"B-Squad is off to a strong start. The comedy is on point. The action is exciting. Death haunts in an awesomely upsetting way." 4.5 out of 5
-The Comic Book Herald
B-Squad needs approximately $10,000 to finalize the art production for our next 100 pages of comics, pay for the initial print run, and start our next summer comic book tour kicking off with Comic-Con International in San Diego!
Ridiculous. Dangerous. Expendable. That's B-Squad in a nutshell. Our first two Kickstarter successes allowed us to get started and make the first volume of wacky character killing adventures, and we've banked Volume One's success into launching Volume Two. I've teamed up with 9 artists to bring the next five adventures to you and they are all working on the book right now.
We want to make more hilarious adventures of B-Squad for YOU!
We Recommend this Pledge Level!
VOLUME TWO IS IN PRODUCTION NOW
Volume Two collects the next five missions for B-Squad which are just as ripe for dangerous action and ridiculous plots for our expendable band of misfits. We've recruited 5 new artists to take command of bringing Eben's misadventure missions to life! Let's see what they're whipping up!
MISSION 6: CAMBO - FIRST BLOOD
Set in Sacramento, B-Squad faces off against the 4 Mugwai of the Apocalypse as they journey through cultural landmarks of Sacramento and have a final showdown at the Tower Bridge against Cambo, the Cambodian Rambo.
MISSION SEVEN: LITTERBUG LOTTERY
B-Squad journeys to the center of the Pacific Ocean to recover potentially millions of dollars in unclaimed lottery tickets swirling in the Great Pacific Garbage Patch! Discarded trash heaped in the Pacific Ocean? What could go wrong?
MISSION EIGHT: CROWDFUNDED CALAMITY
Sweded-film fanatics abscond with a stolen copy of the next Star Wars script. They've fled into a crowdfundeded Death Star that's been launched into the upper atmosphere and now B-Squad's sent to shoot it out of the sky. Cardboard costumes, low-budget space ships, and gobs of referential humor... oh my!
MISSION NINE: MAN ON THE MANTLE
The zany Man on the Mantle Christmas craze is sweeping the nation. These tiny elven dolls are being set on mantles across the USA. After discovering surveillance equipment in the dolls, B-Squad traces their origins back to the North Pole and exposes their sinister roots.
MISSION TEN: SILLY SEASON
The emergence of strange and mystical beasts sighted in the Australian outback has reached the attention of the world. B-Squad is sent in to investigate and try to recover evidence these creatures exist!
Wait! What?! You haven't read B-Squad Volume One?
In Volume One, B-Squad screwed up the plans ofhipsters illegally poaching mogwai in Cambodia and tested their wits against a masking tape wizard responsible for kidnapping Bill Murray. B-Squad then saved an eccentric billionaire from his ant-like swarm of dachshunds on a Hawaiian island before putting the smack down on James Cameron cosplay fans raiding a derelict British submarine to get walk-on parts for Avatar 3.

"The easiest way to think of this story is if the A-Team sucked at what they do, but it was awesome to watch them fail in the process." -Comic Bastards
"Comics like this are much needed because we can get so caught up in our big events and melodramatic spandex wearing characters that we forget to just kick back and have a good time." -Comic Attack
The next 5 misfits will be revealed as we hit our goals for the project. At each $2,000 increment until we fully fund, we'll meet a new rookie. These squaddies will be introduced via exclusive dossier updates for our backers for an early preview into the pages of B-Squad.

B-Squad is all about impermanence and laughing in the face of death. Every issue, our beloved bespectacled and bearded creator sits down and spins a "teetotum" - which is just a high-falutin' word for a spinning dice or top. This six-sided top weaves the frequently untimely deaths of our squaddies into the book. Six characters. Six sides. One roll. One death. And Eben's gotta write it into the plot.
Why on Earth would you do that, Eben?
Killing my darling characters is all part of the greater writer's experiment and larger vision I have for B-Squad. I love to design and create characters, but I wanted a method to chew through them. A man only has so many kidneys! In stewing on B-Squad in it's infancy, I found a way to explore writing itself, as well as several paradoxes, the structure of narrative storytelling, meaning of existence, and well, yeah, making fun of stuff, and all that, too...
