Yeah, it’s me again. I'm here to publish an 88-page graphic novel with artist collaborator Anna Wieszczyk called RED ANGEL DRAGNET.
Last year, I ran a successful Kickstarter campaign to fund the publication of RED ANGEL DRAGNET #1, a 22-page action-horror comic illustrated from my script by artist Anna Wieszczyk (Lucid, Godkiller). Last year's project only funded the first chapter (of four). In the time since then, I’ve finished writing the book, and Anna has nearly completed the artwork (she also illustrated the excellent Interesting Drug from Archaia, which you should all read).
My original intention was to serialize the story in four 22-page installments, but since the entire book is nearly finished, we’ve decided to publish it all at once in a handsome collected edition. Anna’s already been paid a page rate for her work, but I’m turning to Kickstarter to cover the cost of printing RED ANGEL DRAGNET VOLUME ONE: Lose This Skin. (This collection includes the first chapter of R.A.D., previously published in serial form.)
Okay, but what is RED ANGEL DRAGNET about?
R.A.D. (convenient damn acronym, isn’t it?) tells the story of Nate Reed, a Chicago bookseller who discovers that demons really do exist. Inspired by sigils and symbols found in his own rare books, Nate covers himself in protective tattoos and endeavors to fight the supernatural forces that haunt his city.
As Nate’s collection of tattoos has grown, so has his confidence, and he’s realized that the same tattoos that protect him from dangers without can also protect him from dangers within. Nate Reed has summoned a demon into his own body, caging it there, where he can draw on its power.
However, Nate Reed has inadvertently turned his own skin into the world’s most comprehensive magical text. RED ANGEL DRAGNET, then, is the story of one bad night, during which an unseen puppet master will attempt to destroy Nate Reed and claim that skin for himself. Thanks to his tattoos, Nate Reed has grown from terrified to confident and from confident to arrogant, and Nate’s invisible adversary will use that arrogance against him.
Before the night is over, Nate Reed will discover that there’s nothing wrong with a little bit of fear.
Sounds pretty great! It looks like you’re sneaking a little something extra into the rewards.
About eight years ago, back when I believed that Warren Ellis’s ‘slimline’ format (like Fell or Casanova) was going to be the way of the future, I wrote a 16-page story called CORDUROY ROAD, which was illustrated by Dion Hamill. By the time I started working on R.A.D., I assumed that, like the slimline format, CORDUROY ROAD’s time had passed, so I started scavenging the wreckage for useful parts out of which to build this new thing. In a way, CORDUROY ROAD is the prototype for RED ANGEL DRAGNET.
16-page comics?! Did you really think that would work?
Yes. Warren Ellis is one of my major influences as a comics writer. When he talks, I tend to listen.
And to be clear, RED ANGEL DRAGNET is NOT a slimline format book.
Anyway, I revisited CORDUROY ROAD recently, and I found that it has aged well. It remains one of my favorite projects. I thought I’d take this opportunity to resurrect it, bundling it as a companion piece with the R.A.D. collected edition.
Eight years, eh? So this isn’t your first rodeo.
Nope. I’ve been making comics for over a decade. My greatest success has been the Kickstarter-funded graphic novel ORPHANS, which I published independently and which has found success on comiXology through their SUBMIT portal. In addition to Anna, I’ve previously worked with Gabriel (Ferals) Andrade, Anthony (Displaced Persons) Peruzzo, and Wendell (BlackAcre) Cavalcanti. They've all gone on to find awesome success in the medium. I’m basically the Good Luck Chuck of the comics world.
(And now I hate myself a little for making a Dane Cook reference.)
Here are some nice things people have said about me and my work.
Writer MATT MINER (Liberator, Toe Tag Riot) says, "Eric Palicki is a strong new voice in comics who deserves a huge audience. His work is sharp, smartly written, and always a ton of fun."
Writer ERICA SCHULTZ (M3, Revenge: The Secret Origin of Emily Thorne) says "Palicki brings a great sense of action to comics, and Wieszczyk translates that into beautiful motion on the page."
