We have decided to end the campaign early, and focus our resources on next steps. Please check us out online at www.gripracks.com.
The World’s first quick on / quick off roof rack system, allowing you to very easily and safely attach almost ANYTHING to your existing roof rack. From bikes and kayaks, to ladders and lumber, to Christmas trees and rugs - these affordable Grips will help you quickly make full use of your roof rack. And the universal design allows them to work on virtually all factory roof racks. See how Grip Racks was a quick fix on this Road Trip.
Using bungee cords, straps, or traditional bolt-on accessories is time consuming and a real pain! Grips are extremely simple, but effective. Just squeeze the Grips with one hand to attach them to your vehicle crossbar and use the strap to securely hold almost anything to your roof. It couldn’t be quicker or easier.
Shouldn't your roof rack accessories to be easy to install and remove? Don't you want to use your roof rack for more than just a bike or kayak? Are you sure those plastic brackets are going to hold at 70 mph? It's time for a roof rack revolution - Grips!
- One-handed quick on and off design
- Weather-proof (black anodized aluminum construction)
- Universal (fits most cross bars)
- Fine tune adjustment for tightest fit
- Strong, aluminum construction
The rewards are for Pairs of Grips, straps, and hooks. Each Pair comes with two (2) universal Grips and two (2) 10 foot nylon straps with crossbar hooks.
Benefits of Grip Racks' accessories:
- Cost effective - existing accessories are freakishly expensive
- Versatility in how you use your roof rack - more options
- Portability in type of vehicle and roof rack
- Simplicity - less complex system, fewer parts
- Peace of mind that the cargo is safe and secure
- Reliability - accessories can easily be removed when not in use, preventing unwanted theft or deterioration from weather
- Fuel efficiency - accessories can easily be removed when not in use for improved aerodynamics
No more awkwardly balancing yourself on your car while fumbling with small parts, aligning the bolts, then tightening it all up - no more bolt on accessories! Or shoving items into your trunk or back seat that don't fit.
What's so exciting is that the Grips form the foundation of an entire product line of future roof rack accessories. The design intent is that accessories will require just one pair of Grips. Accessories that are easy to use and affordable, and feature the quick on/quick off functionality of the Grips to allow you to conveniently carry lots of other items, such as:
Having used SUV roof racks to transport all sorts of large items (ladders, piping, gutters, molding, rugs, doors, plywood, drywall...) and witnessing other people driving around with things unsafely and inefficiently attached to their roof rack, we decided to come up with a better way. Bungee cords and straps (or duct tape!) or expensive accessories for outdoor recreation are the only current options to attach items to your roof rack - how about something more versatile and cost effective?
We began working on this idea in early 2015 - check out our blog posts if you are really interested in learning more about the process. The idea started with a large, cumbersome rack system which was quickly squashed. It evolved over time into a few prototypes reflecting a more simplified and adaptable design, and eventually, we engaged an industrial design firm to assist in refining the design with goal of achieveing an effortless, multi-functional, economical and safe solution.
You're our Collaborators: You will have a direct impact on the types of accessories we design and produce in the future - we need your input to deliver the things you want.
We're Better Together: The more backers we get, the more leverage and flexibility we will have in finalizing the features and manufacturing resulting in a better product for you.
Discounted Price: Reward amounts are about 10%-20% below MSRP.
Money-Back Guarantee: If you decide you don't like your Grips within 1 month of receiving them (or they don't work with your roof rack), you can return them for a full pledge refund.
We Need You: We've covered the cost of industrial design, legal fees, and prototypes, but we can't get these manufactured without your support. Getting from 0 units to 1,000's of units is a real challenge for new businesses. Economies of scale when manufacturing thousands of units makes many things possible. However, to make a few dozen units still requires a LARGE investment in tooling (molds, dies, etc.) which is a huge hurdle. If we can reach our goal, we can afford to make the initial production run and provide capital to continue to develop the product line.
Many successful Kickstarter campaigns run into major manufacturing and logistical challenges when sourcing overseas. Although there are cost benefits to sourcing overseas, there are so many other challenges to get a product to market that we do not feel it is in our best interest (or yours) to add that complexity to an already complex project. Therefore, we have been working with local midwest manfacturers for our initial production runs. We have begun lining up tool makers, machine shops, and assembly & packaging companies. Our goal is for ontime delivery of a high quality product, which may cost us a little more in the short-term. In order to build a successful and growing company, we are taking a long-term view.
"Someone's sitting in the shade today because someone planted a tree a long time ago." - Warren Buffet
Once the campaign is complete, we will continue to work with our industrial design firm to incorporate Backer feedback into the design. We will then move forward with manufacturing, as well as design of accessories. We expect the accessories to be available in the first quarter of 2017 (available about 6 months after delivery of these Rewards).
After this successful Kickstarter, we will be focused on getting the rewards in your hands and jumping into the design process for accessories - please let us know what you would want to have first. Bike rack? Plywood rack? Kayak strap? Camera mount? Roof bin? Roof bag? Shade awning?

Risks and challenges
Please remember that Kickstarter is not a store and you’re not purchasing a product from an established company. You're pledging support to for a group of individuals who are doing everything they can to build a business from the ground up. The campaign is an amazing way to verify demand, obtain feedback from potential customers, and raise the needed funds to get over the hurdle of the first manufacturing run. In addition to being the first to have access to these products you get an insider's view on the process. That's better than any store.
Manfacturing - While manufacturing a product has become increasingly easier in today's well-connected world, it is still a fascinatingly complex challenge. To best prepare for these challenges, we've been consulting with both successful Kickstarter campaigns and industry experts. In addition, we are focused on sourcing from local midwest manufacturers in order to allow tighter oversight, better quality management, and reduced logistical issues. As we move to manufacturing, there is the possibility that the design or functionality will change (hopefully for the better!).
Product Delays – We have established relationships with local manufacturers, but there is a chance that the production process may take longer than expected, especially if there are many backers.
Though it's difficult to plan for every unforeseen circumstance, we are certain to face unexpected challenges throughout this journey and will do our best to solve them efficiently. We've pinpointed the top partners capable of handling this type of production. We pledge to keep our backers well informed throughout the entire production process and commit to doing everything in our power to deliver without delay.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
