About this project
We know this thing's a lot to read, but if we're asking for your support we think you deserve the whole story...
How We Started.
We got together over the Internet. Having been introduced by a mutual friend while Eric was in England recording with his former band and Gio was in his bedroom in California making beats for artists in the East Bay hip hop scene.
We began collaborating via email, passing music and vocals back and forth and we finished our first song before we'd met in person. Luckily, when we met we fell in love instantly. We released our first EP, Scrapbook, which Alternative Press Magazine called "A Whimsical Masterpiece."
We were off to a good start, but it wasn't until we released a song called Very Busy People whenthings really started taking off for us. The biggest radio station in San Francisco, Live 105, began playing the song and invited us to perform at their annual festival, BFD... So our 6th time on stage was in front of 3,000 screaming kids singing along with every word. That same week, satellite radio station Alt Nation debuted the song in their top 17 countdown... We jumped onto a speeding train back then and we haven't slowed down since.
Coming Full Circle...
Being a band that started online, it's only fitting that now, we're turning to the Internet for help in creating our second full length album, Hush.
We've had a lot of highs and a lot of lows through our years as a band, we owe most of our highs to you guys, our friends and fans - We owe almost all of our lows to the music business, more specifically record labels.
We believe closing the gap between bands and fans is the future of music, and traditional record labels have no place in that future. So we are super excited about our Kickstarter campaign because success here is going to allow us to release this album our way. If we've got our own money for the project we can do things how we want to. We'll be able to hire the agents and publicists we want to hire, we'll be able to make the artwork we want to make, we'll make the album we want to make with nobody standing in our way.
We've got a lot to prove with Hush, and we're glad we have you to help us make it all happen.
If we raise enough money here, we'll be able to handle our entire to-do list; from recording, mixing, mastering, mass producing and distributing our music, all the way to the marketing and promotion and finally, hitting the road to support the album!
Even though there's so much to do, we've set our fundraising goal to the bare minimum, just enough to properly finish and mass produce the album.
As you know, it's all or nothing when you're running a Kickstarter campaign. That means if we raise $29,999 and fall short of the goal, we don't get a dime. So we need your help! Of course we need you to become a backer at any level you can manage, but just as importantly, we need you to tell everyone you know about what we're doing here! Click the like button on this page, post links to this campaign on your Facebook and Twitter, show all your friends this project and don't let up until the campaign is over, that's how we're going to make this project a success. We've got a pretty cool story here, this chapter should be fun!
Say You Want A Revolution...
We've learned a lot about how the machinery of the business works. And, like they say, you've got to learn the rules before you can break them... We are fortunate enough to have a lot of 'the right people' who believe in us just waiting to back us up when this album is done, so all we need is the budget to put our plan into action.
We're not really to start a fight between us and record labels, we're just dead set on leaving them behind. If more bands are able to fund their careers through their supporters and fans, labels are going to have to start treating bands better or they're just going to go out of business. Like we said in the video above, we could easily get another record deal, but that would just mean putting our band, our lives, in the hands of people who are less passionate about our music than we are... people who are so worried about keeping their own jobs that they couldn't possibly have our best interests in mind, much less encourage us to be artistically adventurous.
Just A Bit More Backstory...
We released our first full length album, Get Sharp on our own label back in 2010. We had every intention of staying independent, but we were constantly pestered and tempted by record labels - We know that would be a dream come true for most bands, but to be completely honest, it was kinda scary. They were calling and emailing every day, they were taking us out to dinner, flying us to crazy meetings in their offices in New York and LA... Guess we ended up losing our bearings and they eventually convinced us we needed the help of a label to take the band to the next level.
Despite making a careful choice when it came time to sign a deal, the record company ended up with really didn't do any of the things that we all agreed to.
They didn't properly promote the singles, they didn't pay for music videos or touring and they only shipped the physical album to a handful stores. We couldn't even find our CD right here in San Francisco. That's just embarrassing.
When we were independent, using digital distribution company TuneCore, the album was available worldwide on iTunes, Amazon, Spotify and more... But get this, after partnering up with the label it was only available online for people in the United States and Canada. Getting signed actually shrunk our reach.
Needless to say we eventually left the company completely disappointed. And even though we recorded and independently released the album a full year before signing with them, they still own the rights to that music for 14 years. Our songs don't belong to us. In other words, if we want to let a friend use one of our songs in a student film, we'd have to ask our ex-label for permission (Imagine calling up an ex for a favor... pretty awkward!)
