NOW RAISING FUNDING FOR:
Issue #2: The Tapigami Terror
After B-Squad buries their recently fallen comrade, they embark on a mission to recover actor Bill Murray from an artist collective in Sacramento. Murray was abducted while taking a leak during a celebrity golf tournament as the capstone to a string of kidnappings of other artists and cultural icons. B-Squad is shrunk down to invade a tiny sized city made out of strips of masking tape in an artform called “Tapigami”. B-Squad is immediately greeted by the Tapigami Jungles. This lush green area is home to culture creatures which quickly ambush B-squad. They attempt to escape, but one of B-Squad is eaten up, imparting the personality of the character to the creature. Shortly after the attack, they are saved by a feral Bill Murray. He convinces B-Squad to stop Tapigami’s plans to transform the world into a place of inspirational viral collaboration, and to recover the rest of the kidnapped artists.

B-Squad: Soldiers of Misfortune Premise
B-Squad : Soldiers of Misfortune is an action-adventure humor comic book series about a 6-person mercenary group made up of expendable misfits as they work together to complete dangerous & ridiculous missions.
In addition to the off-the-wall adventure and zany characters, in each issue of B-Squad, one of the 6 characters in each issue will be killed off. This will be determined by the spin of a gambling totem. One spin, one marked for death character.
Check out the press reaction via BLEEDING COOL! & GEEKS OF DOOM!
Each issue begins with the funeral for the last fallen member, and an introduction of a new character along with a briefing of the next mission from Darkwater Security Services. During the issue, the characters will have to deal with the task at hand, cope with the fall of one of their companions, as decided by the fateful roll of the totem, and still attempt to complete the mission.
Eben E.B. Burgoon is the series creator and writer for B-Squad. His main work in comic books has been the ongoing series "Eben07: Covert Custodian," an espionage-humor webcomic about the janitors that clean the mess left behind by super-spies. Burgoon has been writing short fiction, sketch comedy, and spec scripts for several years. While studying international relations at Chico State, he minored in creative writing - founding a campus improv troupe, and then studied sketch comedy writing with Chicago's Second City. He is based in Sacramento, CA.
Lauren Monardo is a professional illustrator and storyboard artist with over 10 years of experience. She graduated from NYC's School of Visual Arts with a BFA in Traditional Animation. Since then, Lauren has worked on a number of animation projects such as Venture Bros., animated versions of works by Lane Smith and Mo Willems, MC Frontalot's "I'll Form The Head" music video, and commercial storyboards for Lucky Charms, Trix Yogurt, Gogurt, and Honey Nut Cheerios. She has worked on various comic projects including her own series “The Slightly Askew Adventures of Inspector Ham & Eggs” and “Buddy Cops”. Lauren is completing each page of B-Squad in a mostly traditional manner. The pencils and inking process is done traditionally with ink and paper, while colors are done using Adobe Photoshop.
Issue One of B-Squad sends the grieving group to Cambodia with their new partner Hadley Hamlin, a color-blind ex-Navy Seal.
The B-Squad is sent to a strange cancer research facility which is attempting to use a limited supply of endangered and highly inbred "mogwui" creatures to cure cancer in children. B-Squad is sent in to attempt to protect the population of free-range mogwui from a mysterious group of poachers known as "The 66% Percent."
B-Squad is soon ambushed by the 66% Percents and they reveal that the facilities purpose is far less than noble and B-Squad is left to decide if completing the mission is the right thing to do.
Issue One is currently illustrated to 10 pages by Lauren Monardo. Once you back the project, you'll be able to access the 10 page preview of the book.
B-Squad #1 is set to be a 24 page comic book. The money raised will be used to pay Lauren Monardo to finish the remaining 14 pages, to afford an initial print run of substantial volume and to cover promotional costs associated to make and grow B-Squad into a hit series.
