An innovative fashion watch that everyone, including the blind, can touch to tell time. Telling time shouldn't require vision.

The Bradley Timepiece

Wouldn’t it be great if you could check the time in a dark movie theater without having to illuminate your smartphone? What about not having to look down at your watch to check the time during a drawn-out client lunch?

The Bradley is a tactile timepiece that allows you to not only see what time it is, but to feel what time it is.

Created in collaboration with product designers, engineers, and people with vision loss, The Bradley changes the way we interact with our timepieces. You shouldn't need to "watch" your wristwatch to tell the time, and that is why we call The Bradley a timepiece instead of a watch.

Read about Eone on Boston Globe: Story of Eone.

How The Bradley works

(click the image for a video demo)

Instead of traditional watch hands, time is indicated by two ball bearings — one indicating minutes (top), and one indicating hours (side).

These two ball bearings are connected, with magnets, to a watch movement beneath the watch face. The magnets make it so that even if the ball bearings are moved when touched, they spring back to the correct time with a gentle shake of your wrist.

The body of The Bradley is titanium, making it sleek, easy to clean, and durable. Watch bands are available in a classic stainless steel mesh, or in fabric & leather in three different colors: mustard yellow, olive green, and silver blue.

The Bradley runs on a precise Swiss Quartz movement. Along with designing specialized tactile functionality for The Bradley, we carefully modelled it with a modern, minimalistic design, making it the perfect accessory for everyday use and formal wear.

Developing The Bradley

Over the past two years we have tested and prototyped version after version of the Bradley. Each iteration evolved fromgroup interviews and co-design sessions with people from many different backgrounds. Here are just a few snapshots of the Bradley as it evolved into its final form.

A new timepiece for everyone

The idea for The Bradley came after Hyungsoo, the founder of Eone, discovered that all mainstream wristwatches and clocks require sight, making most mainstream watches inconvenient, if not impossible, for the visually impaired to use.

The Current Market

There are currently use two types of watches available to blind people: talking watches and analog watches with covers that can be removed (so you can touch the hands). Both are problematic to use. Talking watches are often difficult to hear on city streets and in train stations, and analog watches break easily when the delicate hands are touched and are expensive to repair.

Fashion Meets Function

Meeting with visually impaired users during design and brainstorming we were surprised to find that blind users were as concerned with how The Bradley looked as they were with how it worked. In almost every meeting the first questions were about the material, size, color, and style of the prototypes.

Throughout design we have conferred with both sighted and visually impaired users to make sure The Bradley is easy to read with touch, but also maintains a classic and modern aesthetic.

We at eone believe in universal, inclusive design: designing for extremes of ability and disability to create superior products and services. The Bradley was in this way with equal consideration for both sighted and visually impaired users giving it unique function and versatility.

Inspired by Bradley Snyder

The Bradley is named after Lt. Brad Snyder

Early on during ideation, we were introduced to a young man named Brad Snyder. Brad lost his sight completely from an IED explosion while serving in Afghanistan as a bomb defuser. Resolved to continue his active lifestyle, Brad competed in and won two gold and one silver medals in swimming at the 2012 Paralympics in London.

People like Brad have inspired the development of The Bradley. Brad Snyder breaks stereotypes and misconceptions towards blind people by taking his blindness in stride and not letting it stop him from accomplishing extraordinary things.

In this same way, Eone looks for opportunities to co-design products, such as The Bradley, which are inclusive to all users. By not taking for granted any of the things we use and need for everyday life, we hope to diminish everyday obstacles for impaired and under-represented users by creating.

We are proud to have Brad Snyder as the namesake and spokesman of The Bradley.

The Eone Team

We are entrepreneurs and designers who believe in the power of inclusive design. We look for opportunities to co-design products, such as The Bradley, which can be used by a multitude of users regardless of age, gender, or ability.

For us, this means thinking outside of the box. We are not afraid to take risks to create superior products that function the way you need them to.

Partnership:

Support from United Cerebral Palsy For more than 60 years, United Cerebral Palsy has worked to ensure the inclusion of individuals with disabilities in every facet of society. UCP is excited about Eone Timepiece's efforts to create an innovative and fashionable watch for the blind. We are partnering with Eone Timepieces to help promote their crowdfunding campaign and bring more awareness to challenges that affect everyday life for the blind community.

UCP and its nearly 100 affiliates throughout the United States and several countries have a mission to advance the independence, productivity and full citizenship of people with a spectrum of disabilities by providing services and support to more than 176,000 children and adults every day. More than 65% of people served by UCP have disabilities other than cerebral palsy, including Down Syndrome, Autism Spectrum Disorder, physical disabilities and traumatic brain injury (TBI).

