The idea for this Kickstarter came to me about an hour ago. This rainy afternoon, my bored toddler and I colored a large impromptu racing game board we then played a simple turn-based game with using his Hot Wheels™/Matchbox™/assorted 1:64 scale cars and a 6-sided die. He loved playing with it more than pretty much any other board game we own. And then it occurred to me I'd love to do a really nice, cleaned-up illustrated version with better codified rules I could share with others to use with their own cars and 6-sided dice. It then further occurred to me that it would be a hilarious thing to Kickstart.
This Kickstarter will basically fund me drawing a huge (approx. 24x36") detailed, black & white race track game board you can color with your kids, which I'll then give you as a hi-res PDF you can print either on a large format printer (this is cheaper than you think; about 25 cents/sq ft at most places) or tiled on your home printer (I'll include it pre-tiled so you don't even have to figure this out). Cars obviously not included: this is a new way to play with those Hot Wheels™ you're always stepping on!
This Kickstarter is by my own admission kind of a joke: you don't usually plan a product & funding campaign and then launch it in an afternoon. But! my ability to fulfill it if folks are interested is not a joke: I'm Erin Mehlos, a professional illustrator and comic artist (Next Town Over, Hell's Corners, Poor Wayfaring Strangers, etc). I have two successfully funded, successfully fulfilled Kickstarter comics projects under my belt. I'm also working on a third as of this writing, and if it wasn't obvious I'm also somebody's mom.
Time is tight but I'd love to make this -- largely to gauge interest in a potential physical, printed version. I'd love to dip a toe into making board games I could share with my kid before he's too old to hang out with mom.
Games are awesome: they help teach counting, turn-taking, and this game is extra awesome because it uses a child's own treasured race cars and is a bit of a DIY project you can do with him/her/them!
STRETCH GOAL - $600: I'll add a [hopefully] gorgeous, fully painted, full-color version!
STRETCH GOAL - $1000: I will draw some cute cars to work as game pieces in the absence of little 1:64 scale toys, which are obviously not included.
STRETCH GOAL - $1200: I will add a cute DIY spinner you can easily construct to use in place of a 6-sided die.
STRETCH GOAL - $2000: Oh my I dunno if I'm prepared for this to be this successful. I'll ... do a second game board to race your plastic horses on?
Thanks for checking this out, guys! I hope you'll play along!

Risks and challenges
There's not much risk here. The rewards are digital and immune to logistics issues, I'm a veteran illustrator and crowdfunder, and this DIY racing-game was extensively playtested by my 3 year old. The main reward tier is also like $1 so I mean. You can take the hit.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
