Hi there! My name is Carol Es and I’m an artist from Los Angeles, California.

I am trying to raise funds for my 2015 solo exhibition that will include mixed media paintings and an installation component.

The idea behind my project requires a 10 day stay in the high desert so that I may gather preliminary documentation while meditating on the Torah and Kabbalah, bringing viewers along with me on a personal exodus.

If I seem uncomfortable on this video above, it is because I AM! I did the best I could, but I couldn't help it... I revealed what a humongous dork I truly am.

Humongous dorks UNITE!

Background:

Being raised with both Jewish and Christian beliefs, you might guess that I have struggled with dichotomy.

I also grew up in the apparel industry, working alongside my Christian father as a pattern cutter in downtown Los Angeles. It's no wonder that the materials from the garment manufacturing trade crept into my artwork as a type of redemption. However, I still identified with being a Jew. I honored my mother by arranging the garment patterns into Hebrew letters in some of my paintings.

I did this sort of work from 2007 until the summer of 2009 when my mom died because of complications in having Lewy Body Dementia. This was just only eight months after my father passed away from Congestive Heart Failure. Needless to say, I didn't feel much like painting – not in reference to my parents anyway – so I took a turn and created a completely different body of work called “Dan.” (Read the full story of Dan HERE!)

How Much is that Dan in the Window?
How Much is that Dan in the Window?

It was a year or so after that when I began to slump. I wasn't happy with the gallery I was working with, I hadn't been selling, and I wasn't all that interested in the work I was making. I needed new inspiration.

And then I remembered: Joshua Tree.

In 2010, I was given a project by Chance Press to do an Artist’s book. I decided to take 10 days and do it in Joshua Tree. I wound up renting a secluded house that just so happens to butt-up against the National Park. The house came with a detached artist’s studio, and it was not only silent and meditative, it was life-changing. I know, impossible to find such a thing, right? Well it’s out there.

This was the best 10 days of my life, and It was where I created the book, Scribbles in a Sandstorm, along with a few other special pieces, like Dan Practice, Everything, More of Everything, Cemetery Party, Ventures Through Life, and We are all in this Together. That’s a lot of stuff in 10 days!

Now, fast forward to last February. I finally left my gallery of eight years, and it was then that a whole new world of ideas opened up for me. I became more interested in the abstract and was able to create a new body of work entitled,This.

Six months later, I was picked up by an exciting and wonderful new gallery called, Shulamit, and now I feel freer than I have in ages! They have slated the spring of 2015 for my next solo show and at long last, I know exactly what I want to do for this show. That’s where you come in – my loyal patrons and supporters.

- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -

My Gallery

I love my gallery! They totally support this project, so let me tell you a little bit about them.

Shulamit Gallery engages Angelenos through cross-cultural exhibitions and programming. They feature artwork by both emerging and established artists, and support work that is aesthetically innovative, socially engaged, and that fosters dialogue. They view the artist as cultural ambassador.

Devoted to building bridges between regional and global community, Shulamit Gallery focuses on the Middle East with a special interest in Israeli, Iranian and Jewish artists. They are deeply rooted in the Persian value of mehman navaz, meaning hospitality. In Hebrew, this term is expressed as hakhnasat orchim.

The gallery is a place where people from diverse communities are welcomed, where the community can meet and converse. The women who run the gallery, provide artwork that inspires curiosity, celebrates similarities, and shares differences. The gallery's programming is uniquely special in how it explores the role of art and culture in assimilation, acculturation, personal identity, and the shifting of geographical boundaries - and in how racism and religious persecution negatively impact our society. Shulamit Gallery strives to use art as a platform to create a more inclusive and hospitable future.

How many other galleries do you know that have a vision such as that?

I have been given the whole gallery space PLUS the project room for my solo show and I can not tell you how honored I am to be exhibiting there. -- This is my first solo show in five years!

- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -

Preliminary Stuff:

In the 10 days I spend out in Joshua Tree, I will be on a strict regimen, gathering photographs, sketches, DV footage, written documentation, Torah study, and kabbalah meditation, as well as keeping a daily blog that will become part of a larger website on ExodusJoshuaTree.com.

My plan is to have a “wake up” routine that includes walking my dog, Gemma, and then going into the studio to meditate on a single letter of the Hebrew alphabet using Channels of Creative Consciousness by Rabbi Yitzchak Ginsburgh, then turning to my sketch book to write and draw.

Sketches
Sketches

I have a little process for my sketchbook that I don’t exactly want to bore you with, but I will be revealing it through the blog posts as I go along.

I will be leaving Joshua Tree with all the preliminary artwork that goes into the installation part of the exhibition. I will also be creating some watercolors for some of you guys too, that is, if this thing gets funded of course.