Life and Death in B-Squad
With one character dying every issue, I have 36 other characters set to replace recently deceased characters - but I wanted the random fate element of B-Squad to be something special for the characters who are going to bite the dust. It needed to be something more than me shorting a die out of a Yahtzee set.
The Pequod, is named after the ill-fated ship in Moby Dick, which itself is named after an ill-fated tribe of Native Americans known as the Pequot. They were all but wiped out during The Pequot War in a terrible massacre known as The Mystic Massacre.
The Pequod is kept safely in a hollowed out copy of "All Arrows Point to Murder" (see below) and every time I make a roll for B-Squad, I'll be filming the roll and documenting my feelings about the result. The first death has already been recorded, and I rolled it in front of paper doll versions of each character. I rolled, got the result, and then promptly dropped the paper doll into a cup of coffee and drank up the deceased...
Every resulting roll will feature a simulated terrible death of the character that's taken out.
The greater wish of this Kickstarter is to not only fund Issue #1, but hopefully the series itself. Every $6000, we can greenlight the production of the next book. Here is a quick look at the next few books:
Issue #3: Tapigami Turmoil
After B-Squad buries their recently fallen comrade, they allow Bill Murray (yes, that does mean I may be "killing" Bill Murray - I'm scared, too, but Zombieland did it.) into their ranks. Shortly after, a rumbling in the jungle yields the Tapigami Leader, Danny. He emerges from the jungle astride a large creature made of masking tape. Greeting B-squad, Danny peacefully returns them to his Tapopolis and gives them a tour of his wondrous city. B-squad is skeptical of Danny’s vision at first, but eventually are each tempted to stay in the city forever as the various kidnapped artists seem happy and content. However, a final twist in the story leaves Danny revealing his true intentions and motivations - which have an other-worldy influence! Before long it becomes clear he intends to assimilate the squaddies, but a kink in his plan for global collaboration ends with a death on his hands. Frustrated and furious, Tapigami master Danny uses his powers to join the city and artists into a giant rocketship, and they fly into space until they can successfully bring their plan to fruition. Unfortuately, this leaves behind a wandering tapigami monk, who requests to fill the recently vacated position in B-Squad.
Issue #4 : The Letter of Last Resort
Every British submarine contains a safe with a top secret “letter of last resort” - a letter from the Prime Minister ordering the nuclear armed submarine to either fire or stand down in the event of nuclear war. Enthralled with the idea, James Cameron seeks out the safe after a british sub sinks deep in international waters. Denizens of deep and murderous documentarians are out to stop B-Squad from the ultimate spoiler alert!
Issue #5 : The Dachshund Debacle!
An eccentric billionaire buys a small hawaiian island and begins breeding better, smarter, faster dachshunds. After a major storm surge hits the island and nobody is heard from for weeks, B-Squad is sent in to investigate the island. However something goes horribly wrong and they will be lucky to escape with their lives.
Issue #6 : Cambo! The Cambodian Rambo
A callback to the incidents in the first issue, a lone cambodian refugee has been stalking B-squad, waiting for the right moment to serve up his revenge at a mild mannered log cabin in the Pacific Northwest. Cornered by Cambo, B-Squad must escape a myriad of terrible and deadly rustic themed rube goldberg machines and traps! Deadly games!
Each reward level over $10 will get you a print copy of Issue #1, and every reward level over $50, if we hit the stretch goals, could potentially give you Issues 1 thru 6.
The first issue will be a 24+ page standard sized comic book. Every tier that gets a physical copy will be signed by series creator, Eben Burgoon.
There are currently 5 poster options with the possibility of more through stretch goals. The posters are currently teasers of the future issues! Additionally, you can add extra posters for $5 each. We'll also have other artists rendering B-Squad characters soon. More detailed looks at the selection of posters can be found on bsquadcomic.com
I have a giant collection of socks and I feel like everybody is always offering t-shirts to go with their Kickstarters. These socks will rock. They will feature the B-Squad arrowhead logo, the comic logo, and the tagline. They will be black base with red trim. The B-Squad socks will be extra comfy and coveted by your close comrades.