We could go on and on forever about why nobody should sign to a record label these days, but we're not here to run a negative campaign :) We're here to partner up with likeminded people who believe in independent art, people who respect an artist's right to create what's in their heart.
Kids Vs. Zombies. The Epic Battle.
We know our fans understand who we are, they know how hard we work, they know their money will be spent wisely and creatively - And if you've just stumbled upon us while browsing Kickstarter projects, let us explain a little more about how the two of us work...
When it came time to make our first music video, Internet Killed The Video Star we aimed high. We wrote the story out ourselves and found a great director... The video included nearly 50 crazy looking zombies, tons of special effects and multiple shooting locations. We even hand-made an arsenal of cardboard weapons - The best part was, we managed to do it all for less than most bands spend on catering at their video shoots. (you can check out the video below.)
The zombie video has over a million views on YouTube now, but back when it only had a few thousand, MTV came calling! They said they loved what we had done and asked if our label had submitted it to them. When we told them we weren't signed, they were amazed and probably even more excited to help out. They played the video in its entirety a number of times and featured us for a whole week on a program they called PUSH. They also used our music in a bunch of their shows...
We both grew up watching MTV, so seeing them play the video we made for less than 500 bucks was one of the most surreal moments of our lives!
This Is The Future...
By the time we were ready to make the video for The Future, we were signed to the label and assumed we'd get a healthy production budget so we decided to go even bigger than we had for Internet Killed The Video Star... We wrote a script calling for even more elaborate special effects, crashing a time traveling Delorean into a Porsche, tons of costumes and actors, plus massive explosions. We had our sights set for an epic video and when we submitted it to the label, they said, "No... It's too dark and violent and besides, it'll be way too expensive..."
We were shocked, but, defiant and determined, we decided to make the video anyway, on our own dime.
Of course the next step was a conversation between the two of us that started with "if we're a signed band, why are we having to choose between paying our rent or making a music video?" and ended with "the breakup call" with the label...
The moral of the story is that the video for The Future is just as dark and serious as the lyrics of the song are, and that's how it had to be. We're more proud of it than anything we've done to date.
It Comes Down To Who We Are, And Why We Need You.
The integrity of this band is so important to us. In the end, being proud of ourselves and what we've made together is all we really need in order to be happy. We're not in this to be mega-rich superstars, fame isn't what motivates us. That's not why we do this.
We're just shooting for middle class. We're artists first, but we're also two guys running a small business. Almost every dollar we make playing live shows and selling our music goes right back into the band. If you've ever been in a band you know there's always something to pay for, from buying equipment to all kinds of insurance, shooting music videos, fixing the van and on and on...
We Are Proud To Be Partnering Up With You.
When you become a backer of this campaign, you're showing your support for a great new way of doing things. This really is the future of music. If we can raise enough money through this campaign to release this album the right way, meanwhile our songs still belong to us and we always have complete creative control, how could we ever go back to the way things were before?
This project means freedom for us. It means that in the end, we will be proud each decision we make, we will be proud of everything we do. And we'll have you to thank for all of it.
We've come up with a great list of rewards for our backers, but if you think of something you'd like to see added to the list, let us know. We want this to be a collaborative process from start to finish.
It starts with you... And it never ends.
When you see our new album in the iTunes store or at your local record shop, when you hear a song from Hush on the radio, you'll know you played an integral part in the whole thing.
Every note of each song will be a celebration of what's possible when enough people get together and believe in the power of the independent spirit.
You'll have proof that you helped make it happen. One of the rewards we're offering at a lower donation level is the chance to get an autographed copy of Hush on CD with your name included in the liner notes. This is not something we're making available for anyone but our Kickstarter backers, it's our way of saying thanks. Your name will be right in there with our friends, family and our business team. All backers $25+ will have their name included.
We're so proud of this album so far. We know you're going to love it. We're recording it ourselves in our garage and it's making this thing has been an amazing experience. Like everything we do, we're pouring our souls into this record, it's so beautiful. But enough bragging :) All of backers from $10+ will get a signed copy of the album in some physical form. Backers at the $5 level will receive a high quality download.
Get a framed hand-written lyric, just a certain favorite line or a whole song, it's up to you. Eric will write it, sign it and frame it. Will be on varied papers, with varied pens and mostly vintage frames of varying sizes.
