Thank you again to everyone who pledged to this campaign. I truly appreciate the support and faith. We raised over $10,000 from 107 backers! However, with only 10 days to go, successfully reaching our goal is just not realistic and so I have decide to end the campaign early. Although there are opinions on either side - run to the end vs. end early - with limited resources, I need to focus time and energy on next steps rather than continue to work on the campaign.
Hindsight is 20/20 - It is amazing how clearly things are after they occur. There are so many things I would do differently on the next crowdfunding campaign. Everything from connecting with the media (bloggers, writers, tech reviewers, etc), to crafting the message, to developing the product further, to outsourcing work to others - the list is long! It was a great learning experience.
You don't know what you don't know - Equally amazing is that although there is an abundance of information and tools on the internet to help you accomplish just about anything (including making your own green-screen for about $12 from supplies at Wal-Mart, check out our awesome video here), they can simply lead you down a path of digging deeper and deeper. Things that seem simple or easy at first glance, somehow can take a life of their own as you get into them. It is incredible to see what it takes to run a successful campaign after you've live through one.
Ultimately, I think it really came down to just one main issue - The product was too early for Kickstarter. Not having products to send to people that would discuss, review, or promote them (media or bloggers or reviewers) really limited the PR options. Also, with just the Grips and no accessories ready yet, I relied on people not only backing this project but agreeing to back future projects in order to get a system that worked for their needs.
I will continue to work on the concept, refine the design, and figure out the best way to get it to market. It might be re-launching on Kickstarter, or partnering with a roof rack company, or taking on an investor. Either way, I will keep you posted. Thanks!
