Poor Wayfaring Strangers is an anthology of frontier fantasy shorts created by six independent artists. The book will feature seven stories totaling 100+ pages, printed in full color.
Fittingly, a collection spotlighting the frontier as a setting also celebrates the new: many, if not all of us, tried something new in our creation of these stories. For some it was a new genre, for another a new art tool, for some a new format, for many the challenge of one more side project!
We are a small but diverse and multinational group of independent comics creators. I'm Erin, an Eisner-nominated comic artist and the mother of a young son. I live in Wisconsin, USA, and my husband's out of work as of January 27th, 2016, so I'm lowkey hopeful this Kickstarter more than breaks even.
Our excellent posse, and some work you may already know us for:
Before Poor Wayfaring Strangers I [Erin] successfully Kickstarted the first volume of my comic Next Town Over. I did my research, calculated my costs. And then ... the USPS drastically raised international shipping rates in the interim. Twice. The container the books were shipped overseas in was flagged for a random customs inspection, costing the importer (me!) a wholly unforeseen and indisputable $800. Amazon was kind of jerky to me about stock up requests, killing my meager profit with even more shipping costs, such that I was forced to stop selling through them. It took me a long time to break even on that book because of unforeseen costs, never mind paying myself for time spent creating the comic, and the comic was a lot of work, but it's easier to short change yourself than your friends. Poor Wayfaring Strangers is the work of 6 people, who I'd very much like to pay a little something for their time. So roughly $5K to print books + roughly $5K to pay contributors (and myself, this time!) + $2.5K to cover postage, an ISBN, assorted other costs = $12.5K.
For every additional $1000 pledged over the fundraising goal the story artists involved will get a $100 bonus in addition to their built-in rates, up to $1000:
$13.5 K - All Artists Receive $100 extra
$14.5 K - All Artists Receive $200 extra
$15.5 K - All Artists Receive $300 extra

$17,000 - All Kickstarter copies of PWS (and ONLY Kickstarter copies of PWS) will be rarified with a nifty bookplate
$20,000 - Another short comic will be added to the book by productivity rockstar Gustav Carlson
$25,000 - Erin will draw yet another [short] short for inclusion in the book
Thanks also to my sister Cate Mehlos, without whose help there would be no video!
Risks and challenges
With one successfully funded and fulfilled Kickstarter under my belt already, and all the stories to be included in Poor Wayfaring Strangers already finished, the greatest risks are always-possible printing and shipping delays.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
