About Erin Murphy Knits
Actress Erin Murphy, best known for playing Tabitha Stephens on the classic sitcom Bewitched, is now an alpaca rancher! Hey Kickstarter, I'm sure the last thing you're thinking about in the middle of summer is hand knit accessories. But the goal of my campaign is to launch a winter 2012-2013 collection and your rewards will arrive before holiday gift giving time!
What started as a type of "pet therapy" to encourage language for our little boy with autism turned into a business: Erin Murphy Knits. I was looking for a business that was kid-friendly & eco-friendly, utilized 100% renewable resources and would help support the local economy. This led me to alpacas.
We have alpacas in every color on our small California Ranch, ranging from white, fawn, black & the rarest shade of grey. Alpacas are a very eco-friendly animal. They are very easy on the environment, and no chemicals are used in the processing of our yarn. Once a year our alpacas are sheared. It doesn't hurt them and without it they would die from the heat. The fiber is then washed, carded, and spun by hand. Most items that you see for sale that are labeled "alpaca" are either wool/alpaca blends or nylon/alpaca blends with a very low percentage of alpaca. Erin Murphy Knits uses only 100% alpaca fiber.
100% Raised & Made in the USA
Very few people in the United States are familiar with the benefits of 100% alpaca fiber. Alpaca is a luxury fiber, extremely soft like cashmere. Since alpacas have no lanolin, their fiber is hypo-allergenic. People who don't like the itch and heaviness of wool will love alpaca! Also, since the fiber is hollow, it's extremely insulating and will keep you warm in winter & cool in summer. Alpaca is naturally water resistant & fire resistant. Alpacas are from Peru & Chile where their fiber was used for centuries to make garments for royalty. Hand knit alpaca items become cherished family heirlooms. People frequently tell me that knitting is a lost art. Most people aren't willing to take the time to create an item completely by hand. That's what makes Erin Murphy Knits so special. We raise the alpacas, we process the yarn and we knit the finished items.
With the help of Kickstarter and great people like you, I'll be able to develop & expand the Erin Murphy Knits brand and complete a Winter/ Holiday 2012-2013 Collection. The collection will include not only hats (the only item we currently have available for sale) but also scarves, baby sets, felted soaps and woven rugs. We'll also be able to get a portable corral & supplies so we can bring the alpacas to school, hospital & boutique visits.
I tried to come up with a variety of fun rewards that would appeal to everyone from the casual Bewitched fan to those interested in owning luxurious, handmade alpaca items.
Your support is greatly appreciated!

A Note to My International Backers
One of the advantages of being on a TV show that's on in over 100 countries is that I have friends all over the world. Erin Murphy Knits would be happy to ship internationally. I wish I could ship for free, but I'm not quite there yet! There will be an additional $10 charge for international shipping on all rewards.
I'd be happy to answer any questions about Erin Murphy Knits or alpacas.
Feedback is always welcome!
With the help of Kickstarter and people like you you, I'll be able to create a 2012 Winter Collection!
Changing your backer amount is easy: Visit the project page and click “Manage Your Pledge.” Enter a new amount in the pledge amount box. Note that you are not adding to your existing pledge; the amount you enter will be the total amount collected if the project is successfully funded. A flaw in the Kickstarter system allows you to only choose one reward, if you would like to claim two rewards (example- autographed photo and scarf), you could pledge the amount of those combined items ($35 + $60= $95), then send me a Kickstarter message that you'd like to receive both rewards. Thank you for supporting the Erin Murphy Knits Alpaca Project!
