About the Game Design of Warmonger
I liked the idea of the traditional card game War!

• it's easy to learn
• it's quick to play

But I didn't like the game itself...
• you don't get to make any decisions
• nothing new or different happens

So I set out to rework the game and came up with:
Warmonger: The Ultimate Card Game of War!
• I kept it easy to learn by using a lot of game mechanics most people already know -- even people who don't play a lot of games
• The play is is still fairly quick, but the players get to make a lot more decisions, press their luck in battle, and take into account how their friends will play their cards
• The Warmonger cards add all kinds of one-of-a-kind events to give players a power boost and shake things up
• The Blackjack-like combat system makes it easy to create rules for Robot players
• 2, 3, or 4 people can play
• 1 person can play solo by playing against one or more Robot players
• Robot players can be added to games with a few people to add in an unpredictable player

Here's a video where I talk more about the game design:
 https://youtu.be/FKSmila1060

The quick rundown on why you'll enjoy playing your copy of
Warmonger: The Ultimate Card Game of War

  • It's a fun, filler game that comes in a nifty, easy-to-carry tuck box
  • You can quickly teach new people how to play because Warmonger is easy to learn — it's based on the traditional card game War!, but uses a Blackjack-like combat system that's easy to understand and special Warmonger power cards that have their powers written right on the card so there's no time wasted looking things up.
  • There are lots of decisions the player gets to make — taking the risk of turning over another card in combat and when to best play a particular Warmonger card —  and these decisions can be made quickly so the game doesn't bog down.
  • Even when you're down to your last card it is still possible to have a win and then build upon that win to get back into the game.
  • Once a player or two is out of the game, the game quickly reaches a final showdown & determines the winner. Each War takes cards out of circulation and puts them into the casualty pile, which prevents the game from dragging on.
  • There are many different automated Robot players that can be played against solo or added to a game for additional variety.

Watch this!

Here's a two minute video that demonstrates the highlights of how the game plays including the Warmonger cards and the Blackjack-like combat system — acted out with my stuffed animals and using the Halloween Edition cards!

This special Kickstarter Exclusive Halloween edition is the same Warmonger game that people have enjoyed playing, but with all the artwork having a Halloween theme.

Lately, my wife and I have been watching the entire series of Charmed (we're almost at the end of Season 3 - update: Started Season 4!) and having just completed a Warmonger Red, White, and Blue USA Edition this summer I thought I'd see what I could do with some Halloween style graphics. I tried to limit my color palette as much as possible to Orange, Purple, Yellow, Cyan, and Black and see what I could come up with.

I came up with the black cats and zombie hand playing card backs and it all came together when I included the triquetra in the center of the card (did I mention we've been watching Charmed?). Then I worked on some Warmonger card backs and I loved the idea of the Warmonger skull guy staring at the other players while you were holding your cards in your hand in front of you.

Then came making the Warmonger card faces more creepy. I tried a bunch of options, and finally settled on sewing their faces shut. Here's some close-ups:

Then I added a bunch of Halloween imagery to the 8 custom jokers:

To make the game more Halloween themed I changed the Superpower card to a PotionPower card and added a witch's cauldron.

Here I talk a bit about the Halloween Edition:
The tuck boxes are so cute and portable!
Don't you want to have all three?

SOLO PLAY

The Robot cards are a fun way to spice up a game with your friends because each Robot plays differently. They can be formidable opponents and they don't take victory or defeat personally.

Playing solo against a bunch of Robots can be a challenge, and you can play against several different Robots each time to keep the game interesting.

Because of the Blackjack-like combat system of trying to get the highest Battle Score of 21 or less, there are lots of ways to come up with rules for how the Robot players should play. That's why Warmonger comes with so many Robots (there are 16 Robots in the box) -- each is it's own kind of enemy.

In addition to the Robots that come with the game, I'm developing more Robot players that are more advanced and can be downloaded for free as PDF files from the igpay website. These Robots fit on an 8 1/2" by 11" sheet of paper and have more sophisticated rules for how they play.

Here is a full game video of me playing against 3 Robot cards -- The Cheater, The Cheapskate 15, and The Cautious 14. I've included some stuffed animals to represent the Robot cards and I explain everything that's going on with the gameplay as it goes along.

Since this is being printed by DriveThruCards, I've taken advantage of their glueless tuck box design to make a very special INSIDE of the tuck box. Have a look!

This product will be printed by DriveThruCards -- which is both why I can deliver it so quickly and why the printing quality is so high. I've used DriveThruCards for both previous versions of Warmonger and for Dysfunctional Families.

The card specs are:
Premium Stock: 11.6-pt. thickness, 320 gsm black core card stock from French paper manufacturer Arjo-Wiggins. This silk-finish stock is similar to, but superior to, the stock used on popular trading card games. It's slightly thinner for easier shuffling, but dense to give better rigidity and snap than thicker stocks. Finished with a Low-gloss UV coating.

Which means they feel good and have a nice "snap" the way playing cards should.

Here's a review of the game by Logan Chops that gives an overview of the game and demonstrates the gameplay:

First there was the Pack of Death edition (which looks somewhat similar to another product that comes in packs). Then there was the USA Edition.
And now, the Halloween Edition. All of the gameplay is the same, the only difference is the colors and artwork.

These games are only available on Kickstarter and I'm making all 3 versions available during this campaign. When you provide your shipping address, you will also choose which version(s) you want.

Get a copy (or three) for yourself or to give some as gifts.

To see more of what the other versions look like, check out their respective Kickstarter pages:

Warmonger: USA Limited Edition

During this Kickstarter, you can also get a copy of the first game I published on Kickstarter called Dysfunctional Families. It's a game for 3 to 10 players that uses a simple "structured improv" style of asking for cards so that you and your friends will say funny things.

To learn more about Dysfunctional Families, please see its Kickstarter Page.

Everything you need to make your own copy of the full game is available for free download here (note that you'll require 2 decks of regular playing cards with matching backs to put together the 60-card playing card set and then need to print out the Warmonger cards):

http://igpay.com/warmonger-downloads/

There are also advanced robots available as free downloadable content:

http://igpay.com/warmonger-robots/

I do not expect this project to do the kind of volume that would enable massive shipping discounts AND it is shipping from the USA, so the shipping rates are what they are and there isn't anything I can do about them. I also don't have the shipping volume necessary to set things up for dealing with VAT or EU friendly shipping.
That's why there is a free version of the game offered as a PnP. For now, that is the best I can do.

Risks and challenges

This is a small run of a customized edition of Warmonger. My goal is to get some additional exposure for the game and to get more people to enjoy playing it. Hence the low funding goal.

I believe that the best way to promote myself as a game designer and publisher is to get more people playing games that I have designed and published.

Warmonger: The Ultimate Card Game of War is an already complete game and the artwork for this Halloween Limited Edition version is also already complete.
Just like with the USA Edition I offered this summer, as soon as I receive the funds from Kickstarter (2 weeks after the campaign ends) I will be able to order the printing from DriveThruCards.

At basic funding level, the games will ship directly from DriveThruCards to backers.
If I achieve the stretch goal of being able to place a bulk printing order, then the games will all ship to me and I will put them together with whatever extra goodies and package/ship them to backers.

I expect, based on my rapid shipping of the Warmonger USA Edition, that this project will go similarly smoothly. I look forward to having more people enjoying playing Warmonger with whichever edition they choose.
