About this project
What Is Being Funding?
Illustrated by 5 different art teams; different artists each storyline.
Our goal is to print and ship the book in time for the holidays.
What is B-Squad?
B-Squad is one of Mental Floss magazine's Most Interesting Comics of the Week
- “It’s like watching South Park, but everybody is Kenny!”
-Geek Life Podcast
- "It looks like a blast!"
-Christopher Hastings, The Adventures of Dr. McNinja
- "(Burgoon) brings considerable comedic energy to the story"
-Robot 6/Comic Book Resources
- “The easiest way to think of this story is if the A-Team sucked at what they do, but it was awesome to watch them fail in the process.”
- "Comics like this are much needed because we can get so caught up in our big events and melodramatic spandex wearing characters that we forget to just kick back and have a good time."
The Kickstarter Goal
With this Kickstarter, the true goal is to fund 4 remaining 21-page full-color issues of B-Squad and collect all 6 of them into one big Volume One! Thanks to last year's kickstarter, our first issue was a big hit and the success helped privately funding the second issue which is now complete! However, the comic book market right now has an emphasis on collections and, so, that's our new goal for B-Squad.
The more support we get for B-Squad, the more book everybody gets!
By employing several artists at the same time they can create a unique reading experience and we can create issues 3-6 all at the same time, and collect that work into one BIG book that ships on time for the holiday gift season.
We've Got Issues...
Here is what the book will likely look like:
In Issue One, B-Squad is sent to Cambodia to stop hipsters from the poaching of free-range Mogwui from a Cancer Research Facility.
This book is complete and you can download a free PDF copy of Issue #1 at www.bsquadcomic.com/shop
Issue 2 and Issue 3: Tapigami Terror
Story by Eben Burgoon - Lines by Jon Williams - Colors by Claudia Palescandolo - Letters by Michael Finn
Check out the production art On Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.10151949774986540&type=1&l=fff423ac66
Issues 2 and 3 take place in the strange and foreign land of Tapigami - the masking tape artwork of Danny Scheible. Danny has kidnapped Bill Murray and absconded with him to the tape city. B-Squad must raid the tiny city and get him back. Issue 2 is complete, and the first 10 pages are viewable to backers at this link.
Issue 3 is currently under production by Jon Williams and will conclude the journey into the Tapopolis with feral Bill Murray joining B-Squad against the Tapigami forces.
Issue 4 - Dachshund Debacle
Story by Eben Burgoon - Art by Sean Sutter - Letters by Michael Finn
Artist Sean Sutter takes the reigns for B-Squad's trip to a privately owned Hawaiian Island now swarming with collectively minded dachshunds. B-Squad must recover the eccentric billionaire who created the wee bitey beasts before they become pup-chow.
Issue 5 - Submarine Subterfuge
Story by Eben Burgoon - Art by Junior Bruce
Every British submarine contains Letters of Last Resort - the standing orders for the nuclear attack sub should Britain fall in the even of nuclear annihilation. When the new British Successor-class submarine goes missing off the coast of Belize. B-Squad is sent to the briny depths to recover the letters before a crazed pack of James Cameron fan-boys get there first!
The Characters of B-Squad
B-Squad needs lots of characters, as one misfit dies, they are replaced by a new one at the start of the next issue. B-Squad's journey is about the squad more than any one individual. Leaders will rise and fall. Romances will flame and fizzle. There will be traitors, heroes, but most of all ridiculous adventures - easily single serve with an overarching thread tied by the surviving members.
I've got a pool of many archetypes, outright parodies, and misfit characters to plug into the story and add new direction to the squad's dynamic. Romances? Traitors? Heroes? Cowards? Yeah, they are all in there until their number comes up.
This whole project is all about funding the collection. We have only a few goodies for this project and here are the details.