You'll just have to trust me on that one at this stage. If you absolutely want a little more insight, I invite you to read the introduction in Volume One or get serious and back at a level that includes our Art & Story book.
Each reward level builds upon all of the previous reward levels. If back at $100, you'll also receive the rewards from the $10, $25, $50, and $75 pledges. There are a few levels that do not link into this system, each of those is noted.
On the printed version of Volume Two
We want you to make our books and you want to read our books. So we've created this Kickstarter to focus the rewards on creating the new book and work with existing vendors we've used before to provide any of our other products.
Volume One of B-Squad turned out AHHHHHMAAAAZIING. We're once again going to partner again with PrintNinja to bring the same level of polish and create a covetous first edition for Volume Two.
The main goal of this Kickstarter is to get you this awesome new book.
The book itself will contain the five 21-page comic adventures outlined above collected in one 8x10" large-size comic book that will be over 120 pages. Just as before, it's our goal to enrobe the book in an elegant slipcase for display on your shelf, seal in a vault, or table on the back of your toilet.
Our first print run will be sequentially numbered to maximize any collectibility and we will do our best to ship lowest numbers first.
On the B-Squad Journal
One of the joys of making comics is running into the many people who also want to make comics and the first thing I typically say is, write it down.
So in supporting B-Squad at this level, I will be able to create a line of journals that I will use to inspire you - and new artists and writers, thinkers and doodlers, and just help ink or pencil flood empty pages with ideas.
On the B-Squad Socks
The biggest hit of our previous campaigns has always been our awesome B-Squad socks.
This year we'll be switching things up a bit. Same basic gloriously warm and long lasting sock, but we're going to tweak the design a bit enough that these socks will be new even to folks that already have a pair.
This is what the sock will look like. They are already in production.
On the B-Squad Art & Story Book
The process and work that goes into any comic book can be incredibly fascinating.
If you're a lover of production artwork books from films like Star Wars or enjoy BOOM! Studios' oversized Pen & Ink series of books, you'll get a huge kick out of this art book. In it, we'll explore the story process that went into B-Squad, break down sample scripts, and ultimately leave you with large line-art and activities to get a deeper understanding of where B-Squad came from, it's current incarnation, and where we hope to take it far down the road. We intend to sequentially number and autograph each of these must-have books.
On the Being Drawn in B-Squad
This is your chance to be in the pages of Volume Two. A cameo extra somewhere in the background creating a Where's Waldo experience as you read the book.
You'll send us a headshot, full front body and side-view picture and one of the artist's will stash you in the background in at least ONE of the issues. Who knows, maybe you'll even get to talk!
On the Challenge Coin
Our rare treat to a select few. There are not many Challenge Coins in the world from B-Squad. We made 100. There will only ever be 100. You'll be in rare company and have the glorious distinction of getting future first-run editions of B-Squad reserved and shipped directly to you at no extra cost. That's our pledge. If we ever hit the big time, flashing the challenge coin is the fastest way to show B-Squad creators and fans you were one of those earliest supporters.
On our website, www.bsquadcomic.com, we've got some amazing ready-to-ship now items that you can snag exclusively during the kickstarter. Original line art, hand-stitched patches via Nerd Scouts, and even original drawings and sketches from artists involved in Volume One and Two! We've even put Volume One on mega-sale for new readers!
And then there is Relicblade!
B-Squad's lead artist somehow was able to design a complete tabletop miniatures game with rules and everything in between working B-Squad! It's freaking amazing and fun! Hordes of boar-faced pigment doing battle with heroic knights and druids.
If you back both B-Squad and Relicblade, you'll also be receive an exclusive Relicblade card modeled after the very dice that slays all the B-Squad characters, The Pequod!
What Are You Going to Do With All This Money??
Over 50% of the $10,000 will go to the creative team to finish off their final payment. Each artist that works on B-Squad is contracted and paid a page rate. They've currently received a solid chunk from Eben, and the final portion is conditional on the success of the Kickstarter. In many cases, this is their first work in comics. B-Squad is a team effort, and we also want it to be a proving ground for talented artist looking to break into the industry and push them to be independent artists.
