Press Release

Dedalus has its most ambitious translation programme ever, but to deliver it we need your help. We aim to publish 6 translations a year by women authors between 2018 and 2028, as we celebrate the centenary of women getting the vote and full voting rights ten years later. This is in addition to our regular output of translated fiction. We cover a lot of our translation costs through grants from cultural institutions in the UK and abroad, but we want to do more. We live in tumultuous times and believe that publishing works in translation has never been so important, which is why we're getting extra innovative and creative. For the first time ever we will publish a book in collaboration with our readers. It's simple: by buying the book up front you help us manage our production costs while guaranteeing yourself an advance copy with your name printed in the back as a contributor. Cleopatra goes to Prison is a very special book and Claudia Durastanti an author destined for great things. Help us to help her get the kickstart she deserves.

DESCRIPTION OF THE BOOK

In Caterina, Claudia Durastanti presents us with a Cleopatra for our times - no exotic queen courted by two lovers with the fate of an empire in their hands but a young would-be ballet dancer who works as a cleaner in a down-at-heel hotel. This is the Rome of the underclass, of illegal immigrants, gypsies and sex shops where life is a struggle for dysfunctional families and nothing comes easy, except disappointment.

Every Thursday Caterina visits her boyfriend Aurelio in Rebibbia prison in Rome, where, following a mysterious tip-off to the police, he is being held in custody under suspicion of pimping the strippers in the nightclub he was running. What would Aurelio say if he knew that she went straight from the prison to meet the policeman who arrested him, who is now her lover?

Caterina’s life is difficult and her environment challenging but she is a survivor and takes everything life throws at her without complaint. Caterina is very much a heroine for our times.

DESCRIPTION OF THE AUTHOR

Claudia Durastanti is a writer and literary translator based in London. Her critically acclaimed debut novel Un giorno verrò a lanciare sassi alla tua finestra won the Premio Mondello Giovani in 2010.

Cleopatra goes to Prison is her third novel and her first book to be translated into English.

DESCRIPTION OF THE TRANSLATOR

Christine Donougher is an award-winning translator from French and Italian. Her translations from Italian for Dedalus are Senso (and other stories) by Camillo Boito, Sparrow (and other stories) by Giovanni Verga, The Price of Dreams by Margherita Giacobino, Venice Noir by Isabella Panfido and Cleopatra goes to Prison by Claudia Durastanti.

Risks and challenges

The risk is that if we do not get the funding this book or others we want to publish as part of this promotion of women's fiction cannot appear as we cannot afford the translation costs.
