About

We at BodyStories could not be more excited to announce our upcoming project Inwood Erases Hate with Lovean arts-based, outdoor celebration centering around social justice for immigrant communities. The event will include music, dance performance, audience participation, and the creation and unveiling of the community-created banner, while actively incorporating stories of immigration, shared by artistic collaborators and audience members.

Inwood Erases Hate with Love aims to peacefully mobilize the Inwood community, and ultimately renew participants’ sense of acceptance, understanding, and connection to each other. This free event will take place on October 4, 2019 in Fort Tryon Park, and in preparation, the BodyStories company, in collaboration with YWHA, Bread & Yoga, Uptown Ballet Academy, Annette Aguilar, and Monica Robles, will hold free workshops culminating in the community-wide performance.

We have secured the support of the Lower Manhattan Cultural Council for this event, but we need your help to make the performance as impactful as possible while supporting our contributing artists!

More about Inwood Erases Hate with Lovewhat makes it special?

Conceived by BodyStories Artistic Director Teresa Fellion, Inwood Erases Hate with Love will use dance and communal celebration to counteract a specific instance of hate and violence that shook the Inwood community last year: Identity Evropa, a white supremacist group, marched through Fort Tryon Park, targeting immigrant communities with racist and xenophobic messages. The hateful impact of this rally was felt by many within the diverse upper-Manhattan community of immigrants, citizens, people of color, and their allies, including BodyStories’ Teresa Fellion, a 20-year resident of Inwood.

Inwood Erases Hate with Love is not only a response to Identity Evropa’s presence, but it’s about leaving the echo chamber of the Internet behind and meeting each other face to face. This is how we spread love and community—through tangible, meaningful engagement. The goal of this event is to permeate the surrounding community with messages of inclusion and resilience in order to sow seeds of togetherness and empowerment that can be carried forward in our hearts and minds.

BodyStories is a contemporary dance company of women from NYC, Nicaragua, Puerto Rico, Greece, Germany—many of whom are themselves immigrants. We are dedicated to making work that captures and communicates universal human encounters through dynamic, purposeful movement. We bring a wealth of cultural arts activism experience into each work that we create with community partners. In the past we have focused on family heritage, personal obstacles, human migration and displacement, identity and community, and issues of addiction.

“I’m passionate about making dance accessible to low-income communities,” says Teresa Fellion. “I believe that dance is a universal language that connects people, and I am interested in how contemporary dance inspires audiences to physically sense emotional and psychological aspects of the human condition.” Many of the company’s works have been site-specific and involved innovative methods of audience interaction, including guiding audience members to different locations in a space and encouraging them to make their own distinctive shapes in relation to company dancers. “We are a multifaceted, highly physical company laced with provocative, emotional, political, and humorous edges. Valuing international exchange, we collectively speak nine languages and research, perform, and collaborate with artists from five continents.”

Who we are

We are working with an incredibly talented group of artists to put Inwood Erases Hate with Love together. This work would not be the same without the invaluable contributions from the following people:

Artistic Director and Choreographer: Teresa Fellion

Teresa Fellion has practiced social justice and activism since the 1990s, and has been involved with community groups, homeless shelters, soup kitchens, and protests. Since 2005, Fellion has employed dance, live music, and theater with social justice at scores of NYC schools, organizations, and professional performances as Director of InterCATaction/Children’s Adaptive Theater and BodyStories: TFD, and as Teaching Artist for DreamYard, Marquis, Women’s Project, and CWP. The company has produced many free and ticketed public concerts and held several workshops with integrated participant performances, including a project with the Patrick Dempsey Cancer Center, where participants contributed text/movement created in collaboration with BodyStories. Fellion’s work navigates audiences through public spaces, and in doing so, shifts the audience’s perspective of the work and the messages involved. in interactive performances to open different perspectives. This was successfully done at Commissions from Department of Transportation 26 Federal Plaza, Chashama, and two productions at Danspace Project at St. Mark’s Church.

Social Justice Coordinator: Mónica Robles

Original Music: Kevin Keller, Muriel Louveau, John Yannelli, and Annette Aguilar is playing live.

Collaborative Visual Art Coordinator: Jaffia Royes

Dancers: Kate Bishop, Serena Chang, Erin Landers, and Xenia Mansour

Costume Designer: Nina Katan

Rehearsal Director: Charly Wenzel

We are also involving other groups as guest artists and workshop participants for this community wide celebration, including…

  • Bread & Yoga
  • YWHA Washington Heights & Inwood
  • Uptown Ballet Academy
  • Dance Bridge Workshop

...and more!

Why donate?

BodyStories is a small non-profit dance company, and we rely on earned income through performance and educational programming, grants, and individual donors like you for subsistence. BodyStories is always tremendously grateful for the support of our individual donors! We love to create and share meaningful artistic experiences, but there are financial hurdles along the way.

We at BodyStories are passionate about using our art as a means to facilitate social justice. Inwood Erases Hate with Love is a performative event based around dignity, honoring our humanity, and a shared interest in the well-being of Inwood and the surrounding community. By supporting this campaign, you will be supporting an arts-based project that aims to combat white supremacy by supplying an inclusive, positive activism experience to a targeted community. If you support this campaign, you will be having so much more impact than partaking in “clicktivism” or “slacktivism.” With this project BodyStories is taking our activism back to the grassroots community and creating art to empower the marginalized and help people relate to each other in a productive, peaceful way. This is not about us as a brand, or our personality; this is about creating an event that lets people dream and hope in an uplifting environment.

Your support of this project will go directly to

Risks and challenges

Through touring extensively and producing work annually in New York, we have faced unforeseen obstacles with every production. There is always something: a last minute costume adjustment, an electrical malfunction, weather extremes, tending to a health concern so the BodyStories family can stay safe onstage... With each unexpected turn, we trust our instincts, problem solve, and grow wiser, knowing that the show must go on. And with the strength of our talented administrative staff, our dedicated Board, and relationships in the Inwood community, the show definitely WILL go on!