No matter how many issues we fund, the book will always be a rad full magazine-size-8.5"x11"-glossy-paper-inside-and-out-fun-to-the-touch-cover-perfect-bound-trade-paperback-style book. If we get super-funded, that book could grow from 84 pages to over 160 and we could make it a fancy and gorgeous hardcover book. This is definitely what we really want to make for you guys, but obviously, we've got to find those fans of these adventures to make it happen.
Each art team will be given the green light to begin production as soon as their issue is funded. Jon and Claudia are waiting at the $5000 to start issue 3, Sean is eager to start Issue 4 at $8000 and so on and so forth.
B-Squad the T-Shirt!
The B-Squad t-shirt will be printed on a lightweight black t-shirt and will feature the characters of all funded issues. We'll be having these shirts made locally in Sacramento by a local screen printer.
MAKE A CAMEO IN AN ISSUE OF B-SQUAD!
There are two ways to get your mug in B-Squad! For $100, you can appear in an issue of B-Squad in one of our many crowd scenes. For $250, you can be a familiar face and appear in multiple issues. Most of these will be start with in issue #3. We have plans for other cameos and fun $100 backer prizes for the subsequent issues.
Challenge coins are traditionally used to prove membership to a group when challenged by other members. This B-Squad challenge coin allows the same effect. To those few who will likely back at the $75 level, OR CURRENTLY OWN A CHALLENGE COIN, are entitled to a floppy single-issue of each book. We will only ever print 100 copies of the newly funded issues, and only 500 of #1.
You'll be in a very select group of 100 awesome people that are committed to collecting B-Squad, receive single issues, and we view the keepers of these coins as ambassadors and torch-bearing champions of B-Squad.
From last year's kickstarter, we did socks, and they look pretty dope. We've got an awesome vendor in LA that's been really good to us, and we're looking to bump up a reorder of our socks.
About Eben E.B. Burgoon

Just as we did last year, Eben's participating in Kicking It Forward.
Risks and challenges
Since funding last year, I have been paying artists to work on B-Squad. Lauren finished up issue one on time and we got it out to all our backers.
We delivered issue #1 on time as per our projections, and overcame a major hiccup with our sock supplier and stayed true to our promise of delivering socks.
Learning from past mistakes, and having managed a successful Kickstarter, fulfilling the promises (albeit slow on those damn socks), this is all something I know I can do.
This time around we've got confirmed quotes from our vendors and print shops for shirts and socks and our printer is all jazzed up and has given us a great quote for the print run we hope to fund.
We are ready to make this first B-Squad collection happen - we hope you're ready for it, too!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
Basically, I'm throwing in the towel on trying to produce single issues. Not enough people are consuming comics that way today. Almost every colleague creator I talk with says success & stability comes with that first trade. I can't afford to produce floppies frequently enough to stay relevant in the HIGHLY competitive monthly/bimonthly marketplace.
Instead, this time, what I'm asking our fan base to do is fund another 21-90 more pages of B-Squad -- enough content to create a sizable trade paperback. This would give us a more stable future for the series & one where I ideally don't have to come ask the fans for money annually.
However, I have to ask - is it awful to ask our fans to preorder a series they are interested in once a year for $25 or $5 for the PDF? I think that's pretty reasonable, especially considering a lot of the contributed funds go straight into our artists' pockets to keep this series alive and kicking so I can write about how misfit mercs kick the bucket.
I'm super thankful for the success of last year's Kickstarter and every dollar and then some went to making comics and fulfilling the rewards. The money made at conventions, shows, at the shops locally, even nice chunks of that sweet day job money were used to pay for issue #2. That successful kickstarter last year thankfully allowed me to finance both issues and pay the art teams involved. I am proud that the fans I have are down to help me do that.
If you possess a challenge coin currently or through this Kickstarter, you will still receive single issues as per our arrangement. We will only be making single issues for our Challenge Coin holders in the future.
If you want the collected book, you would need to back at the appropriate level to get that. We have created some options so you can support, but don't want to double down.
We will write on a case by case basis - if you prefer to get the collected book, we can send that instead of the individual issues.