B-Squad is more than just a comic book. By backing B-Squad:
- You're paying artists. Eben is committed to pay each artist a competitive page rate for their hard work on his silly stories. This is, sadly, a desperately rare thing in the comics industry and Eben has already staked a significant amount of money to get these artists working on B-Squad, now. You're interest in Volume Two is just securing their future.
- You're empowering new and emerging artists. Money is great, but B-Squad truly gives a new crop of artists confidence to move forward in their careers. Major comic studios don't want to see pinups and fan art. They want to judge an acumen for visual story-telling. Volume One artists continuing into the comics industry, working for animation studios, or developing their own tabletop miniatures game.
- You're helping to create a new species of comic book. B-Squad has one writer - collaborating with 5+ artists concurrently - to create a humorous story that's about no singular character. Theoretically, if money was less of an issue for us, we could put out multiple volumes of B-Squad every year and we're well on our way!
We have stretch goals in mind, but most of them are about additional production value to our rewards. For instance,
- At $14,000, it would ensure that we can slip-case Volume Two.
- At $16,000, we can go super-custom with the journal and art books.
- At $25,000, we could pay all the artists a bonus, and give stable green light production on Volume Three for a possible WINTER 2016 release.
These are just examples. Not promises. We don't want to promise the moon and not send you there. We want to keep the promise we know we can keep: When you open a package from B-Squad, it's going to impress you.
Like all our previous Kickstarters, any overage will simply go to improving Volume Two. Beyond that we'll push onward toward Volume Three production and adding more destinations our summer, fall and winter book tour(s) so we can meet face to face and high-five about all things wonderful.
It's our philosophy with B-Squad to be flexible and embrace impermanence.
We'll have a different art team for each adventure. Eben Burgoon has penned the next five scripts, rolled the dice to see who died, and each artist is working on illustrating the book RIGHT NOW!
Picking up right where Volume One left B-Squad is Michael Calero. A seasoned comic book illustrator that's travels to many comic book conventions across the country. Sean Sutter is the series lead artist and did much of the character design for the new rookies in Volume Two. Sean illustrates at least one adventure of each volume. He returns to B-Squad having completed issue four and five of Volume One. Volume Two's issue ten will be illustrated in full by Sean Sutter. He lives in Davis with his wife and daughter and frequently destroys Eben at Star Wars: X-Wing miniatures and Relicblade (a game that's on Kickstarter right now!)

Michael Finn is returning to letter the entire volume again. His lettering earned a lot of acclaim in volume one. After a shopping spree on Richard Starkings' Comiccraft (www.comicbookfonts.com), he's ready to add a whole lot more pizazz to Volume Two. He lives in Sacramento with his fiancé and single-&-ready-2-mingle kitty-cat. Follow him on Instagram and give him your hearts.
The great big bearded buffoon/mastermind behind B-Squad is Eben Burgoon. He serves as the series writer and oversees the production of all the artwork and designs all the finished books and products. You can read more about him at www.ebenburgoon.com or give him a follow on Instagram or Twitter.
Our main objective is to have this book ready for Comic Con International in San Diego. We submitted our work on Volume One and we're selected by a jury to participate in the Small Press Pavilion of the whole show!
The mission is to get the first batch of books to our Kickstarter backers and use any remaining to sell at San Diego and kickoff our summer and winter convention schedule that will take us to many destinations in California and possible other west coast cities.
We're also participating in Kicking It Forward and will use a portion of our funds raised to help the dreams of others come true.
Risks and challenges
It ain't our first rodeo, but we do know there are a lot of hiccups that can happen when you suck down heaps of sarsaparilla.
With B-Squad returning to Kickstarter for a new full-length book - it feels like familiar territory. We have a firm grasp on the technical challenges that lay ahead, we've already worked with many of the vendors previously, and feel we've provided a realistic estimate of the time it takes to produce a 5 issue comic book collection where in all the artists are appropriately paid for their work.
Hiccups happen - but we've got the fire and determination to overcome whatever comes our way. Just as we have every time before.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