Writer/Artist ANTHONY PERUZZO (Displaced Persons, Nightmare World) says "Eric Palicki and Anna Wieszczyk have made a compelling crime and supernatural mystery that blends the likes of Hellblazer with CSI. If you like supernatural horror and a gritty crime drama, you'll love RED ANGEL DRAGNET."
Writer DIRK MANNING (Tales of Mr. Rhee, Write or Wrong, Nightmare World) says "There are few writers whose upcoming works I await as anxiously as those of writer Eric Palicki. Period."
Mike Marlow (@MikeyGeek on Twitter), writing for The Fellowship of the Geeks, said about ORPHANS #1: “The ‘weird’ stuff doesn’t look all that weird, and that helps to take the edge off. It lets us see the good story underneath. Check this one out.”
IGN's review of ORPHANS #1 called the issue "excellently done. The writing conveyed the characters, story, and pacing very well while the plot was engaging enough to give you that 'I don’t want it to end feeling' while still leaving quite a lot of mystery for the series moving forward. A."
Geek Speak Magazine called ORPHANS #3 one of the best of the week, on release, saying that the "pacing of this issue is executed perfectly, and the dialogue is also perfect, but Orphans really shines because of the massive talent of artist [Branko] Jovanovic, who makes this grim world all too real."
Yes! We have those! Take a look at the column to your right.
First and foremost: I am offering a preview chapter of RED ANGEL DRAGNET to everyone who pledges to this campaign. I'm confident that you'll like the complete collected edition, but I'm willing to prove it to you: pledge a dollar or more to the campaign, and within 24 hours, you'll receive a link to the digital edition or RED ANGEL DRAGNET #1 (22 story pages). If you like what you see, you'll have the chance to increase your pledge to get the whole story. The digital first chapter is yours to keep forever -- or at least until this whole computer/internet fad goes away --whether the campaign is successful or not.
The centerpiece of the campaign is the RED ANGEL DRAGNET Volume One collected edition, a digest-sized (approx. 6" x 9") volume containing a minimum of 88 story pages, along with bonus material. I'll be printing R.A.D. as a softcover along with a Kickstarter-exclusive hardcover edition.
I'm also printing copies of CORDUROY ROAD #1, available bundled with R.A.D. or on its own.
Digital editions of CORDUROY ROAD and R.A.D. will be available for international donors, for whom the shipping might be cost prohibitive. (I wish I had some way to get these to you more cheaply.)
In addition, I have a limited quantity available of my previous graphic novel ORPHANS, a collaboration with artist Branko Jovanovic, Some of these include a signed and numbered bookplate autographed by me and my sister, the actress ADRIANNE PALICKI (Friday Night Lights, GI Joe Retaliation), who provided an introduction to the ORPHANS collection.
Other rewards include opportunities to name supporting characters, original artwork, and more, with surprises to come, I'm sure.
Cool, but what does RED ANGEL DRAGNET even mean?
This is a true story: The Clash is my favorite band. Naming this book (and its component volumes, hence Lose This Skin) after one of their songs is a tip of the cap to what is probably my single greatest creative influence.
Also, RED ANGEL DRAGNET sounds cool, and it gives me a chance to use that conveniently awesome acronym.
Risks and challenges
When I ran the campaign for ORPHANS, I made nearly every possible mistake, but I'd like to think that I've learned my lessons. I waited until the art was complete before launching this campaign, but I've built extra time into the every step to account for possible delays and extra money into the campaign goal to account for unexpected expenses.
You can expect full transparency from me in the form of frequent updates, along with what I hope is an outstanding final product delivered on or ahead of schedule.
Every campaign donor receives a complimentary digital copy of RED ANGEL DRAGNET, chapter one. This self-contained first chapter will arrive as a DRM-free PDF. This reward will be emailed within 48 hours after your pledge is received, and is yours to keep, regardless of whether the project is funded.
