Epic Arts is looking to set-up an office in Shanghai, China so that we can put on workshops and performances on a more regular basis.
NEW GOAL ALERT! Generous friends have offered to match all gifts pledged as of 16 April, until the campaign ends on 21 April, at 2:27pm CDT. As a result, our NEW GOAL IS $26,906!
The Project. Over the past decade, Epic has established offices in both London and Kampot, while continuing to run short-term projects throughout various provinces in China.
We are now ready to set-up an office in China so that we can run projects and create performances on a more regular basis. In a society where disabilities are often shameful or hidden, Epic's projects in China have a profound impact on those with whom we work. Having a more lasting presence will enable us to deepen the relevance and widen the impact of the art that we help to create.
I am moving to Shanghai at the end of March 2012 to begin running these workshops.
Our long-term vision is to one day open a gallery featuring artists with disabilities, along with opening a café run by people with disabilities.
How the Money Will be Used. In the short-term, I need to raise $35,000 to run seven workshop series this first year, which will definitively establish the Epic Arts office in China. All funds will go towards making these seven workshop series possible: hiring freelance artists to help co-lead workshops, art supplies, travel costs, training of Chinese artists interested in working with Epic, etc.
Epic and Community. The reason why I am hoping to raise this money through Kickstarter is because I am just as in need of building a community around this project, as I am in finding the funds to make it happen. The mission of Epic has always been most successful when pursued in the context of a community.
Sponsor. Epic in China has fiscally partnered with VSA Texas, which allows Epic to raise tax-deductible funds within the U.S. While Epic is a UK charity, the China Director of Epic is a native Texan; therefore Epic in China and VSA Texas' kindred visions and missions have created a natural partnership between the two organizations.
VSA Texas (www.vsatx.org), the state organization on arts and disability, is a 501(c)(3) not for profit organization that works to create a society where people with disabilities learn through, participate in, and enjoy the arts.Their mission is to promote the creative power in people with disabilities by working with all community members to facilitate full access to the cultural and educational arts. VSA Texas is a member of the international network of VSA, an affiliate of The John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts.
Tax-deductible. Because of Epic's sponsorship with U.S. based 501(c)(3), VSA Texas, your donations are tax-deductible!
Employee Matching Benefits. Most private companies offer employee matching benefits. Please do tell your company about your giving to Epic Arts in China, and matching can happen through VSA TX. Feel free to contact me for more details.