This exclusive photobook is the best of our photos, pictures shot by Eric and Gio - from the stage to the studio, around the world and at home. It's the perfect behind-the-scenes companion piece to the new album and it's only available to our backers. Hardbound and beautifully printed. Each copy will be hand numbered and autographed. Print limited to the number of backers at this level, no additional books will be printed after this project concludes.
Once the album's done we're going to throw an exclusive invite-only listening party to celebrate! It's going to be us, our friends and family and our backers. There will be plenty of time to hang out, take pictures, hug and dance our asses off while we blast Hush as loud as the speakers will allow. There's gonna be food and drinks and of course, in typical Limos fashion, we'll do a DJ set late into the night.
We love getting things in the mail. (PO Box 671 Campbell, CA 95009-0671) And we know lots of other people love it too, so we're setting up a mailing program just for our backers! We'll be creating a Limos Comic Book written and illustrated by both of us and it's only going out to the mail club. Plus you'll receive the new Limos fanzine, a collection of studio notes and scribbles, tour photos and more. cuz having just digital stuff is no fun! We'll be mailing out postcards from the road exclusively to our backers who choose to join the mail club.
Don't forget. Things have changed! You are now the media. Of course we need your help raising the money to meet our goal but maybe even more importantly we need your help spreading the word about this campaign! Post links to this page on your Facebook, Twitter, Tumblr and your blogs, tell your friends, tell strangers, we're in a race now - if we don't reach our goal we get nothing! If we manage to raise more than our set goal, every additional dollar will make more and more possible for us. Thanks again for participating in making our dreams come true.
the cost of shipping is included in the pledge. which is unfortunate for us if you're from any country but the United States - but it's a deal for you. if you feel like adding a little extra money to your pledge to help with that, we would gladly accept it, if you want to leave it as is, that's fine too.
Yes, all pledges over $25 will get their name in the thanks section of the album liner notes in addition to whatever reward it is that they've selected.
Times are tough for a lot of people, we get that. You can still be super helpful by telling all your friends and family about this campaign! Spreading the word can be just as valuable as a donation.
there are a number of creative things you could do in this case! you could hand your cash to a friend who does have a paypal account or a credit card and have the make the donation in your name, you could get a paypal account (www.paypal.com) or and amazon account. OR you could send money to our PO box - which is not recommended just cuz it could go missing and we can not offer any of the Kickstarter Exclusive rewards to people sending money by mail... If it's all too much hassle, we could always use the support online, spread the word about this campaign!
when the kickstarter campaign is over there will be a survey sent out to everyone at or above the $25 level - they'll be asked then which one name they'd like added to the list. If you want more than one name you'd have to donate at the $25 level twice before sept 25th.
We added a new reward just for this - because Kickstarter rules prohibit backing a project twice, you can now select the $50 level reward called "MAKE A DEDICATION..." and you'll be able to add your name plus any other name of your choice to the album liner notes.
I want the POWER OF THE PEN reward, but I just want one particular line instead of the whole song written out - how do I do that?
Power Of The Pen is one of the most unique rewards we're offering because you can really tailor it for yourself. If you want your favorite song written out all the way or you'd prefer a just your favorite Limos quote - Eric will hand write that for you. At the end of the campaign you'll be asked what you'd like done... We're going to be using vintage frames mostly, varied sizes and colors.
I want to go to the listening party, but I spent all my money backing at a higher level, can I still come?
I'd love to have two of the rewards and have the money to donate - but it won't let me get two different things?
the only way to pledge twice is to create a second kickstarter account with a different email address. Then you could do another pledge with that new account. You could also have a friend pledge for you if you wanted to go that route.
yes, you can choose to type in the total amount for both rewards, but select one of them, when the campaign ends we'll send out a survey getting necessary info to be sure everyone gets what they requested for rewards.
easy! just donate at the $25 level, at the end of the campaign we'll double check with you about which name you want in there, yours or someone elses - btw, if you want two names in the credits there's a $50 level that allows you to add two names to the credits!
you can up your pledge the amount equal to both things you want, then you'll get a chance to explain yourself in the survey sent out when the campaign ends.
Find something to do that you can be proud of, look for someone who'll love you as much as you love them. own a dog. fuck a lot. eat good food. do something scary every once in a while, then die :)