After I’m done with all the sketching and journaling business, I’ll be back outside with my DV cam -- first creating the day’s diary entry, and then exploring rock formations and taking stills - paying close attention to contour and line. These photographs will be reference material for my paintings. See how this is working out so far?

Then, at the end of every day, I will make a blog entry on the website as everything unfolds. I will keep you all on the edge of your seats, I will.

- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -

The Paintings:

After these 10, wonderfully intense, invigorating, spiritual days, I will go back to my studio in Los Angeles and begin painting a new body of work. I am so excited, I feel like peeing myself just thinking about it!

All joking aside, I am a disciplined and committed painter, and I take my work very seriously. These paintings will take a bit over a year to construct.

I’ll be using hand-cut patterns just like I did in ye olden times when I worked with my dad in the manufacturing industry. And I will be arranging these shapes to resemble Hebrew letters. This will be my background.

The foreground of my work is entirely dependent upon my Joshua Tree experience. That is why those 10 days are so important. This time, however, I’m going for nature, which is something entirely new for me in my painting process.

I couldn't be more excited about exploring this in my work!

The painting sizes will range from very small (12 x 12 inches), to as large as 60 x 80 inches, and I will be working on canvas, birch panels, and paper too. (Woo hoo!).

- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -

The Installation:

In the Project Space of the gallery - a separate room about the size of a small garage  - I will create an installation that will resemble the working spaces I have been engaged in all along.

This space would act as the artist's sacred area that the viewer is allowed into. It will give the viewer a full window into the process of how these paintings were created, and the materials that were used.

These items will be strategically placed into the room in sections, as “mini” work stations, like a kind of assembly line. And all reference materials that I've used will be displayed around the circumference of the room at eye level.

Station 1: a camping tent large enough for viewing my DVD films of Joshua Tree.

Station 2: a painting in progress and being sewn on an easel - since I incorporate sewing into my work.

Next to the easel is a rolling cart, complete with brushes, paint and mediums. Drawers are open to expose supplies. Brushes are on the top of the cart in coffee cans, etc.

Station 3:  a long table with pattern making supplies and tools. Some patterns are made, some are in-process of being created, and some are left to show how the tools are actually used during the process.

Station 4: a drawing table with preliminary sketches in various states of completion with open sketchbooks for viewers to flip through and draw in.

Station 5: a meditation and reading station with a meditation chair and books left open (or stacked) for viewers to read.

Most importantly, I am going to post some of YOUR personal stories too!

I am asking for papers from people like you, to paint, draw, photograph, or print their own ideas of what a "personal exodus" means to them. These papers will be going into the installation all around the walls. Isn't that neat-o?!

Okay, I will also clearly make note that this is a participatory installation! In most exhibitions, where viewers are told, "Do not touch," here they will be encouraged to! Flip through the sketchbooks, make your own sketch, sew on the canvas, sit in the chair and read the Torah, sew into the canvas that will be on the easel that already has holes in it with guides for them to sew through, but they will be encouraged to go off the guides and make their own design with pin holes... hard to explain, but it will be a Yoko Ono sort of experience.

If I could exchange you believing in me with a reward as valuable as that, I would. Instead, you will have to settle for bits and pieces of ME, which is my art. In Closing:

However you decide to support the project, I promise you my art and my love, and my appreciation.

I am very grateful if you have actually read all of these words. Thank you so much for considering my project, and for your belief in me no matter how you support my endeavor.

Risks and challenges

My MAIN focus for this show are the *paintings.*

Next up is the *video* I create for the installation component that will show inside the tent.

Depending on HOW the installation fits into the project space - size wise and aesthetically - there might be a call for editing out some of the items in my original idea.

The installation can morph, change, expand, or contract. Some elements might work stronger than others.

These are creative changes that I want to allow into my process, organically, in order to present the BEST exhibition possible.

I am hoping that my supporters will have my back, be patient, and know that I will be updating them every step of the way.

I intend to make several visits to the gallery, and the project space, and keep my plans and ideas as transparent as possible via the project website.

So please, bear with me over the course of this one year project! :)

The gratitude, the link, the bracelet, PLUS a "Dan Invite Card." These were originally created to invite VIPs to my last solo show called, "It's Mostly About Me and Much Less About You." Handmade with a hand-cut, felt Dan in various colors, he is hand-stitched around his edge, as well as his mouth, with colored grommets for eyes, these last eight greeting cards will be blank inside and live inside of a see-through, velum envelope.

The gratitude, the link, the bracelet, PLUS an original, 12 x 9 inch Space Pen sketch, torn directly out of my Drum set sketchbook. This would be within the last 25 pages of this VERY sacred book where some of my most IMPORTANT ideas for my paintings have come from. These drawings come directly from my mind to the paper, stream-of-consciousness, without any plan whatsoever. They are as genuine as they come.
