New Stretch Goals!
We only have one week left in the Gettysburg: The Tide Turns Kickstarter campaign. Thank you for your support and for spreading the word. This game is happening thanks to you. However, the fight is not over yet! We have one week left to make a final push and we need your help.
To provide a rallying point for this last week, we've prepared stretch goals as potential targets. These will all improve the app and make the game better for everyone. They include:
$30k - Alternate History Scenario #1: "Stonewall" Jackson at Gettysburg
Would the tide have turned differently if Jackson were at Gettysburg? This scenario will explore the ramifications of this powerful commander's presence at the battle.
$35k - Alternate History Scenario #2: The Cavalry Arrives!
Stuart's cavalry was late to the battle, but what if they had arrived when expected. This scenario will explore that event and what the outcome may have been.
$40k - Alternate History Scenario #3: Hooker Retains Command
What if Meade had not replaced Hooker just before the battle? We will prepare a scenario that explores what may have happened and how the divisions and brigades would have performed.

The alternate history scenarios will allow us to explore new areas while providing additional hours of play for everyone. If the goals are met, the scenarios will be developed and will be released shortly after Gettysburg for free to all users. This is something we have always wanted to do and with the extra support we will be able to do it. We will announce the hidden goals as we get closer.

150 years ago, brave soldiers fought across the battlefield at Gettysburg in one of the most decisive and iconic battles of the Civil War. To commemorate this event, Shenandoah Studio is developing Gettysburg: The Tide Turns, a wargame for iPad and iPhone.
With our first Kickstarter, Battle of the Bulge, we brought you to the climactic moment of World War II. Now, with Gettysburg we will take you to one of the defining battles of the Civil War. We have shown what can be done with area-based wargaming on iPad, now we are tackling another classic genre: hex-based wargaming. Gettysburg will feature the same level of playability and strategic depth that we are known for, as well as the polish and intuitive interface that made Bulge so exciting to gaming veterans and so welcoming to people who had never played a wargame before.
We are coming back to Kickstarter to ask you, our community, for help in making this happen. Gettysburg will introduce a new realm of wargaming to iOS and we will work closely with you to make it the best that it can be.
Designed by Eric Lee Smith, award-winning designer of Victory Games' The Civil War, Gettysburg: The Tide Turns is a turn-based wargame set during Robert E. Lee's invasion of the North in 1863. In this historical game you, the player, control individual brigades, moving, conducting combat, and attempting to outwit your opponent on the field of battle.
You will command a myriad of period units including infantry, cavalry, and artillery. Units vary in strength and morale, and, much like Bulge, your success will depend on how you maneuver your forces and engage the enemy. Gettysburg goes beyond the "you go, I go" turn by randomizing when each division will move. This provides tension, as you must respond tactically as new opportunities present themselves.
The two armies clash across the battlefield in Gettysburg. Combat is both clear and dramatic. When you attack, each unit has the opportunity to fire on the enemy according to its strength and type. The likelihood of scoring a hit depends on the defender's terrain and the tactical position. In addition to weakening the enemy, successful hits can break the enemy and send them running.
In Gettysburg, unit morale represents the unit's training, dedication, and experience. Brigades with high morale can withstand withering fire that would send a lesser formation skedaddling home.
Designer Eric Lee Smith took great effort to ensure historical accuracy throughout the game. Nowhere is that more true than in the game map. Our art department is hard at work developing an innovative map that is historically accurate, offers a period feel, and takes full advantage of the iOS platform. We know seeing the big picture is key to succeeding in strategy games, so we allow you zoom out to see the strategic situation and then drill down to the get a closer look at individual brigades and their actions.
With Gettysburg, we deliver an accessible, beautiful, and informative experience that captures the fun and intensity of traditional wargaming transformed especially for iOS. Wargaming reborn.
Through our last Kickstarter experience and the six months since Battle of the Bulge launched, it is clear that you, our community, are key to our success. Why This Game Matters
This year is the 150th anniversary of the Battle of Gettysburg, the largest clash of arms ever fought on American soil. Thousands sacrificed their lives, and their sacrifice forever shaped the future of the United States. Gettysburg commemorate this great battle with an historically accurate iOS strategy game integrated with extensive historical commentary, period photographs, maps, and music; an engaging iOS strategy game that also enhances your understanding of battle and the sacrifices made there.

This style is a hybrid of original period maps, modern layout practices and traditional etching techniques such as those found in printed money. In this map we have a combination of mechanical and hand drawn styles with an emphasis on the mechanical. The unsaturated color pallet allows the counters (not present) to stand to out as the primary focus. The goal is a map that is both beautiful and highly technical but also easy to read at a glance.
Hand Drawn Style
In this map we again have a combination of mechanical and hand drawn styles but this time with an emphasis on the hand drawn. The goal of this map is to produce something more closely resembling the period maps while avoiding unnecessary details that might slow down gameplay. This style most closely represents the map a general might have viewed 150 years ago.
This style is the most self explanatory Here we have a traditional bird's eye view that is reminiscent of a contemporary satellite imagery (though it is almost entirely rendered on a computer.) The goal of this map is to enhance a sense of realism while keeping effective and legible terrain lines. This style most closely represents what you would have seen had you been in a hot air balloon over the battle.
Inspired by period maps, newspaper illustrations, other official correspondence, the art team responsible for Battle of the Bulge is hard at work on graphics for Gettysburg. Piles of maps and books litter the office as we define and collaborate on an art style that combines historical feel with digital polish. Check out some concept art below:

About the designer:
Eric Lee Smith is an award winning game designer and veteran of both Simulations Publications (SPI) and Victory Games. He has designed games on many topics and periods, including: Across Five Aprils, The Civil War, The Alamo, and Ambush!. He has also worked as a software designer for over 20 years. In designing Gettysburg: The Tide Turns he brings his experience with Civil War games and software design together to create a new and polished game for iOS.
Risks and challenges
Gettysburg represents a new direction for game development at Shenandoah Studio. This brings with it its own risks and challenges.
Game development is a long and complex process. Unforeseen scheduling delays can occur during development. Shenandoah is an efficient and experienced team, and we will work hard to ensure that development moves along as quickly as possible.
AI development for a game such as Gettysburg is a new field in many ways. Shenandoah Studio attempts to focus on personality as well as difficulty in AI. The AI design will be challenging, but we have the employees to make this happen.
We are confident that we can bring something new to the hex-based wargaming genre, and we are dedicated to delivering the best game possible.
