The Homecoming Project uses visual journalism to address key issues affecting military and veterans returning from war.

Our Mission:  THE HOMECOMING PROJECT is a public service campaign using visual journalism and media to raise awareness of veteran issues related to war and combat trauma.

The Facts:  US military service members are returning from Iraq and Afghanistan with wounds of war including Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI). Throughout 2010 - 2012 the U.S. military lost more service members to suicide than it did to combat related deaths in Iraq and Afghanistan combined. In 2012, the suicide rate among service members increased by 16% and is currently the highest it has ever been in recorded history - *currently, 22 US veterans commit suicide each day.

What We Do:  Through visual journalism The Homecoming Project 1) provides support for the veteran community at a grassroots and media level, 2) creates awareness on veteran issues through our educational programs, 3) and supports resources and advocacy groups who offer aid to the veteran community. The Homecoming Project's image collection and exhibitions are composed of iconic imagery photographed by award-winning photojournalists and contributed works from military artists, photographers and writers.  This collection is then used to educate the public on combat trauma while providing an outlet for military communities to share their stories with the world.

Our History:  From 2011 - 2013 The Homecoming Project participated in over 30 exhibition platforms and educational programs in the US and in Europe, bringing awareness on issues related to US military / veterans including PTSD, TBI, substance abuse, domestic abuse and suicide to hundreds of thousands. The Homecoming Project exhibited creative works in public places such as city parks, schools and galleries, and hosted events on veterans issues including panel discussions, artist talks, and workshops.  We have partnered with non-profits, and continue to raise funds to support The Homecoming Project’s mission.

Awareness Through Media And Veteran Advocacy Groups: The Homecoming Project has been featured in TIME, Newsweek, The New York Times, NBCnews.com, Marie Claire, NPPA, and CBS.com; The Homecoming Project has also supported a multitude of veteran advocacy groups with visual installations including The David Lynch Foundation's Operation Warrior Wellness, Hope For Heroes, The Samaritan Center, Heroes Night Out, and Brook Army Medical Center's Mental Health Unit. In 2013 The Homecoming Project partnered with Story Corps' Military Voices Initiative in a joint mission to record veterans' stories for the National Archive at the Library of Congress.

Additionally, The Homecoming Project has been featured at The Museum of Fine Arts Houston, The Houston Center For Photography, The Northlight Gallery, Tilt Gallery, The Third Floor Gallery and FotoVisura Pavilion, United Photo Industries, The LOOK3 Festival, The Association of Texas Photography Instructors Annual Conference, Louisiana State University, San Antonio University, The Wisconsin News Photographers Association Annual Conference, The New York Photo Festival, and Pecha Kucha in Austin.

Our Future Goals:  The Homecoming Project will continue to host educational programs and gain media attention and community support. Starting in 2014, our goal is to build a traveling photographic exhibition that can be displayed outdoors. We already have gained the city of Austin's permission to begin the exhibition in Austin's Butler Park; afterwards, the exhibition will travel to cities across The United States, exhibiting in public spaces. Our goal is to also help bring issues like PTSD, TBI and military suicide to college campuses with large veteran student bodies, and to create campus forums where these topics can be addressed.

The Homecoming Project is empowered and fueled by veterans, their families, and community members who continue to support and believe in our mission.  Please support our campaign so our mission can continue!

Risks and challenges Learn about accountability on Kickstarter

Different potential risks and challenges that might come with my project are 1) the length of time and manpower needed to process and send out Kickstarter rewards and 2) gaining permission for exhibition installation in public spaces. I plan to tackle these potential obstacles by 1) gathering a group of volunteers who will help me process the Kickstarter rewards in a timely manner and 2) pace my project with an outline that includes deadlines so that I can allow enough time for gaining permission and access to carry the project out.
