I got tired of card games where the only funny things said were things pre-written on the cards, so I created Dysfunctional Families.  — Eric Shefferman

-- For 3 to 10 players
-- takes 30 to 45 minutes
-- recommended age 17+

The big thing that makes Dysfunctional Families different from other card collecting games (such as Go Fish!) is that to ask another player for a card you are required to do a simple, structured improv: "I'm looking for [name of card] because ______."

Dysfunctional Families is a memory-based card game for 3 to 10 players similar to Go Fish! but with a touch of adult-rowdiness as you collect families of mad scientists, arsonists, cannibals, and more -- while dealing with additional characters such as social workers and psychics that can interact and change the flow of the game. You want to gather as much information as you can about your opponent’s cards while revealing as little as possible about your own hand.

The making of Dysfunctional Families:

When I started researching card games, I discovered that the history of playing cards themselves is quite fascinating. Long before the current “52 cards in 4 suits Ace through King plus 2 Jokers” standard decks, there were all kinds of unique decks of cards.

One game from the 1800’s was called Happy Families, and I saw that and immediately thought of the name Dysfunctional Families. The original Happy Families game had rather grotesque looking family members, and it made me think that I could do Dysfunctional Families using my own (rather unique) art style.

Traditional Happy Families games relied on the tried and true professions: butcher, baker, candlestick maker, etc. I felt that the game needed a more modern twist and so instead used family professions such as mad scientists, cannibals, and stand-up comics. While creating the basic outline of the game, I realized some of the things that I could add to the original game and thus the “Power People” cards were created -- non-family members who could influence the course of the game such as the Psychic and the Parole Officer.

And now it's finally ready for you to get your very own copy! Just pledge today by clicking one of the rewards on the right side of this page to select it and follow the instructions from Kickstarter!

The Importance of Improv

I'm very proud of the little improv element that I put into Dysfunctional Families. It is simple enough that almost anyone can come up with something to fill in "I'm looking for [name of card] because ______." However, it is still open-ended enough that people can come up with some very funny sentences.

A lot of people who are intimidated by the idea of taking an improv class don't realize that improv isn't taught as a "do everything at once" but rather is taught by breaking out skills as separate little elements to work on individually. Finishing the sentence in Dysfunctional Families is just one type of simple fill-in structure. But working on it can be the first step to expanding into working on other things and then suddenly... BOOM you're comfortable with all kinds of things.

Here's some of the articles I wrote recently about improv:

I'd like to think that playing Dysfunctional Famliies will open you up to all kinds of new verbal facility!

The Final Judgement : Game Review

"Dysfunctional Families is a nice, light little game that works best if you and your friends are just as dysfunctional as the families in the game. It’s guaranteed to make you laugh a lot if you are playing it with the right kind of people and can be played until well late into the night because of its simple core mechanics. If you and your weird / rough / rowdy / dysfunctional friends are looking for a few good laughs while downing some beers on a Saturday night, Dysfunctional Families will guarantee a good time!"

THE ULTIMATE REWARD!
You Are Immortalized in the Game with an AKA!

Yes -- the ultimate gift of immortality can be yours!
And it makes a great gift too!

From now until forever, in every printing of Dysfunctional Families, you will be IMMORTALIZED by having "AKA (your name)" on the card of your choice.

You can use your first name, you can use your full name, you can put a friend's name (Don't be mean with this!) - and on that card an AKA ("Also Known As") will be put on the card with the name of your choice.

Your choice of card is any of the Family cards or Power People cards shown (see up the page a little bit). There will be a listing of which cards have been taken -- as these are FIRST COME, FIRST SERVED and once they are gone, they are GONE!

When you choose a reward level with an AKA, please message me right away to confirm your card choice.

About Me (Eric)

I attended RPI (Rensselaer) and spent a lot of time there using the Calcomp plotter on the mainframe to produce giant Spirographs. I left school and started programming video games on the original Nintendo home system. Since then my life has always revolved around some combination of computers and art.

As my life becomes more and more electronic and virtual, I find that I appreciate low-tech things more and more, especially things that can be enjoyed while hanging out in person with friends. Hence my desire to start a card game business.

With your help

I can bring Dysfunctional Families out into the world and help people everywhere put a little improv into their lives!

Please make a pledge now so that I can make a copy of the game for you!

Risks and challenges

For the game itself:
The artwork is already finished and the game has been playtested and rules revised and I am very happy with the final game.

The short version of the business plan here:
I want to get this game out into the hands of people who can play it and enjoy it. To achieve the low funding goal, I am using DriveThruCards as my primary printing service. They printed the demo and playtesting decks. They can print games one copy at a time as needed. This works for the purpose of getting the game to exist.

The challenge will be to get the number of games ordered to be high enough that I can print with a traditional printer and thus have economies of scale that would permit printing additional copies to put into distribution on amazon.com, etc. (This is the goal of typical Kickstarter campaigns and why they need such a higher funding goal.) At this level, the company has truly "kickstarted" and prints enough of the product that when it has sold out, there is enough profit to do another printing of the product.

I am calling this a QTYONE (quantity one) business plan -- the product is viable even when selling just one copy.

I have more details about the QTYONE business plan here on the igpay website.
http://igpay.com/qtyone-business-plan-dysfunctional-families-kickstarter-relaunch-part-1/

The first time I had Dysfunctional Families on Kickstarter, it was a traditional Kickstarter where I needed to be printing at least 100 copies (preferably more) of the game in order for it to be financially viable.

Now it will work no matter how few or many are wanted (although the more the merrier!).