The Life Labs initiative at UCP is dedicated to identifying, developing, and supporting ideas that will make a difference for people living with disabilities. Through dynamic collaborations with individuals, businesses, and communities, Life Labs works to bring innovative ideas to life.

How the Kickstarter funds will be used

100 percent of the funds we raise on Kickstarter will be used for The Bradley’s first round of production. After more than a year of co-designing with innovative designers and user groups with different backgrounds, and another year of working with an experienced manufacturer, we have completed the prototype.

The Bradley is ready for production! We need your support to meet the minimum order quantity to bring this exciting project to life.

Production Timeline:

Mid July~ Mid August: additional design touch-ups, such as embedding eone logo on straps and packaging designs, and final quality test.

Mid August~ Mid November: we're going to place an order as soon as we receive the fund we raised from Kickstarter. The production lead time is 3 months.

Mid November ~ End of November: products will be shipped out in mid November, and it shouldn't take more than 7~10 business days for the shipped products to reach you even if you're hiding on the other side of the world.

Risks and challenges Learn about accountability on Kickstarter

Over 1 year of co-designing with innovative designers and user groups with different backgrounds and another 1 year of working with the experienced manufacturer, we have completed the prototype. We wanted to make sure that the prototype is complete with rigorous performance and durability tests before we start our Kickstarter campaign. We're very confident that we will deliver our products in superior quality by the projected dates.

MANUFACTURING
We have established relationships with experienced contract manufacturers to mitigate the risk of delays by material suppliers and to ensure quality control is implemented to the highest level. We have built test prototypes with our manufacturer and they fully understand our product, specifications and production timeline. While we know there will still be unexpected challenges along the way. We will always be transparent and inform our backers of potential hurdles along the way.

SHIP DATE
We have built in extra time for the manufacturing process and are confident we will ship by the projected dates. We will always keep you informed if things take longer than planned.

PRODUCT
We have taken the following steps to ensure that we deliver the best quality product:
- Built over many working prototypes with the established contract manufacturer.
- Extensively tested prototypes for performance and durability.

FAQ

  • A. Following the end of the project (mid-August), backers will be contacted to confirm color choices. You didn't miss anything! So, don't worry!

    Last updated:
  • A: Yes, you would need to add shipping on top of your selected reward. We would certainly appreciate it!

    Last updated:
  • A. Yes! We've done rigorous test and it is 50m water resistant. This means it's wearable around sinks, during swimming in the pool, athletic sports, in shallow waters, BUT NOT while snorkeling or scuba diving.

    Last updated:
  • A. We made the watch body out of titanium so the ball bearings stay secured inside the tracks. The ball bearings won't come out unless you try really hard to take them out with hard tools!

    Last updated:
  • We use standard Renata 371 Button Cell watch battery which is commonly used for Swatch, Fossil, Timex and Casio popular brands. It should last for years, and the battery can be changed at any regular watch or jewelry stores.

  • The decision was from user groups testing result. We realized that when people check time, we check the minute first because we usually have good sense of the hour. So, when people touch it (or see it), they know the minute immediately. Then, if you still want to check the hour, you check the hour ball bearing (by touching or seeing).

  • We do plan to sell wristbands separately on our website after the Kickstarter, but it may not happen during the Kickstarter campaign period. Meanwhile, most of straps with 20 mm width will fit our timepieces nicely, so you can buy your own straps from any watch retailers and replace the straps very easily! (But please make sure to try the new strap on The Bradley before you purchase it :)

  • We've received quite a bit of requests for smaller designs, but unfortunately, we won't be able to introduce smaller models until next year most likely. We want to make sure to deliver what we promise to deliver on Kickstarter before starting to work on the next design :)

    Last updated:
  • One of the reasons we made the watch face out of titanium is so that you can wash off any dirt with water and Q-tip very easily. It's 50 water resistant, and it won't get scratch marks from non-metal materials when you clean the track.

  • We do plan to offer a warranty, but it takes time to "define" the warranty coverage we're going to offer. It's not that we're unsure of our product's quality :)

Meanwhile, we can assure all our awesome Kickstarter backers that we will guarantee free returns (shipping cost is on us) within 45 days of purchase for a full refund. We will also offer the following service for one year after the purchase in case your Bradley breaks:

    - We will do a thorough inspection on the product once you send it back to us (shipping cost is on us).
    - If the Bradley you received turned out to be defective, we will either fix the Bradley at no additional cost or send you a new one. We will send you the inspection report as well to be transparent.

And as we mentioned elsewhere, we use standard quartz (watch movement), battery and straps. You should be able to fix it at any regular watch stores :)

But again- we'll let you know soon regarding our warranty. We appreciate your patience!
