Con-Geda is going to fill a hole in the The 100 convention world, as it will be the first ever The 100 convention in the United States! It’s going to be unique in a lot of ways, since it will be entirely fan-funded and fan-run.
Conventions are such a special experience--you get to meet your favorite actors, you get to hear great behind-the-scenes stories, and you get to hang out with a whole bunch of nerds who are both very diverse, but also just like you in many ways! Whether you’re new to the whole convention scene, like Michaela, or are a veteran with many conventions under your belt, like Rory and Nicki, Con-Geda will be fun for the whole family.
We plan to have the usual convention events, such as panels, photo ops, and meet-and-greets, but also hope to do things like a cosplay contest, a fanfiction contest, and maybe even fan-run panels!
Con-Geda will absolutely not be possible without your support! Conventions are expensive projects, and it’s crucial that we hit our $15k goal here, otherwise we will not have the monetary foundation we need to proceed with Con-Geda. Every donation, no matter how small, and every share of our page on social media helps!
Of the $15k, approximately $5k will go toward securing a venue for Con-Geda to be held at, $8k will be used for deposits on our initial 5 hopeful guests, and the remaining $2k will pay for Kickstarter's fees.
We are currently in contact with several venue possibilities, as well as prospective guests and their management. As the month progresses, we will continue to work with them, paired with other fans full of valuable experience, to iron out more details.
Once the 30-day funding period for Con-Geda is over, assuming we’ve reached our goal, we’ll be able to fulfill deposit and contractual agreements with guests and the venue, and subsequently announce them! We’ll also begin negotiating photographer agreements for photo ops.
Then, we’ll be working hard to organize every last detail of Con-Geda--opening ticket sales, printing out programs, possibly booking more guests as funds accumulate from ticket sales, and finalizing the convention layout within the venue.
Once June of 2018 rolls around, we’ll all be running around like chickens with their heads cut off, physically setting up the convention, finalizing catering, and taking care of a million more tiny details that go into making a convention great!
And of course, we’ll be taking you all along for the ride--donors at any level will receive weekly email updates on the convention, and we’ll also be active on social media.
Why are we the people to create the first US-based convention for The 100? Well, it just comes down to passion. Passion for The 100, passion for spreading love and unity, and passion for conventions and fandom in general. The 100 fandom can be harsh, toxic, and contentious, there’s no denying that. But we’ve experienced first-hand the healing that can come through conventions, with fans from opposite sides of the fandom coming together and bonding over shared love for the show and the actors.
The show has its issues--none of us will deny that--but it also has so much positive representation for us. Rachel relates to Bellamy because of his role in raising his sister. Michaela finds representation in Raven, who like Michaela, became disabled as a teenager and struggles with accepting her pain and loss of independence. Rory loves Jasper, because she had a very (season 1) Jasper-like attitude when she was younger, even down to having a best friend like Monty, and was diagnosed with anxiety and depression at around the same age as Jasper. Jessie sees herself in Clarke because, while perhaps not to the extremes of the show, she feels the pressure of living up to impossible expectations and not losing yourself along the way.
In addition to being huge nerds, we also have valuable experience that will be advantageous for this convention! Nicki and Rory have been attending and volunteering at conventions for nearly 10 years, Rachel has helped to plan many events and conventions, and Sam works as a coordinator. Jessie has experience working at a theme park, so she knows how to work under pressure, and Michaela has experience with accommodations and making sure everyone feels welcome.
Con-Geda has the potential to be something truly special, but as we’ve mentioned before, it will not be possible without your help! We’ve been working with lots of creators within the fandom to provide exclusive backer rewards to you, from fanart prints to custom fanfiction to exclusive buttons! We can’t wait to work with you to create an incredible convention!
Risks and challenges
As with all smaller, fandom-focused conventions, the biggest risk we run is not having enough funds to pay for base expenses—venue space and guests. Unlike most other boutique conventions, however, our associated risk is lower because we won’t be relying on bank loans to get this project off the ground—that’s what the kickstarter is for! We have a strict budget to keep our costs under control and prioritize monetary allotment, and will not spend any funds or book more guests before we have the means to afford it.
If we do not reach our Kickstarter goal, any money you've donated will automatically be returned to you. Should we reach our Kickstarter goal, then have to cancel Con-Geda for whatever reason, we will refund any ticket sales we possibly can after paying the venue cancellation fee.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
