EDITED TO ADD STRETCH GOAL #1 - $3800 ShotFox Enamel Pin
Hello everyone, my name is Eric Borden and I'm the writer and creator of Scrimshaw.
First off I want to thank everyone for their support. Over the past couple years we've had a successful run with Alterna Comics, from the Volume #1 graphic novel in bookstores to the effort to bring back newsprint in comic shops and newstands everywhere.
Due to your support we have been able to continue making Scrimshaw and as such we are on to Volume 2 which collects Issues #4 #5 and #6. Which is the very point of this effort on Kickstarter.
100% of the funds raised by this campaign will be used toward the print production of the 120 page graphic novel that continues the Scrimshaw saga.
Dave Mims, Spike O'Laochdha, and myself have worked tirelessly on this book and the adventures contained within. With your help we will continue to bring you all the high seas adventure you can handle.
For those of you not familiar with Scrimshaw please read below. If you're already part of the crew scroll on down to New Horizons and check out what we've got in store for you.
Follow Hans and the crew of the Runaway Horse as they make their way in the New Pacific, a world of ruthless business, uneasy truces, and shifting alliances. A world abided by steel, marked by mutation, and at the mercy of the violent sea. Scrimshaw is a comic series drawn by Dave Mims, written by Eric Borden with Spike O'Laochdha on letters. It tells the story of a possible future. One in which the world has been affected by the effects of global warming, genetic and agricultural manipulation, and all-out war between the so-called superpowers.
The story is a genre-mixing tale of old and new. It is a science and swordplay adventure on the high seas. It’s the story of a loose confederation of characters from the far-flung corners of the world who have come together as a family in order to find their way. With members hailing from Japan, Mexico, New Zealand, Norway, and American Samoa, the crew of the Runaway Horse has a colorful past and an uncertain future.
While it’s a fantasy adventure with a diverse cast of characters, it is also firmly rooted in the real. Issues like global warming, overfishing of the oceans, corporate exploitation, political over-reach, and race relations are tackled head-on. The story also revolves around one of the oldest and most maligned traits that mankind possesses, our ability to make war. Scrimshaw imagines a future that could become very real given the current state of affairs in the world.
For those of you familiar with Scrimshaw you know that the collected graphic novel represents something special due to the Captains Log portion of the book contained within. This is a unique addition to the GN that was not printed in the newsprint editions. In the Volume #1 Captains Log you found schematics of the ship, character profiles for the crew, IADS case files for the villains and even advertisements for businesses that exist only in the world of Scrimshaw.
But due to the overwhelming positive response to the Log we knew we had to up our world-building content game for Volume 2, so we did. You'll still find all the stuff you've come to love, new case files, advertisements, and schematics. In addition you'll find maps of the post ice cap melt world and a 9 page mini-comic featuring Ngaire doing work with her blade.
In case you need more convincing check out some of the things people have said about Scrimshaw.
"the story's about the people caught in the machinations of forces much more powerful than they are, riding the massive winds as does a leaf (had to happen). A multicultural crew whose histories are lovingly detailed in bonus pages creates a whole world to explore for the reader. Every named character has a decent bio, and the detail in the work is truly impressive. This isn't just a couple of cardboard cutouts being tossed across the page; this is a living, breathing world full of real people who will draw you into their story." - Erik Cheski, Fanbase Press
"Scrimshaw #1 quickly strikes its own path with distinctive characters and a desire to consider big issues like the environment and immigration. Unexpected elements of fantasy keep you on your toes. As a fan of overseas adventures, this comic endeavors to provide that and more." - Rachel Bellwoar, That's Not Current
"The future presented by Scrimshaw is really interesting and I love the extensive world building and set up that is presented at the start of this issue. I also really enjoy the diverse assortment of characters working on The Runaway Horse." Katherine, Nerdy Girl Express
Risks and challenges
Art for all single issues is "in the can" as they say. We are wrapping up the remaining Captains Log pages to complete the Volume 2 collected graphic novel. Still there are challenges with bringing any artistic endeavor into being and this is our most ambitious project to date. We're confident that barring any unforeseen circumstances or swift and mighty deathblows to the team, We can deliver Scrimshaw Volume 2 in all it's glory in August 2018 (or before if the printer is swift)Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
