have been sadly and unfairly languishing in a yellow suitcase for the last few plus years because I lost access to both the equipment and funding necessary to complete them.
All of these unique films originate on 16mm celluloid and all but two have ever made it to an exhibit worthy format (*one that did showed at the Pompidou Museum in Paris!) which would allow them to be presented at a quality level respectful of their origins. This Kickstarter would allow for the finishing audio work (sound mixing and scoring) and professional transfer (at a lab w/exposure and color adjustments) of these beautiful short movies to an archival High Definition video format (2K or 4K depending on lab chosen)...and possibly (depending on the sympathies of the chosen laboratory) even some 16mm/Sound exhibition prints.
*The jovial approach taken in presenting this project is done so in effort to make this often unfamiliar film genre more accessible. These films and the importance of their completion I take very seriously as I consider them to be the purest and most important films I've made in regards to the subject of 'metaphors for the human condition.' What could be called 'abstract representation' within the medium of cinema, these short 16mm films all attempt to symbolically reference and investigate the social and psychological themes/patterns underlying acts of human 'endeavor' and 'awakening'. These films hold special value in that they are inspired and uncompromising collaborations...they are, in essence, what I consider to be true examples of unencumbered 'film art' and I believe, stories of vital importance that will have the opportunity to exist as intended and be shared.
With historical value for the predominantly Milwaukee, Wisconsin art scene from which they came as well as being worthy contributions to a long lineage of 'experimental narrative' filmmaking, these short films serve as both archives and valuable contributions to the increasingly uncommon world of celluloid based cinema. It's the responsibility of films of this nature to take the chances traditional approaches to cinema cannot often afford. Cinema is a young medium and one whose promise and boundaries should not be assumed as limited to the predominant formulas which are often implemented to support the high financial cost of their productions. There are always new, exciting directions to take and these films courageously test those waters.
Upon completion, both myself and the numerous artists involved with these productions will be overcome with gratitude as the films will be, at last, available on a limited release DVD compilation, and will GO ON TOUR and be screened/exhibited in theater and gallery venues throughout Los Angeles and Milwaukee...(and very possibly other worldly places too)! These movies will have the lives they've always deserved and the freedom they previously only dreamed of...and they will have YOU to thank for it. Note: They will also likely be made available online to some degree.
Thank you for reading,
*All of the films are not represented in the Kickstarter video for this project and the reference images seen are of the low-resolution work prints and home made transfers. i.e. the poor quality versions I'd like to finally make 'high quality version' of.
