LACKLUSTER WORLD is a 380 page dark satire graphic novel being collected for the first time in this 'Director's Cut' version of the comic book series.
So, what's the story?
Fahrenheit Monahan is an albino man trying to change his world through a combination of journalism and street art all the while fighting off his brother and sister, Kelvin and Celsius, and their extreme attempts to convert him to Christianity.
The movie pitch: FIGHT CLUB meets OFFICE SPACE in PLEASANTVILLE.
It's a dark satire; both a comedy and a drama, but speaks a lot about society. Through the lens of Fahrenheit's street art events, the story pokes fun at consumerism, social acceptance, religion, business, but also tells a serious story about how people and their actions have small and large influences on others.
Where were you the day you died?
LACKLUSTER WORLD asks this question of all its characters. Literally.
After our anti-hero Fahrenheit executes his first vandalistic act stating, "YOU ARE ALREADY DEAD" and gaining city-wide attention thanks to his own crafty manipulation of the media through his writing, entrepreneurial profiteers turn his message message into a product with a branding campaign asking, "WHERE WERE YOU THE DAY YOU DIED?" This becomes the slogan of Fahrenheit's campaign to change his lackluster world.
These guys appear in the book!
It's lackluster. On purpose.
This artwork of LACKLUSTER WORLD is a very deliberate grayscale. When I first wrote it, the story, let alone the title, all but dictated that much. It's a highly stylized, unique look that the book and myself have become well known for.
ABOUT THE BOOK:
I'm unofficially calling this graphic novel the 'Director's Cut' of LACKLUSTER WORLD because I'm putting it through some big changes, but all for the better.
What was originally a 7 issue comic book series totaling 252 pages is now one large volume clocking in around 350 pages. While the overall story has not changed, the first two original issues are being completely restructured and redrawn. Throughout the storyline, I have also injected a lot of new or missing backstory that just never made it into the comic issues. Every page is being digitally re-lettered as well.
Beyond the story, I'm adding about 30 pages of backmatter content to bring the total page count of the entire book up to 380-ish pages. This will include copies of original sketches, script fragments, copies of original character designs, pin-ups from other artists and a swath of other content that I believe will be interesting to anyone that wants to learn about the production of the story and art.
The physical size of the hardcover graphic novel will be 6.5" x 9.5" which is slightly smaller than the original comics' size. The smaller size will make the book more accessible, more travel-friendly and overall just more readable.
All of these adjustments and additions to the original comic material have been in the works for a very long time and now that I am nearing the end, I'm finally launching this campaign to fund the printing of the hardcover book. It is my intention and expectation I will have final artwork to my printer within 30 days after completion of this campaign. THAT MEANS YOU CAN EXPECT TO RECEIVE THIS PRINTED GRAPHIC NOVEL IN SUMMER 2015.
I want to keep this campaign about the book, but we do have some awesome rewards that will interest fans:
Thumbnails of available original art from the original LACKLUSTER WORLD comics are below, but click here to see much larger images of each.
NEW REWARD UPDATE April 13, 2015:
As we near the end of the campaign, I'm adding these three new comics, written by myself, to the campaign as bonus reward levels to help us push closer to our next stretch goal. These comics have nothing to do with LACKLUSTER WORLD, but if you like my work on LW, you'll probably like my work on these comics too. Each of these three comics in a 'Single Serving,' that is a one-shot self-contained story. Personally, I don't think you can go wrong with a single one of them. You can Here's the pitch for each:
PECKING ORDER is a dystopian sitcom following Ritchie, a bioengineered 'sub-human' recently awarded equal human rights, but only to become a pet in the suburbs. 28 Pages. Written by Eric Adams, illustrated by Jason Federhenn, colored by Ricardo Michel. PREVIEW
GOODBYE, WEATHER is a cyberpunk slice-of-life following two aging hackers-for-hire on a job to commandeer a space-based advertising platform. 24 Pages. Written by Eric Adams, art by Jerem Morrow and Eric Adams. PREVIEW
RUMSPRINGA!, is the world's first entry into the exciting AMISHPUNK genre where an Amish family feud escalates into a battle of giant-sized, wooden robots! 20 Pages. Written by Eric Adams, art by Jeremy Treece. PREVIEW
STRETCH GOAL 1: $10,000 - UV Spot coating! -- We'll add a fancy Spot UV coating to the cover of the hardcover graphic novel. Yes, it's shiny and that may sound conflicting to the 'lackluster' concept, but it's not. You'll notice all the white paint on that cover -- that's what gets the UV spot coat. Think of it as Fahrenheit turning his lackluster world into a shinier one. See? Now it seems fitting! UNLOCKED!!!
(NEW LOWER GOAL!!!): STRETCH GOAL 1: $12,000 - Bookmark -- Every reward of $35 or more gets a fancy LACKLUSTER WORLD themed bookmark. It will be double-sided, and grayscale, of course.
STRETCH GOAL 2: $20,000 - Sticker Pack! -- Every reward of $35 or more, gets a sticker pack! You can start a vandalism revolution in your own town with a pack of high-quality grayscale stickers featuring LACKLUSTER WORLD characters and some of Fahrenheit's street art. I'll share the art as we approach this goal.
STRETCH GOAL 4: $25,000 - GET PINK EYE! -- This Fahrenheit guy is an albino, right? He’s noticeably colorless to his peers, yet to us readers, everyone in the book is physically colorless and, ironically, Fahrenheit is the most colorful character. It was always a small dream of mine to print his eyes pink through the pages to show off that metaphorical layer, but it was simply cost-prohibitive. HOWEVER, if we can reach this stretch goal, we gonna do it!
SOME PAGES FROM LACKLUSTER WORLD:
Risks and challenges
The risks are few as this is primarily a collection of already published work. As I launch this campaign, the new and adjusted work is about 80% complete and I expect the finished artwork will be in the hands of the printer in 30 to 45 days after this campaign ends. Possible delays would only be an accident or some other unusual emergency that draws my attention away from completing the book, but I've not had my drawing arm broken or my house struck by tornado yet, so it's unlikely that will happen.
Printing and shipping will then require another 8 weeks from start. It is possible there could be delays in shipping, but they would only be delays; not failure to deliver.
Despite any delays, I've been producing LACKLUSTER WORLD comics since 2004 and creating this hardcover graphic novel has always been my dream. Barring death, I would never leave this project unfinished.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
