My name is Eric Kimberlin and I live in Seattle, Washington. I love exploring the Pacific Northwest and sharing photos to Instagram. I'm a silver spoon ring maker and currently studying blacksmithing and knife-making here in the city. Another one of my major passions in life is song-writing. I've been making music for the last decade with my dear friend as The Scene Aesthetic, and more recently Prince of Spain.
Small, beautifully made gadgets have always called my attention. I welcome all things handmade with thoughtful design. For many years I dealt with unnecessary jingling keys everywhere I went. After a long time, and with the help of a few friends, I think we've come up with something that not only solves the jingle but will age and patina beautifully as it's used over time. Not to mention it just feels great to hold onto.
Say hello to...
This little project has been in the works for a few years now. It's seen various prototypes along the way and now it's ready to share with the world. I teamed up with Mike of Tomahawk Portland and Joe of Scout Leather Co. to create the Key Case for Kimberlin Co.
Key Case Leathers— Each Key Case is cut from natural vegetable tanned leather. Chestnut and Midnight colors are achieved by hand-dying each piece using all natural, water-based dyes.
Scout Hook Metals— There are a few different Scout Hook setups to choose from. Each Scout Hook is made from 0.25” thick brass, copper or titanium.
Brass was chosen for its warm gold color, a heavier weight for a solid feel, and it's strong which makes it durable– but malleable enough to let dings and nicks add character through use.
Copper because of the gorgeous patina that will develop over time. It's also heavy in hand, adding a unique personality to each hook.
Titanium because it has excellent corrosion resistance, it's incredibly lightweight– yet exceptionally strong. You almost forget you're carrying a titanium setup it's so light.
The Key Case was designed to compliment the beautiful and simple functionality of the Scout Hook.
- Holds 4-5 keys max.
- Measures: 5.5" x 1.25" x .5"
Here's a look at the 3 Scout Hook metal types: brass, copper & titanium.
- Note: The titanium in the photo has a raw bar finish. We still have a few of these hooks from our prototype batch pre-Kickstarter, but the majority of the titanium hooks will feature a satin finish.
The Key Case XL was designed for those who have a few more keychain items they need to carry with them: a very small USB thumb drive, keychain pocket tool and other accessories.
- Holds 8-10 keys max.
- Measures: 3.85" x 1.25" x .5"
Answer: If you choose any of the 3 tiers with a Key Case + Scout Hook (brass, copper or titanium) you'll be given a window of time to choose the standard size or the XL size once funding is complete. There's no cost difference, just design and function. The standard design was meant to accommodate the Scout Hook's bottle opener feature, where the XL shape doesn't and was meant to hold additional keys on that side of the case. That being said, you can absolutely use either shape with the Scout Hook.
A FREE GIFT: Every backer of the Key Case (standard and XL size) will receive a free 27mm flat brass split ring + a brass wire split ring for attaching anything from keyless entry remotes to OEM car key fobs.
And for those who don't mind spending an extra $25, the Brass Kappa Quick Release by Prometheus is hands down the coolest quick release (not to mention the best made) out there.
A proprietary "canted coil spring" is used to provide a "snap together" action: two pieces, no moving parts, nothing to break and the spring is replaceable if that's ever needed. The spring is manufactured by a company that specializes in only this type of spring. It's commonly used for electrical and mechanical interconnects on everything from heart implants to military electronics to stuff that flies in space. It should be adequate for your house key, keyless FOB, or OEM car key.
- Solid Brass
- 10 lbs detach force
- push to connect
- pull to disconnect
- Custom manufactured canted coil spring
I WANT ONE! HOW DO I ADD IT TO MY PLEDGE?
There will be one really important step after the campaign is over to let us know what leather color your want, your shipping address and a few other things. This will also be the time when you can request multiples (if you want to give the Key Case away as a gift this year for the holidays) and add some special "add-ons" to your cart.
You'll be able to select the Brass Kappa Quick Release as one of those add-ons!
A little reminder to do good each day. *Digital render of actual embroidered patch.
Also for consideration, something wholeheartedly Kimberlin Co. to those who might not need a Key Case.
I started making silver spoon rings in 2010 for my sisters, which quickly turned into a fun hobby in my garage, and then into a full-time pursuit. I have a broad range of silver-plated flatware patterns that I've collected over the last few years for a special project. If you choose this tier, I'll select a pattern at random and craft a 1-of-a-kind spoon ring for you in any size you need. Here are some spoon rings I've made over the years.
The best song-writer accessory ever. Mike of Tomahawk Portland understands how important it is to have a few guitar picks handy at all times. A song-writer himself, he created a truly stunning guitar pick holder that can store about 5 picks. Choose from: natural, chestnut or midnight colors
Introducing a brilliantly simple EDC cable management system thought up by Joe of Scout Leather Co. If you're like me, you enjoy having a pair of headphones or a charging cable with you on the go. Choose from: natural, chestnut or midnight colors.
Once successfully funded, Key Case production will begin immediately. Here's our tentative fulfillment schedule:
- Production: Begins August 1st, 2015.
- Shipping: Early Bird Backers October 1st, remaining backers late October
- Delivery: Should begin arriving in people's mailboxes shortly after!
This project will be fulfilled using BackerKit. It gives backers a chance to better manage their pledge at the end of the campaign. Additional rewards (multiples or add-ons) can be purchased along with being able to update your information if anything changes.

Risks and challenges
Although this is my first Kickstarter campaign, I've backed several incredible projects over the years and have observed lessons about scheduling production, delivery dates and staying true to those who are backing an idea like this.