The Challenge Coin
Challenge coins are traditionally used to prove membership to a group when challenged by other members. This B-Squad challenge coin allows the same effect. We are in debted to the backers of this project, and to those few who will likely back at the $50 and up level, we incorporated the challenge coin as a way to tell us, "Hey! We've been with you from day one!" and get Lauren or myself to give high fives, maybe a sketch, maybe we buy you lunch. You'll be in a very select group of awesome people.
The challenge coins will be a 2.5 inch, double sided coin, with color and raised edging. They will be one of the sweetest things you own. Real life treasure.
Adopt a Mogwui -SOLD OUT
This early-bird backer special gives you the chance to adopt your very own mogwui! This includes everything in the Loyalty Oath Reward level plus the opportunity to save a mogwui from itself by giving it a sporty bicycle safety helmet with your name on it! That way everyone will know to not mess with your mogwui! You'll even get to choose the helmet color! There is only one litter up for adoption, and as everyone knows, a litter of mogwui is 12. Once the adoption papers go through you will receive a personal photo and a short biography of your inbred fluffy Chinese demon. Act soon! If they could count, they'd count on you.
INSTA-HIPSTA-GRAMA-MATIC ME!!-SOLD OUT
Now is your chance to be a member of the 66% Percent! You will be illustrated into the story of B-Squad #1 as one of the Hipsters who will be fighting and possibly dying alongside B-Squad. There are only 3 slots for this reward level. You'll be able to work with Eben Burgoon about the details of your character once we hit the $3000 mark. Unless you're too cool to admit it, this is an awesome opportunity to be an early & forever part of B-Squad!
The ISSUE #1 Lineart
Lauren and I have selected 10 pieces of lineart that we will be make available for purchase out of the 24 pages of B-Squad #1. These are collectors items for sure and we will send the selected page along with a printed version of the final page. Since this is an obvious amount of love and support for B-Squad, you'll also get the book and challenge coin.
These are not all the rewards we'll offer in the month long B-Squad kickstarter. New rewards will arise. Particularly if you backers unlock a significant number of the stretch goals. Getting illustrated into the comic or becoming an influential character would be awesome. There will be options for cameos if we unlock certain stretch goals.
We're also considering offering up the back page to sponsors or advertisers. If you're interested in that, please contact me directly so that we can discuss it further.
So I can I become a B-Squad member?
Theoretically. I want to make sure the production of future issues is secured before I offer up roles in the comic to people. Issue one is written and moving along, and I'm getting started on issue three soon. At this point, the first chance for a B-Squad member to be based on a fan isn't until Issue 4. Should we get near that with the stretch goals, I will make it a reward.
Confident that this project will hit $3000 I need to produce and print issue #1, it would still leave the future of the series in question. My hope is that the strength of this project will let us go above and beyond. B-Squad is currently budgeted at $6000. Every $6000 backed means I can give a greenlight to the production of another issue, and every time that happens, everybody that backed at $25+ will at least get a PDF copy of the additional book. Backers at $50 will get a print copy of each book produced.
I will also be participating in Brian Fargo's Kicking it Forward campaign to support new and exciting projects, particiularly comics, on Kickstarter. learn more here: http://kickingitforward.org
Risks and challenges
Lauren Monardo and I are both really excited to finish up the first issue, which we are both confident will happen before the end of August, and hopefully putting all the backer shipments out in the second week of September.
Both of Lauren & I have been through the experience of self-publishing books and creating merchandise and the process and hangups that can be associated with the fulfillment of backer rewards. We have good support networks and are working with reputable companies to help us fulfill the rewards.
There isn't a lot of risk. Should B-Squad get fully funded - we are ready to go. Production of the artwork is our job #1. We intend to have the book done in September. I have spent a great deal of time researching and sourcing the items we intend to produce. I have always and will be an open and honest communicator should we hit any delays.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
